Greetings!
This year has been an exciting one for Special Equestrians.  We have seen amazing progress in our riders, whether they are new riders or longtime riders.  Our instructors, volunteers, and families are extremely proud of the accomplishments of the riders.

Our teaching staff has changed in five wonderful ways.  Our new class instructors, who join our Head Instructor Dee Hollander, are:  Eileen Coe, Justin Parchem, and Amy Goss.  Our new volunteer instructors, who will also be helping out in the classes are Freda Jones and Cindy Hohman.  All have been certified as therapeutic riding instructors by PATH, Intl., Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship. We welcome them all, in their new roles at Special Equestrians.

We also thank, our Volunteer Coordinator, Sherry Gilbert, for her twelve years of service to Special Equestrians.  Sherry has done an amazing job for us at SE.  Any new volunteer who was trained by Sherry experienced a  welcoming and informative volunteer training day.  Sherry will be taking on new projects at SE, and she will still be involved in just about everything else at the program.  Our new volunteer coordinator, Priscilla Kovalsky, is introduced below.

Our horse herd has grown in the past year.  We added four new program horses:  Pete, Apache, Fancy and Smokey.   Three of these horses were donated to the program.  Thank you Sherry Fields and Catherine Brown for your generosity.

Our horse barn underwent Phase II of the renovation project,  to provide better air flow and an extra stall in the barn.  Our tractor and farm equipment are now housed in a beautiful new shed.  This project was completed with a grant from the Southwest Florida Community Foundation.

We have a new fence running the length of our ten acre  property, that is over 3,000 feet of fencing.  We have a new safe entrance to the property which will keep the trucks and trailers on the road and out of the ditch.  Thank you to Our Lady of Light Knights of Columbus for funding and helping us clear the fence line.  Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped with the planning and the building phase of these projects.

In 2011, our fundraisers were very successful and a lot of fun.  Without them, we could not operate our program.  We thank everyone who helped with the Taste of Love and Ride-A-Thon.  They are the two signature events organized and presented each year by Special Equestrians.

Thank  you  to United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades, for your continued support and for allowing us to be your valued partners since 2003.  You inspire us to be better every day!

Some organizations put on fundraisers for us this year.  Thank you to the Fort Myers Greeter's Club, The Cape Coral Ladies Lunch Bunch and Leoma Lovegrove.  We are very grateful to all of our donors, whether they are an individual, a club, an organization or a foundation.  You are the reason that we can keep our wonderful program thriving and improving.  You are the reason that we have the funds to take excellent care of our equine friends, who are the heart of our organization.  You are the reason that we can keep our tuition low and offer scholarships to those who are struggling in this economy.

Last but never least, thank you from the bottom of our hearts to our faithful and hardworking volunteers, who come during classes and outside of classes.  If the horses are the heart of our program, you are the soul.  You know we could not do any of this without you and we are in awe of your dedication.

New Special Equestrians Volunteer Coordinator

Priscilla with
SE Ambassador, Guinness

Priscilla's love of horses came from her caring for ponies while growing up in Massachusetts.   Her family moved to Reading, PA which is where she met her husband Ken while she was selling office equipment and he was opening up his Family Practice office.   After they married, she managed his office for 15 years.  They retired to Southwest Florida in 2000.

Her husband Ken loves photography and currently enjoys taking photos for Special Equestrians.

Priscilla also loves all kinds of music.  She plays the guitar and piano and sings in church.   She comes from a large musical family and her brother is a Grammy award winning guitarist.  She also rescues orphaned and injured wildlife and enjoys beading jewelry.

While attending the University of Pittsburgh, she wanted to pursue a career working with people with special needs.  She came to Special Equestrians to be with the horses and fell in love with the riders!

Like Sherry, Priscilla is warm and personable.  She was our first choice for this important position, when it had to be filled.  We are thrilled that she has accepted this important role at Special Equestrians.   We welcome Priscilla, as our new Volunteer Coordinator.

What Special Equestrians Means to Us
by Donna and Will Richards

First of all, Donna and I want to say thank you to Special Equestrians for honoring us as

the 2010 Volunteers of the Year.  Donna and I are privileged to be involved in both the office as well as riding aspects of the program.  We feel that each and every volunteer should be considered as a volunteer of the year for the many contributions each gives to such a worthy cause.  As we all know, without the contributions of all of the volunteers, the program and events provided by Special Equestrians would not be possible.

Our involvement with Special Equestrians began in 2007.  We were looking for a worthy cause that we could do volunteer work for, that would provide a beneficial and rewarding experience to both of us, as well as to the recipients of our volunteer efforts.  Our first encounter with the staff of Special Equestrians was with Jeanne Perry, who was working all by herself in an office area that was not much bigger than a closet.  Jeanne welcomed us with open arms and a grateful smile.  Jeanne was just the first of all of the staff and other volunteers who greeted us and took us under their wing to help us get acclimated to the

various aspects of being a volunteer at Special Equestrians.  We now have an "extended family" of volunteer friends that we look forward to being with every time we meet.

But mostly, we appreciate the fact that all of the time and effort that we contribute as a volunteer goes to enriching the lives of all of those who are involved with Special Equestrians. There is nothing more gratifying than being able to help provide the experience of riding a horse (or pony), and seeing the enjoyment and pleasure expressed by our clients.  Additionally, it has been exceedingly gratifying to be able to see and experience the various degrees of advancement and improvement that our clients exhibit.  There is no better feeling than knowing that you are giving some joy and feeling of accomplishment to another individual.  As an aside benefit to me (Will), I am able to get some much needed exercise while side walking, and doing other activities required of all of us volunteers.

Donna and I are both thankful and grateful to be associated with such a wonderful organization which provides benefits to so many deserving individuals.

We encourage you to forward this newsletter!   You can help Special Equestrians' newsletter reach more people and spread the word about our therapeutic riding program which is "Making Miracles Happen."
