We've started blogging at Ready to Learn and we hope you'll join us.

You'll find a range of posts on our blog - news about us and our partners, articles of interest to the early-care field and families, activities and lessons that teachers and parents say "really work," and new perspectives on issues surrounding early childhood and education. You'll also see lots of pictures from events you, your children or a colleague might have attended.

Unlike a website, a blog is interactive. Help us turn this site into a true conversation by commenting on posts that interest you.

In less than a year, the number of our T.E.A.C.H. scholars at the Community College of Rhode Island has more than quadrupled.

T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood RI®, administered by Ready to Learn, offers scholarships to center- and home-based providers pursuing degrees in early childhood education. Eight scholars kicked the program off just over a year ago. This semester, 39 educators are taking classes at CCRI with T.E.A.C.H. scholarships.

Among those scholars is Jermell Johnson, a teacher at Roger Williams Day Care Center in Providence. We were thrilled to learn that next month Jermell will be inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society with a chapter at CCRI.

Right now, all of the T.E.A.C.H. scholars in Rhode Island are pursuing associate's degrees, but we soon expect to open the program up to those pursuing bachelor's degrees as well. We'll announce that here and elsewhere as soon as we have those details.

Grant from Blue Cross will help us strengthen the health of our youngest children

Blue Cross logoWe send a big thanks to Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island for a $25,000 grant that will help support the expanded health initiatives of our AmeriCorps team.

This year eight members of the team work exclusively in the field of health. They are assigned to pediatric clinics at hospitals, nursing programs in Head Start centers, WIC offices and the Meeting Street School. The grant from Blue Cross helps make this important work possible.

AmeriCorps member Elly Henderson is working with the nursing program at
Friendship Head Start in Providence.

Energy and enthusiasm -- even after a long day

First Steps

Each week, more than 175 educators - from centers, Head Start programs and home child-care settings - come to Ready to Learn for courses in early childhood education. They're studying infant and toddler development, supervision and leadership, and curriculum. One course, called First Steps, is for prospective home child-care providers who are seeking a license.

"I marvel at the energy and enthusiasm folks have, even at 8 p.m. after a long day of work, and with a new workday less than 12 hours away," says R2LP Director Leslie Gell.  "It's more than inspiring."
