An Evening with Angels,
|
| This Month on Facebook | |
June 11: We received a call looking for a home for a little one who looks perfect on the outside, but x-rays reveal horrendous abuse. We had no Angels family available to welcome this broken baby. There's nothing to like about this situation, but when you click "Like" you are spreading the word...

A letter from our Assitant Director:
|
Dear Friends,
As we approach the dog days of summer with so much of the country sweltering under record breaking temperatures, I'm reminded how very lucky we are to live in this beautiful place. America's Finest City seems finer than ever lately.
Sadly, this isn't the case for everyone in our county. I often quote the statistic that each day four San Diego children are removed from their homes because they are in imminent danger of harm. Here's life's reality for one those children:
Misha is 6 months old. She was taken into care after 911 was called for her older brother, who was having a severe asthma attack. When paramedics arrived they found the home disheveled and filled with marijuana smoke. Misha was taken to the hospital for evaluation along with her brother, and was found to have methamphetamine in her system. How it got there is unclear. After spending several days in a children's shelter, Misha was welcomed into the open arms of one of our newest Angels families. A few weeks later her distant, glazed facial expression has blossomed into smiles and giggles. Her foster mommy has fallen in love with her and is making sure she gets all the hugs she needs -- and more.
Seeing the rapid changes in Misha and so many more Angels babies is a concrete reminder of the critical need we work every day to fill. We are so grateful to you, the supporters and friends who join in the fight to protect our babies. Misha and her big brother are depending on all of us.
Happy summer,
Rachel

Diary of a Foster Mom: From my Journal
|
6/15/12 10:44 PM I love you I love that I will meet every need you have, no matter how tired or annoyed I may be. I love that you light up when you see me and never sense my frustration or exhaustion. I love that you know I'd give anything for you, hence the reason you ask for so much. I love that even though you are not my child, I love you like you are. I love that you know what it feels like to be that loved. I love that you've given me the chance to be something great in this world when I didn't know I could have such importance. I love that no matter where I hide my favorite boots in the house, you find them, chew on them, then giggle when I tell you to stop. I love that you laugh when I sing to you (I get it). I love that I refuse to let you "cry it out" because I'm sure you did the entire first quarter of your life. I love how you trust me, even though you have a right to not trust anyone. I love how you enjoy shoving your finger in my eye as I lovingly feed you. I love how you happily gum all the homemade baby food I make for you. I love every hard-earned dimple in your cute, little butt. I love your stink-bug stance when you are on the floor and contemplating the feat of crawling. I love that you and you "brothers" have given me reason to breath such deep, strong breathes in this life. I love that, for now, you are my family. Love, Your foster-mommy

Ask Dr. Mama

Dr. Mama is better known as Rachel Zahn, MD, a pediatrician and mom of three grown kids. She is also the Angels Assistant Director. For more parenting advice check out her website MamasOnCall.com.
Dear Dr. Mama,
I'm wondering if my baby is allergic to his formula. We adopted him shortly after birth, so he's still pretty new to us and we don't know much about the family history. Can babies this young have food allergies already?
Gray seems to get an odd rash of bumps on his face after he eats. It is on his forehead in a little clump and some spots make their way behind his ear and on his neck and a few on his chest. Most are on his cheeks - there are hundreds! I have tried to pay attention to when it happens, and it is not after baby wipe use or lotion, but with feedings. The fact that it is more prominent on the left side of his face seems strange to me. He favors that side and feeds that way. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it as far as I can tell. At least no scratching or fussiness because of it. It just looks awful. I am convinced it isn't baby acne because there are times when it literally is redder than others and he has had acne and that clears up within a few days. This isn't going away. There is even a splotch that he gets near his eye and one on his eyebrow.
He is getting formula with baby cereal in the formula each time and gripe water AND Hylands all natural gas relief tablets.
Is this something you just deal with or do we have to be concerned that it starts as bumps but could progress to something more serious?
I appreciate any thoughts and opinions you may have. I looked at the ingredient list for the formula and it is kind of disgusting..............WHY does it include corn syrup solids???!
THANK YOU!

Remembering Luke
| The Angels family is deeply saddened by the passing of Luke Bagley, amazing dad, husband, son and friend. Throughout his brave fight he remained a strong and dedicated man, someone we were proud to have on Team Angels. He is a remarkable example of the selfless and committed parents who care for our babies. Our thoughts are with Lindsay and Timmy Luke in this time of loss; we know Luke will always be at the heart of their forever family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
