Requirements for Carrying a Concealed Weapon in Wisconsin

Tricia

Tricia Nell

On July 8, 2011, Governor Walker signed 2011 Wisconsin Act 35, and Wisconsin became the 49th state to allow individuals to carry a concealed weapon. This action leaves Illinois as the only remaining state without some sort of concealed-carry legislation. While a few minor aspects of the bill took effect immediately, the majority of the law will take effect on November 1, 2011. Below are the practical facts about the law. Should you have specific questions regarding the applications of the law, feel free to contact our office at (920) 437-0476.

Do I Meet The Requirements For Concealed-Carry?

The Act created Wis. Stat. § 175.60 which states that the Wisconsin Department of Justice shall issue a license to carry a concealed weapon to any individual who is a Wisconsin resident, at least 21 years old, passed a background check, and provided proof of training. A licensed individual must carry a license document (permit) and photographic identification card when carrying a concealed weapon.

Small Claims Jurisdiction Increased

Michele McKinnon

Effective July 1, 2011, creditors may use small claims court to collect debts of up to $10,000.  Prior to July 1, the jurisdictional limit of the small claims court was only $5,000.  This means that more cases can be filed in small claims court rather than circuit court.  For plain-vanilla collection actions, small claims court offers many advantages over circuit court.

Social Media

A Blessing and a Curse for Your Business

Over the past several years, social media websites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have emerged as incredibly valuable marketing tools for businesses seeking to promote their goods and/or services to consumers online - for free.  For instance, many businesses have taken advantage of Facebook by establishing an "official page" on the website where consumers can go to learn more about the business, its products/services, and can even "friend" the business.  Obviously, this level of free exposure is tremendous.

Family Law

A Primer

will

Will McKinley

I receive phone calls asking me questions such as:  "My son's ex-wife is wanting child support. How can she get more when he tells me that they have equal custody?" or "If I get a divorce, will my wife get any of my farm?"  Unfortunately, divorce, and the subsequent squabbles that result afterwards, are a daily part of our society.  It is a safe bet that each person reading this right now knows at least one person who has gone through a divorce at some point.  What is interesting, though, is that for as common as divorces are in this country (and in Wisconsin), very few people understand the general "law" governing divorce, child custody/placement, child support, etc.  Consequently, I thought it might be beneficial for me to provide a primer outlining basic family law concepts.
