Weekly Feature Wines

Every two weeks we have new feature wines that we have found to be excellent value. The following will be on feature and OPEN FOR TASTING for two weeks beginning September 10.

Mustilli 2005 Vigna Fontanella Greco di Sannio, Campania, Italy $20.00 ($5.00 ofMustilli f!)
This has become a Thanksgiving feature favourite! Four years of age has added layers of complexity to this Greco (grape), with incredible citrus peel spice, mature fruit, cedar and caramel. On the palate it is crisp and medium bodied, with tangerine rind and flower blossom giving way to mineral flavours on the finish. Mustilli is in Campania in southern Italy where from much great value, high class wine is emerging. Take a look at the old walls under which the wine caves of Mustilli rest in cool slumber.

Black Wing ChardonnayStep Rd. 2006 Black Wing Chardonnay, Padthaway, Australia $18.95 (down from $20.00)
The Padthaway zone is a high-quality cooler climate area in the southern part of greater South Australia. Fresh melon, pineapple and lemon curd flavours lift this wine's weight off your palate like a ballerina off the stage. Hot summer days and cool nights, with roast chicken or soft cheese make for a guzzle-worthy wine.

Campagnola 2006 Valpolicella Ripasso, Veneto, Italy $21.00

Ripasso is a sought after style for its smooth body, raisined fruit flavours and complexity. This one represents great value as the demand for this style has increased and driven up the prices!!

Wild Card Red Wine of the Week...
We've got some fun little surprises for you this week, ever changing as demand dictates, switching from an Argentinian Bonarda to some Italian merlot, maybe a little French fun, too! Come down and see what's on!

The second chapter of this blurb addresses possible causes for wine on the lamb:

1. It just sold out!! Guess what? If you like it, chances are others do too! It can happen that when you came in for that bottle you love, someone might have just walked out with the last one.

Remedy: Usually we will have it back within 10 days. We will always offer to take your name down and contact you when it's available again, unless...

2. Finite amounts produced means stock will eventually run dry. In any given year, only so much wine is made under one label. Once that wine is all sold out they move on to the ensuing vintage. Back-vintage wines are available but are much more rare and difficult to find.

Remedy: If you find one you really love, it can be worth your while to stock up a few extra.

3. The importer has a business to manage. When an importer brings a wine to market, they have to gauge their expected sales until the following shipment and order accordingly. If a wine they offer becomes much hotter than they expected, it can be awhile before the following shipment arrives.

Remedy: a little patience, and a further exploration of what else is out there.

4. Small/tiny production of special products. If the winery only made 200 cases of a special wine, and five of those came to Alberta, and a store only got one or two cases, then consider yourself lucky for having a real find! This is what is called an 'exclusive' or 'allocated' product, meaning based on importer/retailer relations and availability, only certain retailers will have access to certain products.

Remedy: Acknowledging your good fortune washed down with a glass of extra appreciation when enjoying that particular bottle.

5. Discontinued product/product line. Sadly, there can be several causes for this particular difficulty. Some great wines may stop being imported for reasons such as: winery/importer relations, the wine didn't quite 'take' to the market, winery ownership may have changed, importer ownership may have changed, economic/political policies, winery/importer may have gone belly up. This is a difficult problem to fix.

Remedy: 1. Time to let go. 2. Obtain an importing license and go after them yourself!!!

6. Rotation/experimentation of the Retailer. Vinestone is a small, specialty retailer of hand-selected wines. Though we have core products that are typically (almost) always available, we're also constantly sourcing out new products to fill different niches, and keeping the selection exciting and ever changing for you adventurous wine lovers.

Remedy: Keep expanding your horizons!

7. We drank it!!!

Incurable.
