Caroline Flint MPMinister for Europe
visits CVS!
Caroline Flint MP, Minister for Europe, visited Derby CVS yesterday.

She met CVS staff, local charities, including JET and the Persian Cultural Association, and CVS volunteers.

Caroline was greatly impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone at Derby CVS, in your work supporting and bringing together local communities.

85 projects, including Derby CVS, took part in the 'Spirit of Normanton' programme supporting regeneration in the Normanton area of Derby, which received £7.6 million from the European Regional Development Fund between 2000 and 2008 via Derby City Partnership.

CVS premises at number 31 Charnwood Street, (refurbishment completed last year) were part funded by this programme.

The building houses CVS's Volunteer Centre, which has experienced a 30% increase in volunteers seeking opportunities in the last year.  This benefits the whole of Derby across a wide range of projects and addresses issues such as community cohesion and worklessness.

If you would like to find out more about volunteering yourself, or how to involve volunteers, pop in to the Volunteer Centre, or contact CVS on 01332 346266, or find out more on our website: www.cvsderby.co.uk

Futurebuilders logoFuturebuilders England urges applications ahead of official
start date
Voluntary organisations can begin applying for money from the Office of the Third Sector's £16.5m modernisation fund.

It is due to start accepting bids officially later this month. But Gill Nunn, market development director at Futurebuilders England, which with Capacitybuilders is delivering the fund on behalf of the OTS, urged organisations to get in touch at once.

Organisations that have incomes above £750,000 can apply for interest-free loans of between £30,000 and £500,000 from Futurebuilders, which is awarding £9.5m.

Non-departmental public body Capacitybuilders will issue the remaining £7m in grants worth either £1,000 or £10,000 in June and October to organisations with turnovers below £1m.
The fund has been limited to organisations working in three areas: wellbeing and health; advice, information and guidance; and loss of income, training and skills.
Small Grants for unused shopsSmall grants for creative use of vacant shops
Hazel Blears, the communities secretary, and Andy Burnham, the culture secretary, will announce a £3m plan to make thousands of small grants of up to £1,000 available to people who find creative reuse for vacant shops.

Planning rules will be relaxed to allow changes of use which go against local guidelines - for example, a disused clothes shop could become an art gallery or an empty Woolworths an NHS drop-in centre.

Temporary lease agreements will enable owners who want to retain a vacant property in the long term, make it available for community or creative use during the recession. Councils will be urged to take control of empty properties until the recession ends.

Ram FM have teamed up with v - the youth volunteering project - and between us we've got £50,000 to give away. The funds will go to local community organisations in Derbyshire that come up with new volunteering opportunities for young people.

v 's mission is to inspire a new generation of volunteers aged 16-25  in England and is committed to increasing the quantity, quality and diversity of volunteering opportunities for them to get involved in.

It also gives the volunteers a chance to gain practical experience, make friends and develop skills."
