A letter from our Assistant Director

Hello Friends,

Picture this: Seven spunky Angels between the ages of 3 and 6, plus one funny radio personality (Jeff from The Jeff and Jer Showgram) armed with provocative questions and a microphone. Mix well with some nervous parents, a couple of Angels staff and some healthy-ish kid snacks. What do you get?

Hysterical, gut-bursting laughter, that's what!

That was the scene last week when Jeff and our kiddos came together at my home to rehearse "Angels Say the Darndest Things!" for our annual luncheon on October 7th. It was an afternoon I won't soon forget.

As I watched the "show" I couldn't help but feel all warm and fuzzy seeing what wonderful, happy lives these children have now - so different from their rocky, tough beginnings. When the last little guy walked out the door loaded with snacks and love for the ride home I was so proud -- proud of our families who step up to this huge, gratifying task; proud of our kids who overcome tremendous odds to rewrite their life stories; proud of Angels and the work we do to help create happy, healthy families.

I hope you'll all join us on October 7th to witness the miracles we see every day. Five years ago I attended my very first Angels luncheon and I never left. The passion for changing children's lives that fills that room is undeniable.

Our kids will make you laugh so hard you cry, their stories will show you the important difference you can make, and you'll leave knowing that you gave an immeasurable gift to our babies.

With hope,

Rachel Zahn

Rachel webDr. Mama is better known as Rachel Zahn, MD, a pediatrician and mom of three grown kids. She is also the Angels Assistant Director. For more parenting advice check out her website MamasOnCall.com.

Dear Dr. Mama,

I recently heard that a little boy in my son's preschool class has an infection with MRSA. Another mom said it started out as a little pimple on his knee, but now it's spread and is pretty serious.

Is it true that antibiotics don't work anymore for this kind of infection? If so, how can they treat it? Should I worry that my guy may have been in contact with this little boy and might be exposed? Should I take him to be checked?

The teacher doesn't seem terribly concerned, and I went to the preschool director to ask about it and she hadn't even heard. I just don't know how crazy to get about this! I need a reality check.

Spotlight on Brandon

brandon 2

This smart, handsome five-year old loves Star Wars, drawing and animals of all kinds. He's not crazy about anything girly or pink, or new food he doesn't recognize - unless of course it looks like dessert.

These seem like the preferences of a perfectly typical kid, but Brandon had no ordinary beginning...

Critical Formula Shortage

enfamil
Our cupboard is bare! New families taking home a newborn need this necessity to cover the first demanding week. Our babies need Enfamil Infant yellow label and Enfamil Newborn baby blue label powdered formula as they transition into their homes. We appreciate your efforts, but cannot use liquid formula or other brands. Can you donate a can or case of powdered Enfamil? Email lhogg@angelsfoster.org for more information.

Adoption Congrats

nyella and mom levi

Congratulations to Katrina on her adoption of Nyella on August 12th, and Micheal and Janet on their adoption of Levi on August 19th.

We're so happy for these forever families!

Did You Know?

There are some terrible truths about babies and toddlers victimized in the US.

  • Each year 1,392 children between birth and three die from abuse and neglect.
  • Everyday, 210 babies are removed from their parents because of lack of care.
  • Children from birth to one-year old have the highest rate of victimization.
