6 Babies

Since Angels was founded in 1999 we have rescued 433 babies from abuse and neglect.

Since January 1, 2011 we've received more calls than ever about toddlers and siblings who desperately need care. Thank you to our families who are stepping up. If you are interested in our next training class, click here.

Hello Angels friends,

The Children's Defense Fund tells us a child is abused or neglected every 6 minutes.  Far too many never come to the attention of the authorities, but for those who do we as a community have a duty to offer these children committed foster families where they are safe, loved, and adored 24/7.

In years past, social service agencies discouraged foster parents from adopting the children in their care, and parents who asked about or chose to adopt were not always welcomed. Agencies discouraged adoption by foster parents for fear of losing good foster families when they were no longer available to take other foster children.  In the intervening decades, this practice has turned around as child welfare professionals increasingly recognize the benefits of foster parents adopting the children in their care if the children cannot be returned safely to their birth parents or relatives in a timely manner. The adoption field has come to acknowledge the benefits of this type of adoption for children, and shortened legal time-frames have made it easier for foster parents to approach their workers about adopting the children in their care. The foster family's role  can now include not only acting as a support and mentor to the birth family to help the birth parents successfully reunify with their child if possible, but also to love a child and be open to having a permanent role in the child's life.

We celebrate all the beautiful adoptions that have occurred in the past 10 years with our amazing Angels families and their babies, and we welcome more healthy families with time and love in their hearts to contact us about joining the Angels team!

Warmly,

Cathy Richman

Here is the March Dr. Mama question:

Dear Dr. Mama,

I've been wondering about this question for a long time now, ever since my first was a baby, and I've never gotten a complete answer:  What's the truth about teething?

When should it start? How long does it last? Is there a certain order that the teeth should come in? Can teething cause fever and colds? What about rashes in the diaper area or all over the body? What's the best remedy for teething pain? I've heard so many different stories I don't know what to believe anymore. Please give it to me straight.

Foster Parent Spotlight - Carl and Kathy

carl and kathyThe minute anyone meets Carl and Kathy there is no denying that kindness, love and laughter is their way.  Married for 20 years, they have had careers, lived on both coasts and are well traveled.  They enjoy time with family and friends and do not miss an opportunity to celebrate an accomplishment or be a shoulder to lean on for those close to them.  Sharing this life with a child was something that they wanted for many years.  However, there was another plan in the works, and they found Angels.

Adoption Moment

Macyn Adoption

Congratulations to Darcy Burns on the adoption of Macyn Christina, Feb. 16, 2011. Darcy continues to give back and has already opened her home to another Angels baby. What an exciting time for this family as they continue to grow!

Our Toddler Closet is Wearing Thin!

We need donations of new, adorable toddler aged clothing! As we continue to receive more calls for 2-4 year old tots our toddler closet is emptying. Please donate a new outfit or two for a boy or girl in need. Many of the pre-schoolers we place have never had a brand new outfit with matching socks, shoes and all the trimmings. These little ones are far more aware of their image than the infants we place. You can provide a cute new look and a new start these children can be proud of.

Please contact Lindsey Hogg, at 619-283-8100 ext. 227 or lhogg@angelsfoster.org if you'd like to donate clothing, gift certificates or organize a clothing drive.

Did you Know?

Did you know a healthy newborn baby will double his weight by six months and triple it by eighteen months? If we carried on at that rate, adults would weigh 500 pounds at 28 years old and at 55 we'd weigh over 1000 pounds!

It is amazing what goes into keeping a baby happy and healthy in the first crucial months of development- not to mention what a difference it makes once they start moving around and burning all those calories!

Thank You Old Navy
