  • We pray for Elder Ward Sessing (Ruling Elder, Presbyterian Church of the Way, Shoreview) who is dealing with serious health issues.
  • We continue to pray for those who are experiencing illness at this time including Dan Johnson (Teaching Elder, Honorably Retired) and Tim Held (Teaching Elder, Honorably Retired).

Focus: Aging Gracefully
Is getting old a gift from God?  How can our senior members benefit the wider church?

Gifts of Aging
The Beatles asked "Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm 64."

The Rolling Stones said "What a drag it is gettin' old."

Elvis Costello sings about an elderly woman's descent into senility in "Veronica."

Jimmy Durante and several others have crooned about being "Young At Heart."

Aging is a part of life, especially in churches.  Congregations tend to focus on young adults to help faith communities dominated by a sea of gray hair.  As important as it is to reach younger folks, pastors and lay leaders are tempted at times to see the elderly holding the church back or even blocking progress.

As our society ages, how can the church see its more senior members as gifts from God? And how can we help senior citizens see the gifts of being old and realize they are still in service for God's kingdom?

A Pre-Presbytery event will take place on November 13 to help address these issues.  Called "The Gifts of Aging" a panel of PTCA  seniors will share their experiences of aging as well as offer resources and ideas for congregations. Please consider attending this event, which starts at 2:15PM on Tuesday, November 13 at Church of the Apostles in Burnsville.

Speaking of resources on aging, here are few for people to consider:

The Presbyterian Older Adults Network bills itself as a "a network of persons who are engaged in ministry with older adults." Find out more by going to their website: www.poamn.org

The Association of Retired Ministers, Spouses and Survivors "seek to meet the needs of the Honorably Retired, their spouses, and their surviving spouses." Click here to find out how you can join.
