Greetings!

This is Craig Sutton with the March report and this one is a whopper!

The big bad Marlin and Sails bit strong through the early March backed up by a welcome swarm of Red Groupers.

The blue beauty Wanderer has scored big on all fronts: Marlin, Sailfish, Grouper and some super big Dorado. This boat will continue to strike terror in the area fish population.

Captain David and Mate Carlos on the secret weapon Explorer are still smiling from their world class action this month on big Striped Marlin and some bruiser Groupers. David and Carlos have teamed up to make the Explorer the top hook in the area.

Next week I will be heading to Costa along with FishingNosara's Master Technician Captain Jack Weinmann and Operations Director Matty Jorn to rig our newest sportfishing weapon: the 23ft. Adventurer:

23 foot Adventurer Cooler open23 foot Adventurer

Behold the Adventurer

Like the Explorer, this new vessel is a combination of proven Panga-style hull and modern, lightweight sportfishing tools. Upon completion the Adventurer will provide a cost-effective means to harvest inshore reef dwellers via trolling, top-water casting, deep jigging, and even on the fly. Don't even get me started on the Lobster tours we have planned...

It's not all work for us; once again we will be blaring 'Hells Bells' early in the morning of March 30 as we make another run at the Ship of Fools Tournament.

This is the premiere bragging rights tourney in Garza and we will be putting the Wanderer and Explorer in action to try and bring home the hardware for FishingNosara.

If you remember this time last year was some of the very best fishing with lots of Sails and Marlin, plus bunches of Yella Fellas.

We have some top notch anglers coming to town including FishingNosara Hall of Famer Kenny Strickler, Jacksonville legend John Barrineau, TV's Captain Don Dingman, and winners of the 1st Annual FishingNosara Family Cup the Ganoe family.

March and April are almost all booked up but all the old time subscribers to this report know that May is when things really turn on!

Captain William

First Mate Alex

The Wanderer has set the standard for fishing in Garza Bay, but this month's performance superseded the highest expectations.

Multiple Marlin releases were the flavor of the week in late-February and recent conditions has forced the crafty Captain William to reach deep into his bag of tricks.

As this report will show, Captain William and First Mate Alex have all kinds of tricks up their sleeves.

Neal Jerome and his group took to the Wanderer for a 2.5 hr. excursion on February 12 and they found a plethora of Red Groupers hovering on the reefs below.

This is just a sampling of the Groupers they put on ice:

They caught nine of these colorful Groupers in less than three hours. Excellent fishing by these California anglers on the magnificent Wanderer.

Our great friend Wayne Estes from Jacksonville has made multiple runs offshore with us over the years, but on February 14 he put on a Striped Marlin catching clinic.

His performance will live on forever in FishingNosara history as the most productive day of Marlin fishing we've ever had. Mr. Estes caught and released an unheard-of FOUR Striped Marlin on a 5 hour trip.

The good-looking blue water was far away by our standards (20 miles) but Captain William's gambit to go this far out paid dividends early and often. Wayne had warmed up the day before on this Pacific Sailfish:

But on Day 2 the Wanderer was ambushed by wave after wave of Striped Marlin. The first one hit around 8:30 am and Wayne Estes released one per hour for the next four hours.

That's right, FOUR Striped Marlin release on a five-hour trip. Folks, that is Hall of Fame-caliber fishing!

Most importantly, all five billfish were safely and quickly released. We look forward to catching them another day.

February 15 brought another amazing Striped Marlin release on the Wanderer! Mississippi's own Josh Luke and Emily booked a half-day on the mighty blue bomber and Captain William delivered the goods for these clients.

This honey of a fish put on a show as Josh brought her alongside for the release. Excellent teamwork by First Mate Alex and Josh to ensure the safe release of this majestic Marlin.

There was no let up from the boys on the flagship...Captain William and First Mate Alex bid farewell to Josh Luke after his incredible marlin release, then welcomed Colin Conces and his family for a Sunset cruise that same evening.

The family had great success on the Red Grouper that have swarmed into the area this month, boating a nice stack of filets for the dinner table.

Mr. Conces also added this delicious White Tuna to the sushi plate. Another relaxing yet fruitful Sunset family fishing trip from the comfy Wanderer.

Dennis Seltsam came to Nosara with a singular purpose: Catch the fish of a lifetime! This Kentucky angler booked the Wanderer for a full day of Marlin hunting on February 16 and I'd say the time spent traveling and trolling paid off.

