CALLING ALL FUTURE READERS AND THEIR PARENTS!
During the month of June, Thrive to Five and the Scottsdale Library will be offering two workshops aimed at helping parents prepare their young children for success in school. The workshops are each three-weeks long and are called Ready to Read and Books Can. Ready to Read workshops cover the six essential early literacy skills: Phonological Awareness, Vocabulary, Narrative Skills, Print Awareness, Letter Knowledge, Print Motivation. Books Can workshops cover children's social and emotional development through the use of popular picture books. Families will receive a FREE book each week to keep. Registration is required. All workshops will be held in the Kyrene Family Resource Center, 1330 E Dava Drive, Tempe, 85284. Thrive to Five is a program of Tempe Community Council. |
Inspiring and Motivating
We had a great turnout for the 24th Annual Mayor's Disability Awards on May 3.
Our guest speakers spoke candidly, and sometimes irreverently, of the challenges they have overcome. We were happy to honor some outstanding high school students from Tempe who are working hard to prepare for their future. Awards also went to some extraordinary individuals and organizations who are changing lives and this community.
Thank you to Mayor Hugh Hallman for presenting these special awards and to the Tempe Diablos for their generous support of our student employees.
Check out some photos from the event, taken by the talented Larry Mischler and learn more about the event on our website.

Continuing the Pledge - the Next Chapter
Formally known as Communities in Schools of Tempe & Kyrene, we announce a new name for the program: Commitment to Schools in Tempe & Kyrene, or "C2S".
The mission remains the same, "to promote community, school, and parent relationships to encourage young people to stay in school and prepare for life" and our staff, volunteers and Advisory Board remain dedicated to providing every student with every opportunity for success.

Thank you Agency Review Volunteers!
After months of hard work, deliberation and dedication, final funding recommendations were presented (and accepted!) to Mayor and Council last month. We are grateful for all 66 volunteers who donated 20 hours of their precious time to read proposals and finally make the recommendation to fund 44 programs within 30 nonprofit organizations. This process is what makes Tempe unique and TCC is proud to facilitate this citizen-driven process.
Read the letter to the community from Volunteer Agency Review Enhancement Chair, Nick Miner.
Together we make an impact. Together we care.
