Angels Friend,

Some days at Angels are easier than others. While we are grateful to all of our foster parents for taking in our babies in need, some placements are more difficult to accept than others. For example, we recently placed a baby that had been punched in the face! Can you imagine? Punching a baby in the face? It is truly unthinkable. Yet, these are the sad stories our babies face and must over come (of course, thanks to our foster parents, we know they still have a shot).

But, not every story has a happy ending. One of our little ones came to us after several years of bouncing around the system. Finally, she landed in a loving Angels home for temporary placement in a desperate attempt to bring stability to her life. This little girl had never had a father figure before, so when her Angels daddy would leave for work, she would be devastated. She wanted him to stay by her side at all times. She was clearly grasping for someone, anyone. Sadly she would call total strangers "Mommy". "Hi, Mommy!" she would say to our social workers, or even people on the street. To me, "mommy" is the most enduring word and precious sound from a little one's mouth. Yet, she freely gave that honor to anyone within ear-shout.

She has been enrolled in pre-school, but it's not working out. She doesn't respond like a normal preschoolers. She doesn't take direction, or play with children properly. Her actions are disrupting the homeostasis of a once happy family. In short, she has a very long, hard road of social acceptance ahead of her, and at no fault of her own. In her very short life, nothing has been normal for her and as her life progresses, it will be much of the same long, hard struggle. This is a reality for those that are not blessed with Angels foster parents. We should all pause to consider, what more can we do?

Staff at Angels will continue to search for ways to recruit more families and increase public awareness about the importance of putting the foster child first - just as we do our own.

Respectfully,

Monica A. Schrader

Ask Dr. Mommy

Dr. Mommy Photo
Dr. Mommy is better known as Rachel Zahn, MD, a pediatrician and local mom of three kids, ages 20, 18, and 14. All three were born during her medical training, earning her the title. Rachel is also one of our newest Angels Board members. She attended our annual luncheon last year and says "I was so impressed with the organization, and so moved by the kids and their stories that I had to offer to help. The more I learn about Angels, the more passionate I become about our goals."  Angels wants to give you the opportunity to send in your questions and have them answered by Dr. Mommy.

Please read Dr. Mommy's question:

Dear Dr. Mommy,

My question is about feeding our rambunctious, spirited almost-one-year-old. Our little Angel came to us when he was just 6 weeks old, taking infant formula without any problem and growing like a weed. When it came time to start solids he did well with strained vegetables, fruits, and just about anything else we offered him. As he grew, we moved on to finger foods and he loved those too. The problem started a month or so ago, when he started to refuse all but his few favorites. He'll still happily eat peas, bread with peanut butter, and chunks of banana but has begun to turn his nose up at most everything else! He's suddenly become such a picky eater, and seems to prefer grazing throughout the day, rather than eating the solid meals he did before. When I try to continue feeding him, he gets mad and tosses the spoon or sends food flying off the tray of the high chair. What am I doing wrong? Our little guy can't survive on peas and peanut butter!

Monthly Support Groups for Foster Parents

Foster Study PictureAngels now offers a monthly support group for all Angels parents to partake in. Parenting a baby, falling in love with them, and facing the challenges that come with this can often be very taxing and hard for foster parents. Sharing your feelings with a group of other Angels parents who have "been there", learning from them, and just being heard can be very helpful. Maybe you're not experiencing any current challenges, or you have adopted your baby - our group welcomes you as well! You may be able to share your past experiences and be a great support to someone who is facing a current challenge. We meet for 1-1/2 hours and post-certification training hours are given to those attending. Our next meeting is being held at the Polinsky Center in the middle of March. Call Annika at 619-283-8100 ext 221 for more details. Hope to see you there!

Thursday Club Juniors Supports Angels

Thursday Club LogoWe are pleased to announce that Thursday Club Juniors has chosen Angels Foster Family Network as the beneficiary of all proceeds from their 2009 Thursday Club Juniors annual benefit on April 24th, 2009 to be held at The Thursday Club in Point Loma at 5:30 p.m.

The Thursday Club of San Diego was founded in 1921 to promote social, educational, cultural, and civic activities. Members of The Thursday Club Juniors are very proud of the Club's heritage and have volunteered many hours to aid growth and development throughout San Diego County. In addition to giving time to the community, the Thursday Club has raised over a million dollars to support local charities. We are honored the Thursday Club Juniors membership has chosen us as this year's beneficiary of their annual signature fundraising event.

Thanks to the Thursday Club Juniors, Angels will provide a visitation room  for all Angels monthly orientations, new foster family training sessions (8 classes in a series offered four-five times/year), monthly support group meetings with foster parents, HALO training sessions and one-on-one HALO sessions with parent and child. A visitation room will provide a quiet, soothing atmosphere for both parent and child. This safe, structured environment, furnished with age-appropriate toys and soothing music will be a model for parents as to what a healthy environment looks like for a baby/child. In addition, the room will be used to conduct parenting classes to birth parents enrolled in our Angels HALO (Healthy Attached Little Ones) Program.  These one-on-one parenting sessions help to increase bonding and healthy attachments for birth families during the reunification process.

The proceeds of the 2009 Thursday Club gala will be used to provide a safe and supportive place for these families to reconnect and rebuild loving relationships. If you would like to support or attend this event please call us at 619-283-8100 ext 222 or click here today!
