The Empowering the Voluntary Sector project has expanded and now brings together the expertise of Compact Advocacy, based at NCVO, NAVCA and the Public Law Project. The overall aim of the project is to strengthen the relationship between third sector organisations and public bodies and significantly increase opportunities to influence funding and other decisions made by public bodies.
The project will also continue to publish regular newsletters with updates, case studies, and hints and tips to both manage and prevent breaches of public law and non-compliance with the Compact. Total Place: Better Public Services for Less Public Money
This month NAVCA's Improving Local Partnerships policy update focused on an initiative called Total Place, which examines how local authorities can ensure local people's satisfaction with services, while simultaneously fulfilling central government's demand for efficiency savings.
The idea behind Total Place is to streamline processes and procedures and save money. Identifying where money is spent unnecessarily, for example the same data being collected by more than one department or agency, or the same road being dug up successively by different utililty providers, is key to the success of Total Place. Once the area of duplication and/or bureaucracy has been identified, agencies and departments will work together to ensure a more streamlined process in future thus saving money.
Total Place is to be piloted across themes that are especially relevant to third sector organisations: housing; regeneration; tackling alcohol and drug abuse; children's health and well being; mental health services; and tackling crime. Third sector organisations are significant stakeholders across all of these themes and many others. The services they deliver are often funded with public money through locally or nationally negotiated grants and contracts.
