Dear Friends:Cathy Richman

As I think back over the past 10 years, I am reminded of the one room little office where we first got started in 1999.  I had a borrowed desk, computer, clock, and a phone that never rang.  As I worked daily on writing the Program Description, I dreamt of the day when we would have our first Angels baby placed with our first Angels family.  That dream became a reality on Thanksgiving eve of 1999, when we placed 4 month old baby Jeremy.  Jeremy and the Cooper family would come to personify everything that our small Angels board and I could imagine as the "perfect" Angels family!

The Angels seed was planted 10 years ago, but it has grown into one amazing agency, rescuing babies and serving families in need because of all the nurturing, love and commitment made by the Angels staff, board, foster families and donors.

In these 10 years, we have witnessed the most unthinkable acts perpetrated against innocent children!  And yet, more profoundly, we have witnessed individuals who have offered up their hearts and homes as safe havens for babies to heal and to learn to love again.  The Angels family is indeed a unique family, all sharing in a calling to make this world a little better, one baby at a time.

Thank you Angels Family.
Warmly,

Cathy P. Richman

Ask Dr. Mommy

Dr. Rachel ZahnDr. Mommy is better known as Rachel Zahn, MD, a pediatrician and local mom of three kids, ages 20, 18, and 14. All three were born during her medical training, earning her the title. Rachel is also an Angels Board member. She attended our annual luncheon last year and says "I was so impressed with the organization, and so moved by the kids and their stories that I had to offer to help. The more I learn about Angels, the more passionate I become about our goals."  Angels wants to give you the opportunity to send in your questions and have them answered by Dr. Mommy.

Please read Dr. Mommy's question:

Dear Dr. Mommy,

I recently read an article about kids and sugar, and how it doesn't really cause hyper behavior even though most parents think it does. My son is 4, and when we host the playgroup at our house I notice something very different. I used to try and have warm chocolate chip cookies or brownies waiting (yes, I was competing for Mother of the Year) until I noticed that within 20 minutes of chowing down the group was bouncing off the walls. Now I make healthier stuff like peanut butter on toast or popcorn, and they definitely are calmer and better behaved since I made the change. My own 'in-house' research tells me that the experts have it wrong here. What do you think?

 Betty Moore
Betty Moore began fostering with Angels in November of 2007. Her first placement was an 18 month old boy who only spent a few days with Betty, but it was enough to "get her feet wet."

Her next placement was a newborn baby boy, Adam... click here to read more.
