Community Action Wins Contract for Over 200 Jobs!
Community Action has won the contract to support the creation of 212 new jobs in the city for 18 to 24 year olds who have been unemployed for nearly 12 months. The bid was made in partnership, led by Community Action, with Derby City Council, Derby City Partnership Jobs and Skills Group, which is the employment and skills board for Derby, Derbyshire LSC and Derby College. The jobs will be for 6 months with a view to becoming sustainable after that period ends, either through the current employer, in another department or with a new employer. The aim is that the young person will have increased their skills, confidence and general workability during this period. The jobs will be in the public and third sectors, with a strong committment to 'green jobs' and jobs in social enterprises, to boost the impact these sectors have in the city. The future jobs fund was designed by DWP as it recognises that young people are becoming furthest away from the labour market, and not choosing further or higher education or employment. Community Action's brokerage service will match up young people and employers and support them through the 6 months to iron out any issues to enable the employment to continue beyond the initial period. The jobs are for 25 hours per week at national minimum wage, the employer will receive a subsidy for engaging in the process to help towards any additional costs of taking on someone who may need extra supervision and guidance.
For further information please email Rachel Hayward, Business Development Director or telephone 01332 227714

Safeguarding Disabled Children
Children's Minister, Delyth Morgan, recently announced the publication of new guidance on the safeguarding of disabled children. The guidance, produced by The Children's Society will advise local organisations on how to best safeguard and promote the welfare of disabled children.
Research shows that disabled children are more vulnerable
to abuse than their peers. According to an American study
involving 40,000 children, those with disabilities were 3.4 times more likely to be abused or neglected than non-disabled children. Research in the UK has indicated similar levels of abuse to that found in the US. By setting out practical measures needed to identify abuse, such as how to communicate with disabled children about their experiences and needs, Local Safeguarding Children Boards and others working with disabled children will be better prepared to support victims of abuse and prevent further instances occurring.
