Baby With Paci

Dear Angels Friend,

Have you ever had this experience? You read the paper or watch the news on TV day in and day out, and some stories shock or surprise you, but you simply turn the page or change the channel when something else catches your attention.

Then something happens and you just can't turn away. That happened to me when I heard about 2-year-old Malachi and 4-year-old Angelina; both suffered brutal, violent deaths - in the foster homes where they had been placed to protect them from exactly this kind of harm.

I don't know what happened in those homes, that's for a judge and jury to decide. But when I heard the news I knew I had to speak out, so I wrote a letter to The San Diego Union-Tribune, which was published on May 3rd. I had to let people know that there is another way to care for foster children - the Angels Way.

I envision a day when the Angels way is standard in foster care, not the exception. I envision a day when foster care is a temporary solution, not a long-term sentence. I know you share that vision, and I thank you for your support of Angels, our families, our staff, and most of all, the babies in our care.

Read the article in the Union Tribune.

Warmly,

Cathy Richman

Dr. Mommy Photo
Dr. Mommy is better known as Rachel Zahn, MD, a pediatrician and local mom of three kids, ages 20, 18, and 14. All three were born during her medical training, earning her the title. Rachel is also one of our newest Angels Board members. She attended our annual luncheon last year and says "I was so impressed with the organization, and so moved by the kids and their stories that I had to offer to help. The more I learn about Angels, the more passionate I become about our goals."

Angels wants to give you the opportunity to send in your questions and have them answered by Dr. Mommy.

Please read Dr. Mommy's question:

Dear Dr. Mommy,

Our baby girl is now 10 months old and she has never slept through the night! She joined our family about 6 months ago, and at that time was waking up every couple of hours to eat, be changed, or sometimes just to play. Back then we thought she needed lots of extra attention, so we were OK with it, and my husband and I took turns getting up with her. Now, it seems that no matter how much we feed her before bed, or how tired out she is by the time she goes down for the night, she pops up like a Jack-in-the-Box every few hours. We've raised two older kids and I don't remember the sleep issue being so tough. Please help!

HALO Program - Healthy Attached Little Ones
RosieAngels is excited to announce our new HALO (Healthy Attached Little Ones) Program. HALO was designed by Angels to work collaboratively with the county of San Diego in their goal of succesful reunification. This program is paving the way for a smooth transition from foster care to the family home. Angels recently received a grant from the First 5 Commission in support this new program and we are excited to launch this program in July 2008.

HALO Program includes 10 weekly one-on-one parenting sessions led by an Angels therapist involving the parent and child. The sessions are offered at a juncture of the case where reunification is likely and take place in the home of the parent (when appropriate). The sessions focus on reconnection and attachment betweeen child and parent, while also covering various topics including attachment and bonding; appropriate discipline; infant and toddler development; emotional health and empathy; and grief and loss.

Santa Barbara Angels is Growing
Meichelle Arntz
In 2006, Angels Founder, Cathy Richman, was contacted by Meichelle Arntz who wanted to start her own Angels in Santa Barbara. Cathy was able to help her get started and now Santa Barbara Angels is thriving! Cathy just received an update on the Santa Barbara Angels success and wanted to share it with you.

"I appreciate so much you giving me the model and appropriate tools to have this opportunity to serve these babies. It is making a huge difference in our community. We just placed baby number 25 and are expecting more placements very soon. I am often left with my mouth hanging open as miracles occur right in front of me."
