Wake Up,  Richmond
Across the nation, the price of gasoline is sending more and more Americans to public transit.  See The American Car Culture is Running out of Gas.  Meanwhile, our neighbors in Hampton Roads have made a celebrated leap to light rail. See  The Tide is Rising, fans of light rail say.   The GRTC's plans for Bus Rapid Transit along the Broad Street corridor are a step in the right direction.
James Howard Kunstler outlines the changes we need to make in the way we eat, buy, sell, occupy land, travel, and live:
Wake Up, America. We're Driving Toward Disaster.

Envision Henrico Forms for Better Public Process
Concerned citizens from Henrico have connected with one another to take an active role in the Vision 2026 Henrico Comprehensive Plan and ensure better public process in the creation of this powerful document.

The county's Community Open Houses, held in May at 5 locations, provided accessible information to residents.  However, citizens have yet to encounter the basic option of engaging in a public, transparent discourse on the Plan and what is at stake for Henrico.  Private conversations, public information sessions, and 1 survey do not constitute good public process.  For the Richmond Times-Dispatch's coverage, see Growth a concern in eastern Henrico.

Envision Henrico's next meeting is Thursday, July 17th, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., at the fellowship hall at Sandston Presbyterian Church, 13 North Confederate Avenue.  All committed to shaping Henrico's future are welcome.  Email Sheila for more information.

Green, Regional Thinking

The Capital Region Greenway Group has recently formed to assist the communities and local governments of the Richmond Metropolitan area in creating, developing, and maintaining a system of multi-use, non-motorized trails that will interconnect the people of our region to their homes, businesses, historic sites, churches, schools, parks, open spaces, and other places.  If you are interested in participating in this dynamic group of leaders across the region and state, please email City of Richmond Council Member Doug Conner at  doug.conner@richmondgov.com.

PSG Celebrates New Working Relationship with Back Porch Iniatives

PSG is happy to announce a working relationship with Back Porch Initiatives, a non-profit organization  committed to collaborating with the Richmond community by developing practical, economic, and environmental solutions.  Their approach to environmental concepts is to bring them out of politics, media, and academia and into our homes, congregations, grocery stores, and onto our back porches.  PSG and Back Porch will team up on Envision Richmond efforts, a Constituency Corps Training Program in October, and other exciting ventures.

Quote of the Month
"Virginia has to change the way it looks at land use.  It will have to encourage smart growth and more flexible zoning so that simple tasks such as grocery shopping do not require long trips in the car... Rather than subsidizing sprawl,  the state should require new development to pay for itself."

The grassroots movement for smarter growth starts with you.  Thank you for staying connected and taking action.
