September 6: Every once in a while a referral comes to Angels that stops us in our tracks. Even though we are constantly surrounded by the effects of child abuse, neglect and a horribly broken system put in place to protect babies, these two have a story that broke our hearts. We are so happy and relieved we had the perfect home for them to go to. Right now they are headed to a brand new Angels family who has stepped up to provide the healing and love they need.

A letter from our Associate Director:

Dear Friends,

That exciting time of year is here again! Our annual Angels fundraiser is right around the corner, and this year's event is a strong reminder of how far we've come and how much we've grown. I call it Angels All Grown Up.

On October 12th we will host our first ever nighttime event, An Evening With Angels. Those who've been to our annual luncheons in the past know just how much information, emotion, and excitement we are able to pack into a mid-day hour or two. This expanded occasion will offer all of that, and so much more!

While keeping some things a surprise, I will tell you that we are offering our best auction items EVER, including an up-close and personal day at training camp with hometown hero, Philip Rivers, and a luxury vacation week at a spectacular Italian villa. Bellissimo!

Most notable is our fantastic keynote speaker, Antwone Fisher. The author of the best selling memoir and screenplay tracing his personal journey through the horribly broken foster care system will wow you with his powerful story, and define with eloquence and clarity why the Angels model is so critical for our youngest victims.

Just as our babies grow, so must our ability to support the expanding demand for exceptional families to care for more babies in need. Please join us if you can. We promise you an unforgettable evening.

In grateful anticipation,

Rachel

Diary of a Foster Mom: Joy in the Unexpected

I have never felt as fulfilled as I do right now. When I watch my husband and kids love Baby Girl my heart is full. The feelings of contentment that come with being her Momma, her family, her life, is right up there with having my own babies. We are not just housing her; we are raising her up to be the strongest little lady she can be.

Dear Dr. Mama,

I am the proud mom of a 2½-year-old son and a 5-month-old (soon to be adopted) foster baby. Recently, I read an article that was super concerning about pacifier use in baby boys. The gist was that baby boys (but not girls) who suck on a paci might have stunted emotional development because the piece of plastic in their mouths prevents them from mimicking the facial expressions of the adults around them. Say what??

This sounds crazy to me. In fact, by the time I finished reading I was animatedly talking back to the computer screen. Both my boys are paci lovers (we gradually weaned our oldest off when the baby joined us by explaining that he didn't need them any more because he's the big brother), and I feel like the additional sucking provides much needed comfort and soothing.

Our big guy is extremely expressive, and I certainly don't think his emotional development has been affected. What's your take on this research? Should I be worried? Consider taking the binky away from our little guy? I need a reality check.