Take a look at this beastie:

This Blue Marlin is estimate to weigh 250lbs. which isn't exactly a record breaker, but look at that girth! This barrel-shaped torpedo gave Mr. Seltsam a heck of a fight but once again Captain William and the Wanderer prevailed victorious.

Great safe release as always by First Mate Alex! Dennis nabbed another bucket list fish with Captain David later in the week; check the report below in the Explorer section.

After a much needed day off from Striped Marlin wrangling, the Wanderer was back on the water on February 18 and produced another unique catch.

Our new friend William Bronner and his daughter Jessica were in Nosara for a week of relaxing, traveling, and of course some big time fishing! Check out this MASSIVE Dorado estimated to weigh well over 60lbs:

Now that's a heck of fish, but the way they caught this Dorado really stands out as something unique. Notice anything weird about this picture?

Look closer:

This monster moved through the spread so quickly that he gulped down a second rigged ballyhoo before the hook was set from the first bait! With twice the leverage and two hooksets to work with, this bull came home with little effort.

William and Jessica Bronner followed up their incredibly large Dorado with another trip offshore with Captain William on February 19. This father-daughter fishing team notched the scorecard with two excellent Sailfish releases.

William Bronner was first up on the reel at 1pm when this MASSIVE Pacific Sailfish came tearing through the spread. Captain William kept the angler in an advantageous position while First Mate Alex coordinated the action from the cockpit. They kept the fight short and sweet, releasing this beauty in under 30 minutes.

An hour later Jessica Bronner flexed her fishing muscles on a Pacific Sailfish of her own.

Jessica hails from the hard-fishing town of Del Rey Beach, FL and she didn't need any explanation on how to bring in big-time billfish.

"Jessica is one of the best female anglers I've ever seen," commented First Mate Alex, who has been a professional boatman for over 14 years.

"She fought this fish like a pro and even assisted on the bill and release. Jessica Bronner can fish with me anytime!"

Client Thompson Rains come to Nosara as a result of winning the Ancient City Kingfish Tournament raffle last Spring.

On February 20 they joined Captain William on the Wanderer for an offshore billfish hunt and we are happy to report that they released two amazing Pacific Sailfish.

The first came around 12:30pm and hit the spread very aggressively. A quick fight followed and this beauty was set free after just 20 minutes.

The second sail blasted through he blue water around 2:30 and was released at 3pm. Fantastic day by some Florida anglers who know how to handle the blue water beasties.

"We had a blast! Captain William rocks and mate Alex is a one of a kind...he breathes billfish and is a real pro at handling the cockpit. We are very happy we booked this trip."

"Last Thursday we fished with Captain David and mate Carlos and were equally impressed with catches of Red Grouper and Congril. Enough to feed us all for the week and still gave away fish to the locals. If you are down this way give these guys a shout they are great and the area is a wonderful place to visit!"

Tom Rains, via Facebook February 21,2012

On February 22 Neil and his group spent 2.5 hours on the Wanderer starting at the crack of 7 am.

They ended up with more delicious filets on ice before noon then most people get in a week.

This Congrio was one of three that the Wanderer put on ice. They followed that with the largest Red Grouper of the season...take a look at this hog:

FishingNosara was pumped to welcome John Michael Burling and his fishing buddies down for a week of big time sportfishing. These guys define 'hardcore fisherman'...how's four trips in four days sound to you?

On February 23 they headed out on one of the other area boats and sadly did not catch anything. They had a decent boat ride, but on Day 2 they enlisted the flagship Wanderer and had much better results.

The posse went home with tasty filets of Congrio and a all-of-the-sudden common Red Grouper.

This influx of Red Grouper has been a welcome surprise this season. While they have been caught around here in the past they are usually quite rare.

On Day 3 of their Costa Rican Fishing Adventure, John Michael Burling and his group hooked up one of the nicest Black Marlin of the season.

This fish tore through the spread hot and heavy picking off baits until First Mate Alex dropped a fateful pitch bait to the beast. Captain William spun the boat around and kept this monster on a short leash...too much slack and this baby would have been a memory.

After a vigorous half-hour battle this Black Marlin was ready to be released to fight another day.

See you next time pal!

John Murdaugh and his group come from a small South Carolina town, but when these guys hit the water in Nosara they meant business big-time.

