Hear it from your neighbors. Since 2008, a small group of concerned citizens forming as Envision Henrico have been meeting and asking elected officials and planning staff to improve the public process and the content of the Comprehensive Plan. The group's platform, guided by land use expert and attorney Stewart Schwartz, outlines a vision for balanced growth in Henrico: "The 2026 Comprehensive Land Use Plan should evidence commitment to principles that are important to ensure quality of life in Henrico County for years to come. These principles include smart growth, environmental protection, community character, transportation alternatives, diversified economic development, recreation and parks promotion, watershed access and protection, and regional cooperation." Greetings!
Citizens have a final opportunity to voice concerns about the Draft 2026 Henrico County Comprehensive Plan on Tuesday, June 9, at 7:00 p.m., Western Government Center, when the Board of Supervisors holds a public hearing on the proposed plan.
Do you want to know why your neighbors are concerned that the plan might be adopted?
- Update Capacity Analysis and Demand Estimate
- Plan for Transportation and Mobility Choices
- Conserve Open Space and Prime Agriculture
- Protect and Capitalize on Rivers and Wetlands
- Protect and Capitalize on Historic Resources
- Ensure Greater Citizen Role in Henrico Planning
According to the county's own survey, 82% of county residents "support further restricting or managing new development in rural areas." According to the county's own statistics, Henrico's already-approved subdivisions more than satisfy projected population growth through 2026 and beyond.
Yet the Land Use Map shows inordinate, leap-frogged growth targeted to eastern Henrico's open lands - growth that could be absorbed by more populated areas of the county with existing infrastructure. The Land Use Map does not reflect the text of the Plan. The Land Use Map does not reflect the loud and clear wishes of the people.
The Board of Supervisors needs to hear from you. If you don't wish to speak, your presence alone still sends a message that you care about balanced growth in your community and in the region. The turnout needs to show our leaders that we care.
Come on Tuesday. June 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the Western Government Center at Parham and Hungary Spring Roads.
Together we can speak up for the future of Henrico and our region.
