2010 Don Carlos Humanitarians of the Year Dan Abbott and Catherine May
 
We are pleased to announce that Catherine May and Dan Abbott of Tempe have been selected as 2010 Don Carlos Humanitarians of the Year. Produced annually by the Tempe Community Council, the Don Carlos Humanitarian Award is considered one of Tempe's most prestigious distinctions and honors those individuals who give back selflessly to our community.
 
The 27th Annual Don Carlos Award Reception is presented by SRP and will take place on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the Arizona Historical Society Courtyard.

Catherine and Dan are known as a couple with remarkable instincts for putting caring into action. They have been engaged in a broad range of state and community causes and programs that work to change lives. The breadth of their outreach spans many human issues, ranging from hunger, homelessness and mental health counseling to abuse prevention, GLBT tolerance and humane treatment of undocumented workers.

Accompanying the Humanitarian of the Year Award is the third annual Guiding Light Philanthropy Award. Mr. Jerry Brock was selected as this year's Guiding Light for his tireless work to continue to improve the Tempe community. Jerry Brock's company, Brock Supply Co. celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. Brock Supply is one of the largest auto parts shipping businesses in the world. Jerry's philanthropy has been consistent through the years. He has supported many individual causes including the Cancer Foundation, East Valley Boys and Girls Club, Community Bridges and Tempe Community Council. He recently crossed the $1million mark in charitable gifts, primarily to Tempe causes.

Tempe Community Council will also be presenting Spirit of Tempe Karma awards to extraordinary volunteers and donors from local nonprofits.

The program will include a welcome from SRP President David Rousseau, a proclamation from Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman as well as celebrating these extraordinary community members.

Town Hall Tackles Underage Drinking 
Tempe's Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking and Drug Use is holding a Tempe Town Hall on Monday, October 4th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Tempe City Council Chambers on the topic of underage drinking in the Tempe community.  A particular emphasis will be placed on the challenges faced by middle and high school youth alcohol use. This Town Hall is directed to parents and adult residents of Tempe. The event will include a welcome from Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman and a panel of experts on the topic of underage drinking, moderated by weekend anchor and reporter from 12 News, Brahm Resnik.

Volunteers Needed for Teen Resource Center 
  
Communities in Schools of Tempe and Kyrene is seeking volunteers to assist in the Teen Resource Center on the Evans-Compadre campus (4525 S. College, north of Baseline). 
 
Volunteers are needed Tues & Thurs between 1-4pm to assist students OR anytime Mon-Fri from 8am-4pm to sort donations.

FREE Financial Education Workshops
 
Tempe's Financial Stability Intitiative (previously known as the Earned Income Tax Credit and Asset Development Initiative (EITC) is please to announce it wil be offering a series of financial literacy classess for residents of all ages.  
The City of Tempe, Tempe Community Council and Arizona Saves are offering three-part workshops that will include sessions on budgeting, taking charge of your credit and home buying. All classes are tailored specifically to each age group and a $50 savings bond is available to EVERY child that completes all three workshops. The first session runs November 9, 16 and 23 from 5:30-7:30pm, in the Escalante Community Center, 2150 E. Orange Street, Tempe. Dinner will be served. Sessions will continue in February and March/April 2011. There are three ways to register!

Ready to Learn  

New opportunities for parents with young children are being offered by Communities In Schools of Tempe and Kyrene thanks to a grant from First Things First. Families with children ages 0-5 can attend early literacy classes at Wood Elementary presented by Ready to Learn on Fridays 11/5/10; 11/12/10 and 11/19/10 from 8:30 - 10:00 am. The acclaimed 6-week series 1,2,3,4 Parents is offered at Wood on Tuesdays beginning 11/2 in English and on Mondays in Spanish at Holdeman Elementary.