February 27 they were aboard the magnificent Wanderer with Captain William and First Mate Alex, and these anglers brought home a trio of fish that are all monsters in their own regard; taken together this is truly the trip of a lifetime.

This 50+lbs. Dorado was first out of the chute and John brought him in like an old pro. Next up was a mighty Pacific Sailfish who they caught and released very efficiently...less than 15 minutes from hook up to release.

The final fight was from a gorgeous Striped Marlin that came screaming through the baits like a banshee. The fight was a true test of angling mettle, but John Murdaugh and his team were apt to win the battle. Both billfish were safely released as always...nice work by First Mate Alex.

I can't wait to see the video from their pole camera but John tells me he is mastering his new editing software and should have a cinematic event for us soon.

A fantastic day of catching that will have the whole town of Hanahan, SC talking.

Neil Jerome was one of the first clients to fish these waters on the now-famous Wanderer back in November 2009, so Captain William and First Mate Alex were stoked to welcome him back for a quick 2.5 hour morning trip on February 28.

They put 'er in park right on top of the newly-discovered Red Grouper bite.

They nabbed a cooler full of the Red Groupers, plus added this tasty Congrio.

Once again the Wanderer proves that she is fit for battle with all the fish, inshore or offshore.

Jeff Grosshandler of Namaste Oasis has built a wonderful operation over the last three years and a staple part of his clients' experiences has been fishing on the famous Wanderer.

Joined by Doug Carras on March 1, Mr. Grosshandler enlisted Captain William and First Mate Alex for a half-day trip and brought home a nice Dorado for the dinner table.

Who says chicken can't fly?

Excellent catch by Doug Carras and our main man Jeff Grosshandler!

The Wanderer is the ideal place to get your kids bit with the fishing bug. Captain William and First Mate Alex are great with children and are excellent teachers of the craft of Costa Rican sportfishing.

Client Garrett and his family had an action packed 2.5 hour trip on the Wanderer and scored a nice White Tuna and a bunch of Blue Runners. Both young men got a chance to reel in some fish and a great time was enjoyed by all.

Hey, is that a signed Robert August hat? Cool lid kid!

March 6 was another great family fishing trip on the Wanderer! This time the big Red Groupers were around and Captain William kept the big blue beauty right on top of a nice pot of fish.

Jon Infanti brought a whole swarm of folks down to Nosara this week and on March 7 booked the Wanderer, Explorer, and Sportsman for a full-on fishing party.

The full moon brought some brackish green water in close to shore, but the Captains of FishingNosara know how to overcome obstacles and still deliver great times for their clients.

.

The Wanderer kept pace with three nice Red Groupers as well as multiple Jack Crevalles for the fish box.

All told these anglers put a hurtin' on the meat fish and should have enough filets to feed the largest dinner party. Excellent work by people who certainly know how to have a good time on the water.

Isabel Fernandez comes to Nosara from a lovely little South Florida fishing village that is just a few blocks from the IGFA Hall of Fame. Floridan anglers are certainly no stranger to productive days on the water, and the afternoon of March 8 was another day at the office for these Sunshine Staters.

First up was the tasty and elusive Congrio, known for it's excellent white meat. Then these Floridians really piled the fishbox with a swath of tasty Grouper.

Most importantly, everyone has a great time and has big smiles to show for it.

March 10 brought lots of Groupers on the Wanderer as Erica Porter and her group caught 4 Red Groupers each weighing over 15lbs. That afternoon Patrick and his group caught another pair of the tasty lunkers.

Most recently on March 12 client Hill Danforth came to the Wanderer looking to get on some early morning offshore action, and the mighty blue beauty delivered this amazing Sailfish at 9am.

We've got some great anglers lined up for the month of March with a few openings left in April. Hurry up and book if you want to lock-in the FishingNosara flagship Wanderer!

BONUS VIDEO - Check out Kristen Gramazio and Zach Condon's incredible 300lbs. Marlin Release from February 1, 2012. Great footage and editing by these clients!

Captain David and his 26-foot Explorer were the most productive mid-sized boat in the Garza this month.

The Super Panga packs the fishing tools of a boat twice her size, and with the experienced hand of Mate Carlos, there is no stopping the Explorer!

Captain David engineered another successful inshore adventure on the evening of February 7 with a fabulous Rooster Fish caught on a 3 hour Sunset fishing trip.

This specimen was released after the photo, and yet another angler got to cross this rare and elusive species off of his bucket list. Excellent hunting by the Explorer.

