Focus: You Gotta Have Art
PTCA Churches Offer Several Opportunities to see how art and faith come together.

Gifts of Aging
Shine by Kirsten Malcolm Berry.
"The artist is a servant who is willing to be a birth-giver. In a very real sense the artist (male or female) should be like Mary, who, when the angel told her that she was to bear the Messiah, was obedient to the command. Obedience is an unpopular word nowadays, but the artist must be obedient to the work, whether it be a symphony, a painting, or a story for a small child. I believe that each work of art, whether it is a work of great genius or something very small, comes to the artist and says 'Here I am. Enflesh me. Give birth to me.' And the artist either says 'My soul doth magnify the Lord' and willingly becomes the bearer of the work, or refuses; but the obedient response is not necessicarily a conscious one, and not everyone has the humble, courageous obedience of Mary. "

Madeline L'Engle

The Twin Cities area is blessed with an abundance of artists.  In what has usually been called "flyover county," you can find actors, dancers, painters, scupltors and composers.  Religion also has a major role in the Upper Midwest and it's not surprising to see where the arts and faith intersect.  In the month of October, there will be several chances to see the intersection of faith and art take place at events hosted by PTCA churches.

First off, is an art show and concert featuring the well-known artist He Qi.  First Presbyterian in Hudson will host "Out of Darkness and Into the Light" on Saturday, October 13. A variety of artists will display their work in the church narthex gallery show which will feature four pieces by He Qi, a celebrated Chinese Christian artist, who lives in nearby Stillwater, Minnesota. A concert which includes First's choir will follow the art show.  For more information, click here.

Edgcumbe Presbyterian in St. Paul is currently hosting an exhibit featuring the work of Kirsten Malcolm Berry.  On October 14, people will also get the meet the artist as well.  You can learn more about the show and Berry by going here.

Playwright and PTCA Teaching Elder Dean Seal is behind the play "Marrieta" which explores the role of forgiveness after a brutal crime.  Go here to find out the dates and times.

Finally, the Westminster Gallery at Westminster Presbyterian in Minneapolis, celebrates 10 years by hosting an exhibit called "God Loves Everyone." Galley curator Rodney Allen Schwartz describes the exhibit:

"Beginning with creation and the heavens and the earth, the theme unfolds through an awareness of the natural environment, and the identity of humans and our integration with the world and universe around us. In our diversity, we find inclusiveness. Coming together in community is represented by many artists each incorporating a variety of materials and techniques. The uniqueness of these artists' stories brings life to the construct of the diversity and inclusiveness of God's creation."
