FARMS AND FOOD
  Local Food

The findings of the 2007 U.S. Census of Agriculture indicate Virginia lost 521,000 acres of farmland between 2002 and 2007, the largest decline in the past 20 years.   That leaves the Old Dominion with just 8.1 million acres of farmland.   See The Commonwealth Strives to Preserve Its Farmland.

A positive trend is that the number of very small farms - those generating $1,000 or less annually - actually increased.  Sales from those small farms, which typically sell product at farmers' markets or direct to the public, jumped from $1.7 million  to $2.5 million over the same period.    For insight into CSA's (Community Supported Agriculture) in Richmond, see Sharing their food: Full-time farmers do the hoeing and harvesting; share-buyers get quality, taste of homegrown food.

SAVE OUR ECONOMY: The answer is not more roads or rezonings
More cars
Under the Pavement

The only rational way to get us driving less are stronger gasoline user fees, but instead our nation spends tax dollars to make driving more attractive by building and improving highways.

Zoned Out

Are we going to build more just because the land is available - even if there are not enough schools, roads and sewer systems for these new homes and businesses?

Buy Fresh Buy Local Guide!
The Richmond region finally has our own guide, thanks to the  RAFS Council.  This new guide includes farmers & producers, and features listings of orchards, farms, restaurants, retailers, and specialty products.  Use it throughout the year to find local meat and produce, or grocers and restaurants that support local agriculture.  PSG is delighted to be listed as an educational organization.  More info.

TransitTalk.com

Without transit funding everyone WILL feel the impact.

TransitTalkTransitTalk.com was created to discuss issues, provide information and support, and encourage advocacy of all measures and policies deemed necessary for the creation of an adequate transit system throughout the Greater Richmond Region.  View the video.  Sign up to make a difference.

 VTrans 2035

This state and federally required long-range transportation plan establishes policy recommendations that provide direction for statewide transportation planning across all modes - road, rail, transit, air, water, bicycling, and walking. VTrans2035 will also address critical transportation issues and identify major strategic investments that are critical to the Commonwealth and our transportation infrastructure and programs.   The open house for the Richmond region was on June 24, but if you missed it you can still participate in the Virtual Public Open House.

Creative Commute of the Month:
High-Speed Rail
High-speed railHigh-speed Rail from D.C. to Richmond is closer than ever to becoming a reality, and no naysayers have emerged.  Seven localities in the Richmond region have adopted resolutions of support to leverage some of the $8 billion provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for high-speed rail - which generates $8 in private investment for each public dollar spent and reduces pollution, traffic congestion, stress, and the need for more costly roads.  See Rebirth of Intercity Passenger Service and A Tremendous Economic Opportunity.

Take action today to make it happen!
