All too often Angels receives calls for babies who desperately
need our families and we are forced to say we have no home available. In 2011 alone we had to turn away over 100 babies; more than two babies each week.

Our Babies Need Families.

If you or someone you know might be a good fit, please come to our June orientation to learn more about the incredible gift of providing the life and future each baby deserves.

Thank you to all the San Diego families who have
transformed the lives of our babies.

A letter from our Executive Director:

Dear Friends,

The incidence of child abuse is growing daily and Angels continues to reach out into our community to make people aware of the unheard cries of the most vulnerable children of all - the babies.

There are several phrases in our vocabulary that I wish I never had to learn. A few of those are

  • Pos tox babies- babies born with drugs in their systems - substances ingested by their mothers during pregnancy.
  • Spica cast- a cast from chest to knees that immobilizes a child so the large upper leg bone can heal after blunt force trauma.
  • Shaken Baby Syndrome- occurs when a baby suffers brain damage as a result of a shaking injury, often leading to death.
  • Shunt- a soft plastic tube inserted to drain excess fluid from the brain when it is obstructed by scar tissue resulting from abuse.

These are common phrases that we see in the reports of babies referred to Angels for placement. Our babies, through no fault of their own, need families who embrace them and offer a safe place to heal.

We ask that all of our readers "pay it forward" by sharing this newsletter with someone you know. Through word of mouth we continue to recruit many wonderful families who give in such remarkable ways to save the lives of our precious babies.

                                                            Lovingly,

                                                            Cathy Richman

Diary of a Foster Mom: I Love This.

When I have written for the Angels blog in the past, my son and foster son have always been around me, usually my infant foster son was asleep on my chest while my son was playing close by. But as I write to you today my infant foster son is on the floor, scooting himself around, lifting himself on all fours as he eagerly tries to crawl. It's great to be able to sit and reflect on the evolution of good foster care. An extremely frail and malnourished baby one day, a healthy, normal, happy baby the next. I'm overwhelmed with reward as my fingers type away...such a wonderful feeling.

Dear Dr. Mama,

My 13-month-old has me ready to scream! She's an adorable, flirty little darling with the biggest brown eyes you ever saw and she's got me jumping through hoops to get her to eat.

Here's the picture: At mealtime I put her in her high chair and offer a wide variety of healthy, child-friendly foods prepared to exactly meet her toddler needs, like bits of cooked carrots, pasta pieces, soft peas, and on and on. BUT she refuses to pick any of it up and feed herself. She plays with it, smashes it into the tray, even paints her face with it - she just won't swallow more than a bite.

After a few minutes I get frustrated and grab the baby spoon to move things along. She seems perfectly content to sit back and let me feed her. Once in a while she grabs the spoon from me and plays with it or tries to feed me with it, but she won't use it to feed herself. Then I'm stuck placing food in her mouth while she happily entertains herself. It's driving me nuts and seems to be getting worse rather than better. How can I get her to feed herself??

Pleeeease help us over this hump. I picture myself spoon-feeding her for life!

Thanks so much.

Welcome Jessica and Kathleen!

Kathleen and Jessica We're thrilled to open the Angels home to our new social workers, Kathleen Thompson and Jessica Furland. They are already getting to know our north county families who they will support.
They have a lot in common! Not only do they both love hiking and hate olives, but  they also share a birthday. Their huge talent and warmth make out team bigger and better.
Please give them an enthusiastic welcome when you meet!
