IS IT TIME TO HIRE AN ASSISTANT?
Your desk looks like a hurricane has hit it - papers piled to the sky with things you are planning to "get to" but never have found the time to complete. Are you working odd hours - late into the night or very early in the morning? Is there simply too much to do and all of it has you feeling a bit overwhelmed?

Top 5 Identifying Marks of a Business Owner Who Needs an Assistant
(inspired by A Better Way column in the San Jose Business Journal)

1.    You spend more than 80% of your time on administrative tasks.
To be truly successful, you must spend 80% of your time on high-impact activities. If the majority of your time is spent on administrative tasks you are not adding value to your business.
2.    You have a list of long-term, strategic projects that you never get around to doing.
Many people are busy putting our fires and fail to focus on the long-term projects, which will sustain their business in the long run.
3.    You feel that you can't go on vacation because there is no one around to handle things while you are gone.

4.    Be honest - You know you would produce more if you had someone to work with you.
You would likely be able to make better decisions because there would be someone there to provide insights and ideas. Or you may simply work better when you aren't alone.
5.    You want to spend time with your family and friends and there is simply too much work to do.

If any of these situations sound like you or your business, it may be time to consider hiring an assistant. It is unfortunate that when a business owner spends too much time on administrative tasks they fail to take the time to plan long-term strategic opportunities, which are key to the sustainability of a successful business. Most importantly, they are not accomplishing tasks that will ultimately grow their business.
