Action are holding FREE computer training sessions for people to come along and learn how to navigate around our new website. All our members now have the facility to have their own page within our website so why not come along to this informal, friendly session and learn how to use the site to promote the work your group does. The sessions are held every Tuesday for the next 10 weeks at the Community Action Offices, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby. The sessions run from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. With the onset of winter and the colder weather swine flu has been back in the news. It is very important to be aware of the symptoms and what practical steps you, as an individual, and your organisation can take to minimise the impact. Please visit the NAVCA

Turn Textiles into Cash!

Ethical Reuse is a recently established Community Interest Company specialising in textiles recycling and offering a no-strings fee for the supply of unwanted textiles.
 
Ethical Reuse help set up collections and sort, grade and negotiate best prices to move the textiles on to those in need. They then pay you a fee that can be used for any purpose - a useful way to raise funds!  You will also be contributing to environmental improvement.
 
So why not hold a coffee morning or  party and ask people to bring unwanted clothing, blankets, etc.and turn your unwanted textiles into cash while also helping the environment and people in need.

Cultural Competence, Cohesion and Diversity Workshop 
One East Midlands

One East Midlands are holding a workshop to explore how difference and diversity are being managed in the public sphere. It will explore a range of issues that affect established and emerging immigrant communities towards more culturally competent practise. The workshop takes place on Wednesday 4 November from
9:30 am to 4:00 pm at Watershed Youth Centre, Leicester. Cost of the workshop is £35.
 
The workshop will include speakers, workshops, exhibitions and a buffet lunch.

Cash4Access Funds
Access Funds is an online resource offering grants information for the charitable and non-profit sector, and contains directories of funding programmes and guides to funding.
 
Subscribers to the Access Funds website can access information on the latest grant programmes and receive a monthly ebulletin with a round up of funding opportunities together with a tailored email alert service. 
 
To register for a FREE seven day trial click here to visit the website. London Action Trust, who run the Access Funds website are currently offering 13 months subscription for the price of 12, to take advantage of this offer please quote CVS2009. This offer runs until 31 January 2010. The cost of 12 month subscription is £50 for voluntary and community organisations. 
 
 
Thom KelloggThom's a Winner!
Congratulations to Thom Kellogg, Youth Volunteeer Advisor at Community Action, who is a regional finalist in the vinspired national awards 2009. Thom made it to the finals because of his passion and commitment to youth volunteering.
 
Nominated for his work with the Youth Action Team in Derby, Thom is a key member of the vinvolved Derby city team and has inspired many young people to get involved in youth volunteering projects in the city. He was nominated for his professional approach, down to earth good humour, inspiring leadership and his devotion to each and every one of the young volunteers.
 
As a regional award finalist Thom has been invited to attend the vinspired National Awards, a glitzy ceremony in London on 26 November at the O2 Arena. For more information about the vinspired awards please click here

Disability Employment Event
Derbyshire Employment & Skills Board, Welfare to Work Group are hosting a FREE half day event on Friday 20 November from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. The venue is the Derbyshire Hotel, Carter Lane East, South Normanton,  DE55 2EH.
 
This FREE half day event is aimed at disabled people, but is also for providers and employers.  There will be an opportunity to obtain information about the range of support services available within Derbyshire and an opportunity for employers to discover what help is available when they employ a disabled person.
 
The event will include guest speakers from a wide range of agencies, employers and employees who will share their experiences together with disability employment projects and the opportunity to network.

FREE Film Resource Pack 
FilmYouth Action Team volunteers, part of the vinvolved Derby city team, have been busy filming youth volunteering all over the city. Working with award winning film maker Owen Tooth, the team has put together a film resource pack to help youth workers and tutors encourage more young people to consider volunteering.
 
Sofia Iqbal is a volunteer with the Youth Action Team:  "We all had a lot of fun making the Youth Volunteering in Derby dvd. It's a great way to reach out to those people who don't know what volunteering is and let them know how to get involved."
 
The resource pack consists of a nine minute film, lesson plan and user guide. It is linked to the national curriculum, giving teachers and tutors a great opportunity to run structured volunteering workshops in and outside a classroom environment with young people.

DRCCCommunity Cohesion Event 
Rural Action Derbyshire and VOICE are hosting a FREE half day event entitled 'What is Community Cohesion?' on Friday 6 November from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at Willersley Castle Hotel in Cromford, DE4 5JH.
 
Come along to this event and find out what community cohesion is about; meet with rural groups in the area and find out what they are doing; celebrate the contribution made to community cohesion by rural voluntary and community groups; and help shape the Derbyshire Community Cohesion Strategy.

ChampionBecome a Champion!
Would you like to become an enterprise champion? Do you have up to 6 days available from January to October 2010 to attend training and support sessions? 

High Peak CVS together with Enterprise Solutions Northamptonshire and the Development Trusts Association East Midlands are running a project to find 15 enterprise champions from third sector infrastructure organisations in the East Midlands. The champions will pilot a a package of support tools and information with frontline organisations and take part in review and learning sessions to develop and improve the support package. There is an honorarium of £500 for each champion, plus 2 days free training.

StoryTell Your Story
Have you always wanted to have your story published? Would you like to improve your writing skills?
 
The BBC My Story project is a creative writing project to gather the nations true-life stories and help adults improve their literacy skills. As part of the project they are holding a Story Hub to inspire and help people to write a short true-life story to be published online. The Story Hub will take place on Friday 23 October from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Quad, Market Place, Cathedral Quarter in Derby. 
 
As part of the Story Hub local writer, Lydia Towsey, will be running a Writing Masterclass workshop focusing on drawing out ideas from life experience, helping you to find your writing style and helping you shape your story. The workshop will run from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and you don't need any experience to take part. 
 
People are welcome to drop in anytime between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm to find out about BBC My Story, pick up My Story resources and get help with submitting stories online. The project is open to anyone over 18 years of age.
 
               
 
Dementia Workshops
A series of five workshops entitled 'Dementia - Developing an integrated care pathway for people living with Dementia' will be held in Derby.
 
The DH East Midlands, NHS East Midlands and the Care Services Efficiency Delivery Programme will provide resources to support NHS Derby City and Derby City Council to develop an integrated care and support pathway, joint commissioning strategy and a delivery plan for the National Dementia Strategy. To facilitate this work they are organising a series of workshops to agree and develop an integrated care and support pathway. The workshops will build on what they have already done locally including Transforming Community Services (TCS).
 
The workshops will be held as follows:
 
21 October 2009
Workshop 1 -  Mapping current pathway, diagnostic and data.
11 November 2009
Workshop 2 - Validating and analysing current state.
2 December 2009
Workshop 3 - Drafting new pathway, identifying gaps and ideas.
27 January 2010
Workshop 4 -  Refining new pathway.
3 February 2010
Workshop 5 - Prioritisation and action planning. 
 
The venue for the workshops will be Jury's Inn, King Street, Derby DE1 3DB. The workshops will run from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm.

Volunteering Fair
VolunteerThe University of Derby are holding a volunteering fair at the Kedleston Road site on Wednesday 4 November from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
 
The fair is open to all and will feature over 35 exhibitors including Umbrella, Derbyshire Housing Aid and the England and Wales Cricket Board to name but a few.