Captain David is known for delivering memorable Sunset fishing trips for his clients. Check out this multi-species evening on February 14:

Their 2.5 hour session yielded (from L to R) a Red Grouper, a Yellowfin Tuna, a White Tuna, and a nice Congrio. These guys made it back to shore just in time to get these filets to a restaurant...sounds like the perfect evening!

The next day Nosara Paradise Rentals GM Javier Hernandez took a quick 2.5 hr Sunset cruise with Captain David on the Explorer and El Jefe pulled in reef monsters that would cause the most refined palette to salivate.

These Red Groupers are far and away the most delicious of the Grouper family and the Congrio is legendary for its tasty white meat. From monster snook to inshore assaults Senior Javier has the talent to bring home the bacon!

Wayne Estes followed up their historic four Striped Marlin day with a very productive day of inshore reef harvesting on February 16. The Red Groupers were packing in thick and could not resist the topwater casted Williams Jet Popper.

'El Popper' could not be stopped as Wayne Estes put on a fish catching clinic.

Suzanne McDowell and her group had an excellent afternoon on the water with Captain David and they have the fridge full of fish filets to prove it. The unstoppable Explorer stayed inshore and they racked several large Congrios and an assortment of smaller snappers. Fantastic work by these Vermonters and Captain David on a great trip!

You gotta wake up pretty early in the morning to call yourself the pound-for-pound champ, so the Explorer had her lines out at the crack of the sun on February 18.

Captain David kept client Tom Rains on the fish and the rods were bent all morning.

This was Captain David's first of two trips for the day . In the afternoon Dennis Seltsam joined Captain David on the Explorer, and after a fantastic Marlin release on the Wanderer Mr. Seltsam was ready to stay inshore and hunt reef monsters.

The highlight of the excursion was this gorgeous Rooster fish:

These Kentucky anglers backed up the Rooster release with an assortment of Congrios which have certainly been around in droves this month. Great all around fishing perfomance by Dennis Seltsam and the invincible Explorer!

John Higgins and his fellow Vermonters returned to the shores of Garza for another adventure with Captain David of the Explorer on February 19.

The highlight of the feast was a pair of Groupers estimated to weigh 30lbs. The also had a big Marlin coming calling but the monster spit out the hook before it could be set. Still, plenty of filets in the cooler and lots of fun for this great group of Green Mountaineers.

Captain David and Mate Carlos of the magnificent Explorer took another huge stride to cementing this Super panga's reputation as the best pound-for-poung boat in Garza with client Greg Raab on February 21. The blue water break was a quick 5 mile ride off of the beach and Captain David put out the billfish spread.

This behemoth took hold around 2pm and screamed off about a hundred yards of line in a flash. Mate Carlos saw her a split-second before the strike, thus giving Captain David the advantage when it came to backtracking towards the torpedoing Marlin.

Upon release this fish was estimated to weigh a bit upwards of 300lbs. Most importantly she was released unharmed and unstressed, ready to do battle again.

Greg Raab also added a nice Red Grouper for the dinner table, but we know the fishing story he'll be telling the boys back on Long Island Sound. Great work besting a real sea monster and true fish of a lifetime!

John Michael Burling and the boys finished off their fishing odyssey with Captain David on the 27 foot Super Panga Explorer. After fishing for a few day on the bigger boats, one could imagine that the fishing on the barroom brawler would be a let down...turns out they saved the best for last

First up on the hook was another nice Red Grouper weighing in at a good 15 lbs.

With dinner taken care of, this group set out for the deeper water and tried to top their Blue Marlin release from the previous day. The first curious billfish that came knocking was this awesome Sailfish, which when released was estimated to weigh over 120lbs.

The final victory lap came for these guys in the form of this beefy Striped Marlin. Usually the Stripeys are the smallest of our Marlins, but this guy is a behemoth...it looks like it's got shoulders!

All in all it was a great week of fishing for the Burling group with lots of good fishing stories to take back home.

On February 29 our new friend Shepard McKenney booked Captain David for a morning half day trip on the Explorer and the Super Panga delivered the goods for this Maryland-based angler.

The Yellowfin Tuna swarmed the bait spread and throughout the day Mr. McKenney boated eight football-sized Yellowfin Tunas.

The big fish of the morning was an Amberjack estimated to weigh 45lbs. Shepard has enough filets to keep fed and makes some friends around Nosara.

