Focus: From Vacations to Vocations With Labor Day Around the Corner, we ask: Does God care what I do for a living?
Where did the summer go?
It seems like we just observed Memorial Day and here we are, getting ready for Labor Day and the coming fall season.
A few weeks ago, we talked about the importance of Sabbath in our lives. With Labor Day only a few days away, we need to ask how important it is to have a vocation or calling. When people think about being "called" we immediately think about persons being called into ordained ministry. But one can be called by God to work at a Fortune 500 company, or called to teach children in elementary school, or called to be a carpenter and build houses. The God we serve doesn't just call us to be pastors, but calls us into the world. The Presbyterian Church (USA) normally observes the Sunday before Labor Day (which is September 2 this year) as Christian Vocation Sunday. The Christian Vocation page on the PCUSA website has valuable resources and articles to help people discern where God is calling them in their lives. Presbyterian Blogger and past chair of the Presbyterian Mission Agency wrote a series of posts on how the church fails businesspeople. You can read the first of the series by clicking here. The roots of Labor Day is found in the American labor movement. Interfaith Worker Justice works with local churches to lift up the struggles of the working class with an event called Labor in the Pulpits this weekend. Sarah Bigwood, the Youth and Family Ministries Director at Valley Community Presbyterian in Golden Valley welcomes Trin Peterson as the new Youth Director at First Presbyterian in White Bear Lake. Sarah also writes about vocation in the context of church work and how persons other than pastors need to be recognized for their service in churches. When you go to church this weekend or decide to spend time on the beach, spend a few moments thinking about your calling and where God might be leading you. Have a good weekend!
