Dear Angels Friend: We hope the New Year is treating you well. Here at Angels we are keenly aware of the state of the economy and how that naturally impacts crime and abuse rates therefore we are gearing up for another record year. Did you know?
- About 10,000 substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect are reported in San Diego each year?
- Child fatalities are the most tragic consequence of child abuse and neglect. Nearly 1,500 children age newborn to 18 years old die annual due to abuse or neglect, 80% of them are under age four.
- Research shows many parents who have been reported for child neglect lack the basic knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective parent.
With these staggering facts, we renew our commitment to finding more foster families to make long-term commitments to babies in need. In "High Risk Children Without a Conscience" written in 1987, but recently loaned to me by Cathy Richman, the message is still relevant today, if not more so. Consistency is the most important factor for a growing and changing relationship between a parent and child. "It is the consistent relationship, over time and space, that truly cements attachment." This is the consistency Angels seeks to establish from the on-set with our babies and foster families. It is the lasting bond that will give each child a true chance at a fulfilling life. While the stories are horrible of how we get our Angels babies, it is the beautiful families that foster these children whom recharge our energy and give hope to each child. We invite you to meet one of those families at our "Meet an Angel" Event to be held the last week of February, March and April. This event will be full of inspiration and information regarding the Angels mission and how you can become more involved in our cause. One of our foster families will be on hand to discuss their experience as an Angels foster family as well as joys and challenges. This will be a unique opportunity, you don't want to miss. If you are interested in attending, please call me 619.283.8100, Ext. 222 for event specifics. Space is limited. Monica A. Schrader Executive Director

Ask Dr. Mommy |

Dr. Mommy is better known as Rachel Zahn, MD, a pediatrician and local mom of three kids, ages 20, 18, and 14. All three were born during her medical training, earning her the title. Rachel is also one of our newest Angels Board members. She attended our annual luncheon last year and says "I was so impressed with the organization, and so moved by the kids and their stories that I had to offer to help. The more I learn about Angels, the more passionate I become about our goals." Angels wants to give you the opportunity to send in your questions and have them answered by Dr. Mommy.
Please read Dr. Mommy's question:
Dear Mommies and Daddies,
We're going to shake things up a bit this month! Rather than answering a specific question, I'm making an executive decision and devoting this month's column to a more universal topic ... how to make our family lives even more fun and satisfying. Now that January has passed and the pressure to make those New Year's resolutions is over, I'd like to offer a new challenge. Get everyone together at the kitchen table, including your littlest ones, and come up with a list of 10 'Family Do's' for this year. Don't call them resolutions, call them whatever you like, just think of 10 small, do-able changes you'd all like to make in the way your family operates. I'll give you a list of 10 of my favorites, but don't let those limit you. This is about your family, and should reflect what's important to you. So here goes...

| Adoption Story |
After adopting Gracie in 2007, the Davies family still had room in their hearts and continued to be foster parents with Angels. When they were asked to take Connor they just couldn't say no!
Little Connor was only 3 months old when he came into the Davies loving home. Connor's birth mother had an on-going struggle with mental health issues and despite loving Connor, she could not complete reunification services with the county.
The Davies were more than willing to continue offering their hearts and home to Connor by adopting him. We are excited to share that Connor's adoption was finalized January 08, 2009. Congratulations to the Davies family!

| Thursday Club Juniors Supports Angels |
We are pleased to announce that Thursday Club Juniors has chosen Angels Foster Family Network as the beneficiary of all proceeds from their 2009 Thursday Club Juniors annual benefit on April 24th, 2009 to be held at The Thursday Club in Point Loma at 5:30 p.m. The Thursday Club of San Diego was founded in 1921 to promote social, educational, cultural, and civic activities. Members of The Thursday Club Juniors are very proud of the Club's heritage and have volunteered many hours to aid growth and development throughout San Diego County. In addition to giving time to the community, the Thursday Club has raised over a million dollars to support local charities. We are honored the Thursday Club Juniors membership has chosen us as this year's beneficiary of their annual signature fundraising event. Thanks to the Thursday Club Juniors, Angels will provide a visitation room for all Angels monthly orientations, new foster family training sessions (8 classes in a series offered four-five times/year), monthly support group meetings with foster parents, HALO training sessions and one-on-one HALO sessions with parent and child. A visitation room will provide a quiet, soothing atmosphere for both parent and child. This safe, structured environment, furnished with age-appropriate toys and soothing music will be a model for parents as to what a healthy environment looks like for a baby/child. In addition, the room will be used to conduct parenting classes to birth parents enrolled in our Angels HALO (Healthy Attached Little Ones) Program. These one-on-one parenting sessions help to increase bonding and healthy attachments for birth families during the reunification process. The proceeds of the 2009 Thursday Club gala will be used to provide a safe and supportive place for these families to reconnect and rebuild loving relationships. If you would like to support or attend this event please call us at 619-283-8100 ext 222 today! |
