Greetings!
We here at the Monkey College would like to thank everyone for their kind words and concern around Hurricane Irene. We are happy to report that we weathered the storm safely. Our thoughts go out to those less fortunate in the aftermath of Irene.
In other news: recognizing the devastating effects of sustaining a spinal cord injury, the United States Senate has declared that September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. This resolution honors individuals who have sustained a spinal cord injury and the family members who support them. It recognizes the dedication of local, regional, and national organizations, researchers, doctors and volunteers across the country who are working to improve the lives of individuals living with paralysis every day.
We hope you enjoy our e-newsletter. Keep an eye on your mailbox, our Fall 2011 Newsletter will be arriving shortly.
Sincerely,
Your friends at Helping Hands Monkey Helpers
PS. Don't forget - Last day for premier priced Festivale Tickets is TOMORROW. Don't wait - get them here today.

Meet a Monkey

Vicki
Vicki is a wonderful monkey who recently returned to the Monkey College from her placement when her recipient's health declined. All of the trainers and monkey students were thrilled to see Vicki again. She is a sweet, gentle little girl who loves nothing more than playing with her friends. She jumps extremely high in the air and lands on the back of an unsuspecting playmate-everyone ends up laughing hysterically!
When a monkey returns to the College from a placement, we start them right back in training to refresh any tasks that they may not have used in a particular home and to teach them how to work with any new equipment we may now be using. Vicki picked up her studies right where she left off, and we're certain she'll make a huge difference in another person's life soon!

Buttons
Have you ever noticed how often you need to push a button when using a remote, a phone, a computer or countless other things? One of our monkeys' favorite tasks to learn is how to appropriately use Power Buttons. Because they love to manipulate and explore objects, monkeys know how to perform this action from a very young age. Here at the Monkey College, we teach them the importance of waiting for a laser light to indicate which button to push, and to push that button only once. Our students love being rewarded for doing something that they enjoy. This skill allows recipients to use many different pieces of technology with the assistance of their monkey helper, and gives them the ability to enjoy everything from television and DVD entertainment to independent communication with phones.
