Action are holding computer training sessions for people to come along and learn how to navigate around our new website. All our members now have the facility to have their own page within our website so why not come along to this informal, friendly session and learn how to use the site to promote the work your group does. The sessions are held every Tuesday for the next 11 weeks at the Community Action Offices, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby. The sessions run from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. NAVCA logoEmpowering the Voluntary Sector
Come along to this one day workshop on Tuesday 1 December at Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby, DE1 2GT.
 
Many organisations find it difficult to balance the need to work with public bodies and to challenge unfair practice.  Empowering the Voluntary Sector workshop delivered by NAVCA provides clear information and guidance to help you to make appropriate challenges.
 
The aim of the workshop is to equip third sector organisations to use the principles of public law and the Compact to negotiate effectively with public bodies. Issues covered on the day include how to deal with unfair funding cuts and consultation and how identify if a public body's decision-making processes are lawful.
 
The workshop runs from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and is open to all team members, staff and volunteers from 3rd Sector organisations who are funded by, or are seeking funding from, public bodies. The cost of the workshop is £35 per person including resource pack and lunch.

forum2Special Management Forum - Book Now!
We are delighted to confirm that the Charities Evaluation Service has agreed to deliver a special management forum for our members. This additional session will concentrate on Social Return on Investment (SROI) and how we can measure this.
 
This session is for people new to SROI who would like to learn more about it and may be considering it for their organisation. Participants attending this session need some knowledge of outcomes.

The forum will be held on Friday 23 October 2009, 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Community Action Derby, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby, DE1 2GT.
 
Places are limited to 35 people, so early booking is advised.  A booking fee of £15 per person is required to reserve a place. This will be refunded to you on attendance. If you are unable to attend and cancel by 9 October this fee will be returned to you. The booking fee will not be returned if you cancel after this date or do not attend on the day. 
 
This event is tailored particularly for organisations within the voluntary and community sector, but local authority and health colleagues are welcome.

laptopFREE Laptop and Subsidised Internet! 
Round two of BT's Community Connections scheme is now open. Community groups and projects offering community benefit can apply for a laptop and a contribution to the cost of internet connections fees for a year. The scheme is aimed at groups that have little or no IT equipment and can show how the award will be used to grow the organisation and benefit the community.
The deadline for postal applications is 5 January 2009.

Derby City Council logoSave the Date - Carers Conference
Derby is holding its annual Carers Conference on Tuesday 17 November 2009 from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm at the Assembly Rooms. The event is free for anyone in Derby who looks after a partner, relative or friend with a health problem or a disability, or who has a disabled child. Buffet lunch and refreshments will also be provided free of charge.
 
The aim is to provide some enjoyable time out for carers. There will be an information market place, round table discussions and workshops, all aimed at helping carers find the support they need to help them in their caring role.

New CommunitiesNew Communities Conferences
Are you struggiling to meet the needs of new communities? If the answer is YES then this is the event for you.
 
The conference is aimed at service managers and key workers who deliver front line services and would like to improve awareness of, and access to, new communities. 
 
The conference will provide information on the new and emerging communities in Derby; offer workshops on English as a second language and refugee and asylum seeking communities; and provide first hand experience of new, refugee and asylum seeking communities in Derby.

The idea of mobile working is simple, it means giving people the tools to work anywhere at any time. Mobile working allows you to stay in touch wherever you are in the world, so you can email a customer while ordering in your next shipment, without having to be sat at your desk.

This FREE two hour workshop, organised by Derbyshire Well Connected, will give you an insight into the mobile technology world and show you what is available in the current market.
 
There are two workshops being held on the same day at different locations: the morning session will be held at Sharpes Pottery, Swadlincote from 9:30 - 11:30 am; the afternoon session will be held at The Rutland Arms Hotel, Bakewell from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

AbilityNetICT Support Project
Are you a voluntary organisation supporting individuals with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or is ICT part of the service you offer within your local community?

AbilityNet is running a project that aims to help staff support and develop their skills within assistive technology, supporting individuals with a disability to access ICT within their centre. This includes learners with dyslexia, individuals who have difficulty using the keyboard, mouse or seeing text on the screen.

As part of the project your organisation will receive an accessibility kit; initial and ongoing training and support; access to AbilityNet's extensive loan bank of assistive technology; and advice about adaptive technology for your centre and individuals using your centre.

Wanted: Your Views
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service is setting its draft budget for 2010/11 and Service Plan for 2010/13.  They would like to know your views on how your think they should shape the final budget proposalsand set priorities for spending over the next three years. 

The draft document is available on the website and focus groups have been arranged across Derbyshire for you to have your say:
