A Room in a Beautiful Home of Friends
It is one of the best kept secrets in the East Valley. Shared Living Village is a cluster of four attractive homes located in Northeast Tempe that allows people age 60 and older to remain independent, while having the comfort and security of knowing that they are living in a home of friends and don't have to "go it alone. " For the affordable price of no more than $625 a month, residents share a home with up to four other individuals, but each resident has his or her own private room with an adjoining patio. Groceries, local phone service, utilities and custodial cleaning are also included in the low monthly fee.
Clare moved in to one of these homes many years ago just after Christmas. Her sons did not want her living by herself so she moved to Arizona from Virginia and lived with one of her sons. However, both her son and his wife worked all day and the children were grown and Clare began feeling a void in her life. She missed people of her generation. She found out about the Village and came for a tour. Clare moved in shortly after and still calls it home to this day.
Wanting to be closer to his daughters and still be able to walk or bike to work everyday, Carl chose the Shared Living Village for its location and affordability. For Carl the Village is located between his two daughters, one in South Tempe and one in North Tempe. During the week you can find Carl riding his bike around the neighborhood, playing his flute for his fellow roommates or gardening in his yard. In the evening Carl rides or walks a few miles to work. The Shared Living Village continues to allow him the opportunity to remain active in his community and still be near his family.
Opened in 1991, a City of Tempe architect designed each home to make it easier for seniors to remain independent longer. Special features include low profile carpeting, wide doorways and hallways, lever door handles, and grab bars in all three bathrooms of each home. Each home is also equipped with a 24 hour monitored medical alert system and a smoke alarm in every room. The homes are fully furnished except for the bedrooms, which are decorated with the residents' own furniture and belongings to reflect their individual personalities and decorating styles.
The program is the result of a partnership between TCC, City of Tempe, and Maricopa County. The program is run by the Foundation for Senior Living.
Openings are immediately available. If you are age 60 or over, are able to perform routine daily functions, and are willing to share a household with others, Shared Living Village may be right for you or a loved one. Pass the word on. Earned Income Tax Credit Initiative (EITC)
On Saturday, February 13 volunteers and clients of Tempe's Earned Income Tax Credit and Asset Development Initiative enjoyed a visit from U.S. Congressman Harry Mitchell (pictured below. He met with volunteer tax preparers and hard working taxpayers who are hoping for a refund this year.

"In these tough economic times, more than ever, every penny counts," said Mitchell. "It is important that families are aware of every potential tax refund and I encourage folks to see if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit."
EITC is geared to assist individual taxpayers earning $35,000 or less, or couples earning $55,000 or less annually. The program is nationally recognized as a best practice site and is open every Saturday through April 10, 2010 (except March 13 and March 20) from 9 a.m. to noon at Tempe Schools Credit Union, 2800 S. Mill Ave. This site has Spanish translators and is ADA accessible.
Additionally, Tempe Community Council is happy partner with Valley of the Sun United Way to debut a second program that utilizes free online tax preparation software and allows clients to complete their own taxes. On March 4 from 9am-3pm at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center, 655 E. Southern Ave. Tempe, 85282, Tempe's Asset Educators will be available to help taxpayers use the online to for public benefits testing. This tool tests for eligibility for food stamps (now known as SNAP), health insurance through KidsCare/AHCCCS, and more... | |
