Board of Supervisors Approves Roseland and Adopts Amendments to the Upper Swift Creek Reservoir Plan

Roseland, the largest development proposed in Chesterfield history, was approved 4-1 on 8/27.  This "city within a county" has spurred debates on regionalism and definitions of Smart Growth.  See Chesterfield OKs Roseland and New Urbanism can't hide need for regionalism.

Adoption of the amendments to the Upper Swift Creek Land Use Plan has also inspired dialogue. See We Will Control Growth - Responsibly and Chesterfield Should Respect Property-Owner's Rights.

PETERSBURG:

Leaders  in regionalism and river access

The Petersburg non-profit Friends of the Lower Appomattox River is working with localities to develop a 22-mile series of walking and water trails from Lake Chesdin to Hopewell.  PSG Steering Committee member Richard Taylor highlights : "We're showing folks of the area that a regional project can be accomplished."  See Projects improve access to river.
Regional Highlights
Capital Region Collaborative; Regional Transportation Authority

Richmond's report card by James Crupi opened many eyes: we have all the pieces, but we need to fit them together.  The answer is the Capital Region Collaborative, the group formed by the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission (RRPDC) and the Greater Richmond Chamber to enact the recommendations of the Crupi Report.  This is your opportunity to be part of this region-wide collaborative effort to strengthen our communities.  Sign up to ensure that you can help shape this region!   Correction: July's Enewsletter did not recognize the RRPDC in its role as a key member of this collaborative partnership.  Our apologies.

In other regional news, a proposal to establish a regional transportation authority for the city of Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico was endorsed by a committee of local government officials.  See Regional panel OKs transit plan: taxing authority to address transportation needs now goes to Richmond-area governing bodies.

Quote of the Month

"Things have changed since the 1950s and '60s urban-renewal movement that focused on clearing out areas.  Now, we're trying to bring communities back, not wipe them clean.... Incorporating the community in the design process is a big part of determining what's best for the community.  It's the community's community."  - Anthony Scott, executive director of the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority.  See Multistory housing agency: RRHA's reach extends beyond public housing and into new homes, community development.
The grassroots movement for smarter growth starts with you.  Thank you for staying connected and taking action.  See you at the River City Saunter - don't forget to buy your ticket today!

Sincerely,
