Valentine 2012

This Valentine's Day give the most valuable gift imaginable;
the love and care every baby deserves.

 Give now at angelsfoster.org

Thank you to all the San Diego families who have
transformed the lives of our babies.

A letter from our Executive Director:

It's February - the month we go the extra mile to demonstrate our love for one another.  It's all about red stuffed animals, roses and big boxes of chocolates.

We know the real magic is the love our babies receive 24/7 from their Angels parents.  When a child is the victim of abuse and neglect it leaves an imprint on their little lives.  Our job at Angels is to minimize the scars from these tragic beginnings and offer them healing homes where they can recover and learn to trust.

Even as we read about children suffering around the world, we have infants right here in our community who are starving for nurture. Angels has rescued two babies in the past few weeks diagnosed with failure to thrive, and it is very sad and frightening to learn the details of why they were found in such condition.  It is truly amazing how fast these babies begin to gain weight and catch up developmentally when cared for by loving, committed parents.  We see the before and after pictures of these precious children and even after 12 years of rescuing these babies, I am in awe of the amazing transformation.

As we celebrate the 500 lives we have touched in the past 12 years, we are reminded that our work is not done, and that each month brings opportunities for Angels to save more babies in need.  We dream of the day when we will have families for all the babies referred to Angels.  In the meantime, we remain so grateful to you for your support of our cause.  Indeed it is the partnership between Angels and loving and committed individuals like yourself that allow our dreams to become reality!

                    Warmest regards,

Dairy of a Foster Mom: Healing with Love One Day at a Time

dairy of foster momI wasn't sure what to think when Angels approached me about writing the pioneer foster parent blog. As I raided all my thoughts: past and present-I felt overwhelmed with emotion: "What would I write?"

Do I want to rehash/share some of the most painful memories of my life? The happiest? Do I really want people to know the ups and downs of fostering and how truly difficult it is?"

Obviously, my answer was, "Yes, absolutely."  Continue Reading

Any Minute Now...

She has big brown eyes and hair as dark as night.
Her first tooth has peeked through, and she's grasping-
at a life she deserves and a future free of the
mental illness and drug abuse that plagues her parents.

This could be Angels Baby 500, and any minute now we expect a call like this to find a child an exceptional loving family. We are so proud of all the families who have rescued all 499 babies who have come before her. These little ones have gotten the very best chance for a healthy future and we know that Baby 500 will too. As we await this milestone, please join us in honoring all our Angels parents, siblings and babies served in the past 12 years.

Dear Dr. Mama,

I've got a tiger by the tail right here in my own home, and I don't know how to tame her. My 3 1/2 year old and I are constantly going head to head about the smallest things. It seems like everything I ask her to do is met with resistance.

Getting ready for preschool is a perfect example. She loves preschool -- adores it, in fact -- but when it comes time to brush her teeth and get dressed to go in the morning she throws a fit. We get into a prolonged battle where I give choices, hoping to get buy-in, she agrees but then dawdles, and eventually we get into a full-on struggle and I have to force her physically into her clothes.

By the time we're on our way to school I'm completely exhausted and she bops off happily to greet her teacher. The kicker is she doesn't pull this number when I'm at work and Dad gets her ready, it's just with me.

This routine is getting to be a habit and I want to break it before it goes on any longer. Help!

Room for Two

There has been a dramatic increase in calls looking for homes for very young sibling groups. Just last week Angels was forced to turn away a one year old and his newborn brother because we had no family available to care for them. Many of the 100 children turned away by Angels in 2011 were siblings. It is critical to keep these little ones together whenever possible to avoid shattering their entire world.  We know it takes a special family to open their hearts to two at a time-

Did You Know?

A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows a dramatic rise in newborns experiencing prolonged hospitalization for drug withdrawal following exposure in the womb. This is a common situation for our Angels infants and the families who care for them. These families are carefully trained to anticipate and manage the struggles faced by our little ones so healing can begin.
