Responsible Organizations Are Committed to Public Trust

In response to the Arizona Republic's "Perfectly Legal" series, several of our nonprofit partners and funders, like Valley of the Sun United Way, published reactions to the accusations presented in the articles.

We ask you to remember that Tempe Community Council is here to serve as a resource for you and your community. Our volunteer driven Agency Review process provides a thorough and responsible evaluation of all our partner agencies. These agencies provide vital services to our most vulnerable neighbors and they need your support and confidence now more than ever.

Your investment in the Tempe Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Arizona Community Foundation, will support these worthwhile agencies and will make a significant difference in the lives of our neigbors and our community.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Tempe Community Council with any questions.
Sincerely,
Kate Hanley

Community Comes Together to Combat Underage Drug/Alcohol Use

Answering a call from Magellan Behavioral Health Services, TCC and the City of Tempe convened a committee consisting of a broad array of community members to tackle the issue of underage drinking and drug abuse.  After six months of gathering input from community members, convening focus groups, conducting interviews and a youth survey, a strategic plan has been developed. The plan includes environmental and individual strategies to combat teen drug and alcohol use:
  • Increase the availability of prevention counselors, especially at the high school level and in the community (Spanish-speaking in particular).
  • Create a continuum of prevention activities for youth in Tempe ages 5-18.
  • Expand Peer leadership activities to empower youth to make changes in community norms.
  • Expand Educational outreach to parents, including expanding No Parent Left Behind (NPLB) to middle school parents.
  • Develop media strategy which involves youth through teen video, T-shirt & logos contests.
  • Begin work on a state and local policy changes such as a keg registration ordinance to limit minors' access to alcohol.
  • Launch a community leadership campaign that incorporates the principles reflected in character education.

Once again, Tempe Community Council is leading the way and bringing the community together to improve and preserve the way of life for all Tempe residents.

Earned Income Tax Credit Intitiative

EITC logo
Tempe's EITC Initiative recently completed its  seventh year and saw a dramatic increase in demand for services, especially for free tax preparation.  887 tax returns were filed, totaling $1,381,733 in tax returns and $538,195 in EITC refunds!
Tempe's EITC Inititative not only provides free tax preparation to low and moderate income taxpayers; it provides a pathway out of poverty through saving, asset building opportunities and financial education. Research shows that greater income alone is not enough to empower working people with low wages to achieve independence.  Accumulating assets, like a home and an education,  leads to important psychological and social effects that are not achieved to the same degree by receiving and spending an equivalent amount of regular income.

Thanks to all the 75 volunteers, the City of Tempe, Newtown CDC, Tempe Schools Credit Union and IRS for lending a hand to help our hard working neighbors!    Learn more....

Steve & Kate
This year we had to bid farewell to a staple of the Tempe Community Council staff.
After decades of loyal service to Tempe, human services and the community, Steve Wise retired in January 2009 to enjoy and explore new aspects of life.
Steve served as the catalyst for so many of TCC's programs, projects and was instrumental in establishing us leaders in the human service field. He worked to launch several of our key programs, including Communities in Schools of Tempe & Kyrene,Open Horizons, EITC and served as the "guru" of data analysis, research and project development for our planning purposes.
He is sorely missed from the TCC family and we are working hard to fill the void he has left.
In honor of Steve's legacy, TCC is mindful and dedicated to giving a voice to those who have none and continuing to plan for the future of our great community. During these difficult economic times, I ask that you remember TCC in your outreach efforts, whether you are able to contribute your time or your treasure. Together we will make this a city we are all proud to call home.
