Focus: September 2012 Presbytery Meeting
The Business of the PTCA gets done despite the warm surroundings.

Teaching Elder Joann Lee (The House of Hope, St. Paul)listens to Ruling Elder Paul Harkess (Community, Rochester) at the September Presbytery Meeting.
By September, one would expect the 90 plus degree temps to be a thing of the past.  One would be very wrong.  Elder Commissioners gathered on Tuesday, September 11 to do the work of the Presbytery on the one day this week forecast with temps in the 90s.  Regardless of the weather inside, the presbyters got to work on a number of issues.

One of the first issues handled was a resolution put forth by the Bills and Overtures Committee, to oppose the Marriage Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution that would define marriage as between one man and one woman.  The amendment will be up for a vote on election day, November 6.  The amendment, which originated from the Session of St. Luke Presbyterian in Wayzata, called on the Presbytery to stand against the proposed amendment.  The resolution passed on a vote of 99 in favor, 39 opposed and 4 abstentions.  You can read the press release on the issue at the Presbytery website.

The body also welcomed several new pastors to the Presbytery, including Sarah Vanderpan, a Lutheran pastor who will serve at Buffalo Presbyterian; Robert Smith, a candidate for ordination who will serve at Spirit of Life in Apple Valley, and John Gay, a Presbyterian pastor who will serve at Presbyterian Church of the Master in Coon Rapids.

The gathered body also heard a report from the Commissioners to the 220th General Assembly in Pittsburgh and from Organizing Pastor Paul Moore who reported on the recent Property Purchase celebration for Chain of Lakes Presbyterian Church in Blaine.

A more detailed account of the Presbytery Meeting will come in next week's EMerge. Until then, you will want to read the accounts of two Presbyterians.  First off is a post by Paul Moore.  The second one is from Sarah Bigwood of Valley Community Presbyterian in Golden Valley, MN who has an idea on how to get more 20 and 30-somethings to come to Presbytery.  Read the article and share your thoughts.

There's An App For That.
The Presbyterian Mission Agency and the PTCA come up with new smartphone apps

smartphone With the rise of smartphones we are used to hearing about "apps" those applications that people download to their phone to do...well, everything.

Presbyterians are now getting into the act with apps that can help you in your spiritual walk and also make Presbytery meetings easier.

First off is the new Daily Prayer App from the PC(USA) Office of Theology and Worship.  The app includes a Psalm, Readings and a prayer.  The app will come out sometime this fall and will be available for iPhone and iPad.  At this point, there is Daily Prayer app for Android phones, but we will keep you post when and if one becomes available.

Also,  the Presbytery rolled out a new app to help people access Presbytery Packet easier.  We are using an app called "Guidebook" that allows you to design an event and find it through the app.  Guidebook contains a schedule, a listing of the Presbytery Packet and directions.  We had a positive reaction to the rollout and plan to use it at future Presbytery Meetings.  It's available for iPhone/iPad and Android devices.  Just check out the the appropriate app store.
