February 2012

From the Director

Happy New Year! GRITS ended 2011 with a visit to the White House on December 9, 2011. Leadership team members from the Connecticut Girls Collaborative Project and GRITS with a number of NGCP National Champions Board members attended Champions of Change honoring special individuals who broaden the participation of girls and women in STEM. I participated in a group discussion on the importance of mentoring which brings us to January 2012, National Mentoring Month. Mentors play a significant role as girls explore STEM education and careers. Mentors encourage girls to investigate new areas in STEM, to stay engaged and to find a rewarding career. Did you know that our country ranks 27th in the world in the production of graduates in STEM and that the global economy progressively requires STEM professionals in the workforce? Be a mentor and guide Tennessee girls to a fulfilling career in the STEM workforce and a stronger economic future.  On behalf of the GRITS Collaborative Project, thank you for all that you do for Girls Raised In Tennessee Science!

TN-SCORE Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REUs)

TN-SCORE (Tennessee Solar Conversion using Outreach, Research, and Education) is excited to offer summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). TN-SCORE is an alternative energy research grant involving nine universities across Tennessee. Funding comes from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. There are three research areas within TN-SCORE:

  • Thrust 1 Advanced Solar Conversion and Innovation
  • Thrust 2 Components and Devices for Energy Storage and Conversion
  • Thrust 3 Nanostructures for Enhancing Energy Efficiency

During the summer, there are competitive opportunities for undergraduates to work in research groups. The summer research experience is an 8-10 week program. Students will receive a $4000 stipend, housing, and supplies. Depending on the host institution, the stipend may differ and food may be included. In 2012, the host universities include:  Tennessee Tech, University of Memphis, University of Tennessee, and Vanderbilt University. Funding is provided by NSF EPS-10004083. Detailed TN-SCORE Summer REU information is located at www.tnepscor.org and the application is available
