February  2012

Word from the GRITS Collaborative Project Manager
Hello! My name is Lauren LaBeff and I am excited to have joined the GRITS Collaborative Project. I am very excited to be a part of the GRITS Collaborative Project and look forward to seeing some of you in the future. February is going to be an exciting month. It is Women In Engineering Month and we are hosting a live panel discussion and video conference called Women Engineer the Future 2.0. Also, STEM has some exciting opportunities this year as well--some of which are detailed in this newsletter.

We are trying out a new format for our newsletter. So, let us know what you think! Email us at WISTEMmtsu@gmail.com
2012 NWHM Woman in Science Invited Lecture

Please join us on Wednesday February 29, 2012 as we welcome Alice Popejoy to MTSU as our speaker for the 2012 NWHM Woman in Science Invited Lecture.  Alice is the Public Policy Fellow for the Association for Women in Science (AWIS).  She writes and publishes the monthly AWIS in Action! Advocacy and Public Policy Newsletter.  Her talk is titled: AWIS in Action! Perspectives from Capitol Hill on Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). In this election year, it will be interesting to hear what Alice and Capitol Hill have to say about women in STEM!  The lecture will take place in the Cason Kennedy Nursing Building, N116, on the MTSU campus from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 29, 2012.  A reception will follow the lecture.  For additional information, please contact the MTSU WISTEM Center at 615-494-7763.  A special thank you goes to the MTSU NWHM Committee, the Nashville Section of the American Chemical Society, MTSU WISE, MTSU Housing and Residential Life, WGST 4205 students and to AWIS.

WISE Women Engineering the Future 2.0

Do you like to build things and to solve problems? Do you want to make this world a better place for everyone? If so, consider a career in engineering! A panel of women engineers will discuss why they chose to study engineering and how they prepared to be successful engineering majors in college. They will tell you what they do on a typical day in their workplace, how they balance work and home, and why engineering is a satisfying career for women. Join us on February 21, 2012 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am (CST) and learn how WISE women engineer the future. You can view the live enrichment program for students in grades 7 to 12 by going to the Center for Educational Media at MTSU and find viewing options on the website at cem.mtsu.edu view.
