The Energy Saving Trust is a Government organisation set up to give free impartial energy advice.

This year we want to get involved in my community events. This would include presentations, talks and information stands. We offer this service for free and we are more than keen to get involved with events in your area.

Esmee Fairburn logoEsmée Fairbairn Foundation
The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation aims to improve the quality of life throughout the UK. They do this by funding the charitable activities of organisations that have the ideas and ability to achieve change for the better. They take pride in supporting work that might otherwise be considered difficult to fund. Last year they committed approximately £25 million towards a wide range of work.

They welcome your suggestions about how they can help your organisation. They are particularly interested in hearing about how the work you are proposing:
Addresses a significant gap in provision;
Develops or strengthens good practice;
Challenges convention or takes a risk in order to address a difficult issue;
Tests out new ideas or practices;
Takes an enterprising approach to achieving your aims; or
Sets out to influence policy or change behaviour more widely.

If you ask for their assistance, you should tell them how much you need. The average Esmée Fairbairn grant is worth about £50,000, but they are happy to consider requests for less or more money.  More details are on the website.
HLF LogoYoung Roots Programme
Providing grants of between £3,000 and £25,000, the Young Roots Programme aims to involve 13 to 25 year-olds in finding out about their heritage, developing skills, building confidence and promoting community involvement.

Young Roots projects stem directly from young peoples' interests and ideas, harnessing their creativity and energy and helping them work with others in their local community.

Young Roots is a rolling programme and there are no deadlines for applications. To receive a Young Roots grant, your project must relate to the varied heritage of the UK and: provide new opportunities for a wider range of young people aged 13 to 25 to learn about their own and others' heritage; allow young people to lead and take part in creative and engaging activities; develop partnerships between youth organisations and heritage organisations; and create opportunities to celebrate young people's achievements in the project and share their learning with the wider community.

Your project must also create either: opportunities for young people to volunteer in heritage; or new opportunities for young people to gain skills in identifying, recording, interpreting or caring for heritage.
To apply for this grant, please follow the steps set out in the HLF's website
Cabinet Office 3rd Sector logoReal Help for Communities: Volunteers, Charities and Social Enterprises
 £42.5 million worth of government measures have been announced to support the third sector during the recession.

We will bring you summaries from this report for the next few weeks, as they could affect you and your organisation.

More information is available at the Cabinet Office for the Third Sector's website.

1. Meeting Demand for Services and Tackling Unemployment
The Government will target £15 million of the action plan's £42.5 million of measures at advice, employment, mental health, family breakdown, drug and/or alcohol use services and invest £16 million in local services in communities that are at greatest risk of deprivation. This will involve the following key actions:
- Up to £10 million investment in a volunteer brokerage scheme for unemployed people will create over 40,000 opportunities for people to learn new skills and give back to communities through volunteering;
- A new pilot accreditation process and independent ombudsman for the Department for Work and Pension's Code of Conduct will better protect the interests of smaller, specialist and third sector welfare to work providers; and
- A £15.5 million Community Resilience Fund will provide grant funding to small and medium providers in the local areas that are most at risk of deprivation.
- A national campaign to raise awareness of the Government's commitment to pay invoices within 10 days.