Great work by a client who really knows a good boat (check out Shepard's normal ride over at Hinckley Yachts)

Shepard McKenney followed up this assault with another foray into reef battle with Captain David.

This time he pulled up more fish than before, albeit without a true 'highlight fish'.

In the end he caught 15 assorted Jacks a 15lbs. Yellowfin Tuna.  Throughout his two trips Mr. McKenney put 25 nice fish on ice in 10 total hours of fishing...do the math and see that the Explorer delivers the best bang-for-your-buck fishing.

Captain David welcomed client John Winter Preiss on March 3 for the first of four scheduled days of fishing on the powerful Explorer. He had full days planned later in the week and decided to ease into his adventure via a 2.5 hour Sunset cruise to get acclimated.

It didn't take John long to fill up the cooler though, because in this short amount of time he hooked up a 15 lbs. Red Grouper and a very yummy Congrio.

John Winter Preiss returned to the Explorer for a full day of fishing and proved that with 8 hours to work with (and such close proximity to the blue water) it is possible to nab billfish and bottom fish on the same day.

Captain David set up on the reefs at Pincha Padre around 11 am and gathered the required bait for offshore hunting; meanwhile John and his group plucked a meaty pair of Groupers off of the reef.

In an abnormal development, the Red Grouper has been more prevalent than the Broomtail Grouper recently. Nice to see a true Broomtail again!

As the 1pm Sailfish bite neared, Captain William and Mate Carlos took the unbreakable Explorer out the blue water and put the billfish spread on display.

A high-flying Sailfish came calling and charged one of the outrigger lures. The hook found its home and the fight was on with this acrobatic Sailfish.

Great bill and release by Mate Carlos to ensure the safety of boat, fish, and angler. Carlos is a local legend in Garza and his fishing prowess is unmatched; he has been a wonderful addition to the Explorer and has cemented her reputation as the best mid-sized boat in the bay.

Another fantastic trip for Captain David on the Explorer on March 8. These clients are just the latest to go home with tasty Red Grouper. Take a look at these monsters:

While passing time between trips, Mate Carlos chopped up some old ballyhoos and fed them to his pet Rooster fish. Carlos has been feeding this fella for years going back to his days as a mate on the Sportsman and has never set the hook into it.

It is a real treat to watch this majestic creature so close to the boat, so if you have a few minutes to spare before your next trip on the Explorer then make sure to ask to meet Carlos' pet Rooster Fish.

With Captain David aggressively seeking the next big fish and Mate Carlos providing a steady hand in the cockpit, the Explorer proves what can be done in this fertile fishery with the right combination of boat size, motor power, and tackle; this boat has no equal!

More News from FishingNosara

Captain Eduardo and his big battle wagon Sportsman played host to Mr. Neil Sawyer and his group for a great day on the water on February 18.

They caught 6 Red Groupers, two Rooster fish, and a pair of Congrios.

Offshore or inshore, the Sportsman stays on the fish!

Captain Eduardo welcomed a nice group of guys to the Nice n' Tight on March 23 to teach the Red Grouper a lesson or two.

This Red Grouper bite was on fire the all month so it shouldn't surprise anybody that the fish-catchin' Nice n' Tight and Captain Eduardo were on the scene.

***West Coast Program Note***

Fox Sports West will be airing two more episodes of Inside Sportfishing featuring the Craig Sutton and the Wanderer.

We are all super-proud of the boat and crew's performance on this legendary fishing show.

The next episode airs Saturday and Sunday mornings. Check local listings!

On February 21 Matty took a trip down to Ft. Lauderdale for the first leg of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit, a very prestigious four-event challenge that tempts some of the best Sailfish boats in the Southeastern US.

FishingNosara and Nosara Paradise Rentals have offered a first-class vacation package to the silent auction at each of the four tournaments. The initial meeting was held on sacred ground: The IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame.

Special thanks to Jaime Bunn of Blue Water Movements for making this whole event a fantastic success. We look forward to showing the winner a great time in Nosara.

Most recently Craig and Matty made the 34-hour round trip drive to from Florida to Suffern, NY on March 1 to take part in the World Fishing and Outdoor Exposition produced by the American Sportfishing Association.

This was our first foray into the Northeast and we are proud to report a rousing success. We met thousands of great folks who seemed excited about taking a trip to our little slice of paradise.

Huge thanks are due to Tod Alberto of the ASA for squeezing us into this wonderful event. We made some great friends and can't wait to do it again next year.
