Greetings!
We are sorry for the delay in getting the newsletter out.  Our staff and volunteers were working overtime putting the finishes touches on the facility in preparation for our Accreditation Visit from NARHA.  NARHA site visitors Karen Abbott, from Texas, and Jane Flora, from Orlando, spent most of July 25 checking out all aspects of our program.  We are thrilled to announce that we passed with flying colors!  Special Equestrians now begins our sixth year with the distinction of being a NARHA Premier Accredited Center.

As most of you know, Daisy and Nicky, former program horses, are no longer at SE.  They have a new home and they are together.  If anyone has been wondering how Nicky and Daisy are doing in their new life, please check out the Daisy and Nicky Blog site, listed in Quick Links.  They are having the times of their lives with Joy and John Augustine, and their new friends at the Spa.
Rider Achievement Day & Ribbon Cuttings!
On May 2nd, Special Equestrians hosted an open house at the facility to showcase the accomplished riders in our program, our beautiful new Viewing Area and our amazing new Sensory Trail.  All of our riders earned a well-deserved trophy during our Rider Achievement Day Horse Show.  Everyone did their best and it certainly shows in the pictures you will see in the photo show.
Anne Douglas, of the Southwest Florida Community Foundation did the honors for the ribbon cutting for the Viewing Area.   She also accepted a plaque in appreciation of the roof structure of the viewing area, which was built with grant funds from the Southwest Florida Community Foundation.   The Claiborne and Ned Fould's Foundation was responsible for funding for the concrete walkways in and around the viewing area.  Marcia Hobe accepted the plaque in appreciation of the Fould's Grant to build the concrete walkways.  The viewing area roof and walkways are vital to our safety and comfort.  They are appreciated so very much.

To top off the day, we continued the celebration with the ribbon cutting for the Sensory Integration Trail.  This project was a partnership between FGCU and Special Equestrians; and it was completed on April 18, 2009.  Maggie Giffin and Vanessa Durkin headed the committee to build our Sensory Trail and it was fitting that they would cut the ribbon for this new area at the SE facility.  To learn more about the Sensory Trail and the FGCU students, please read the article in the May edition of Hoofbeats Online.

Rider Achievement Day and Ribbon Cutting Photo Show

Our photographer for this day was Elizabeth Whitmer of E. Whitmer Photography, Fort Myers Beach, Florida.  Thanks Betsy, your photographs are simply amazing.
Susanna Tiainen - SE Volunteer From Finland
In the summer of 2009 I decided to do something different. I left Finland to visit Florida for three months because I wanted to know what it would be like to stay in the US for a whole summer. Instead of having just a typical tourist vacation, I wanted to experience normal life in Fort Myers and meet real, ordinary American people.

Although I had a place to stay, I needed something to do. Volunteering seemed to be the best solution. When my friend's aunt told me about Special Equestrians, I knew that I wanted to become one of their many volunteers. Working with their program seemed like a perfect job for me. I love working with children and animals and now I could work with both in the same place.

When I first got to the farm, people from the program welcomed me in the warmest possible way. I thought I would just fill out some papers, but instead I ended up having lunch with everyone. I started volunteering the next day.

Now July is turning to August and the horses are going to have their well-earned rest for a month. Soon it will be time for me to fly back to Finland. I will leave Fort Myers sad, but happy of all the new experiences I've had. I have learned very much about working with mentally and physically challenged people and about Western riding and horses in general. Special Equestrians have offered me much more than I expected.

I want to thank everyone from Special Equestrians for having me as a part of your team for the summer. Especially I want to thank Dee Hollander, who trusted me, a Finn whose vocabulary considering horses and riding wasn't too good when I started. I also want to thank Sherry Gilbert, who guided me and taught me very much about horses and Bob Lanham, who made it possible for me to volunteer every week. It has been a great joy to work with all the people from the program!

Special Equestrians - United Way Partner for the 6th year!
For the 6th year in a row, Special Equestrians has been given the honor of being a United Way partner.  Special Equestrians hosted a United Way Allocation Team site visit on May 6, 2009. The allocation team was given a full tour of the facility on Staley Road and they were treated to a special mode of transportation.  Thanks to Freda, Moe, Brandon and Chad Jones, we were able to give them a hay ride around the property, with our Kubota tractor pulling the beautifully appointed hay wagon.

This year's United Way campaign is already underway and Special Equestrians will do all we can to encourage our community to support the United Way in achieving their goal.  Last year, the United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades helped 70 local partner agencies with funding for over 160 programs.  Our community is indebted to our United Way as they give so much support to our local nonprofit organizations.  The United Way sees the good things that the local agencies are doing for the people they serve and they want to be able to keep these program thriving and growing.

When you see local businesses supporting the United Way, please thank them for what they do for our community.  We wish the United Way a great campaign this year.  They need our support to accomplish their great mission of changing lives for the better, in our wonderful community.

Additionally, if you know an individual who is in need of  human/social resources, the United Way 211 is a program that provides free information and referral services from agencies in Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties.  Help is just a phone call away and that phone number is 211.

We encourage you to forward this newsletter to anyone and everyone!   You can help Special Equestrians' newsletter reach more people and spread the word about our therapeutic riding program which is "Making Miracles Happen."

Forward this email to a Friend
Sincerely,
Jan Fifer
