 Library!

Bring the kids! Have a blast! Crawl around in the reading nook forest designed especially for Providence Public Library by the Children's Museum!

Just don't come yet. All you will find in the children's room of the Public Library at the moment is empty shelves. Thank you to the returning members of the R2LP AmeriCorps team who helped move the collection on Monday, December 12.

For a little over a month the Children's Room at PPL will be closed to the public for some major renovations. January 28th will mark the reopening of the children's room --  but it will no longer be simply a room full of children's books. New paint, new design, new activities, and a new name will accompany the re-imagining of the library's children's room.

During the interim period, all regular children's programs will be held on the fourth floor in the Barnard Room. The week of the reopening will be marked with several exciting events including a ribbon-cutting ceremony and special guest storytellers. New information about opening events will be posted at the Children's Discovery Library webpage, as it becomes available. We hope to see you there!

Happy News!

At the end of this month Yesica Bustamente, our R2LP AmeriCorps member based at Pawtucket Day, has extra reason to celebrate. Yesica's mother will be joining her just in time for the holiday season -- all the way from Colombia. It has been a long and arduous process, but finally Yesica will have both parents here with her in Rhode Island.

For years Yesica's father has been traveling back and forth from Colombia and Rhode Island, working in both places and trying to keep family life as stable as is possible when you're thousands of miles apart. Being a family will be much easier for the three of them starting in just a few weeks. Needless to say, Yesica is very excited about this change. Congratulations to the Bustamante family!

A Letter From Abby

Hey y'all!

That's my southern accent from down in North Carolina. This newsletter is such a great idea! I miss everyone a lot, and I'm excited that you have new avenues to pursue personal and professional growth. Just a quick update about what I'm doing with AmeriCorps VISTA: I'm working at Queens University of Charlotte as a North Carolina Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA. I'm the project volunteer coordinator for the Center for Active Citizenship, and I'm building a mentoring program with a local at-risk elementary school. Everything's hectic but my cat Callie keeps me sane at night. :) Keep up all your hard work! Even though I'm not in the Ocean State, I'm still one of the biggest fans of Ready to Learn Providence in the universe!

Lots of love,

Abby Burkland
