Greetings!

This Craig Sutton with the FishingNosara December fishing  report.

Remember from the last report that the calendar was loaded with talented new anglers and returning Hall of Famers so we knew that a good month of fishing was coming.

No disappointment here...the Northern Pacific waters produced big time! Everyone went home with big smiles and great memories.

I got my fishing fix in late November with several trips on the Wanderer and Explorer. I am super stoked about catching one of our biggest Yellowfin Tunas ever on a topwater plug with the Wanderer crew (see above), and on the Explorer I released the first Marlin this season in the entire area.

The highlight of my trip was a Double Black Marlin day on the Wanderer with one released and the other monster escaped while we were about 6 inches from touching the Bimini twist.

For most of November our Captains had to make long runs to get to productive fishing grounds for billfish and Big Yellas, but the boats that made the long distance runs and found the good blue water were rewarded with plenty of solid action and happy anglers.

The first part of December was a little slow but the bite has intensified in the last few days and it seems the Marlin and Sails are back in town! It should only get better as we get closer to the New Year.

We have lots of dates already booked for this month and next so stand by for our next report, or keep an eye on the FishingNosara blog for daily fishing updates.

If you are ready to come down and fish don't hesitate; FishingNosara is world-class sportfishing at a reasonable price!

PS: For all you snook guys check out this 60+ pound Snook caught in the Nosara river.

This Snook is well over the world record for this species and angler Martin Ramirez said he caught a bigger one last year.

We have had some very satisfied clients fish the Nosara River from land, at wading depth and from our 13-foot Ocean Kayaks.

When it comes to any type of fishing, Nosara never ceases to amaze!

As she nears her first birthday, the Explorer continues the convert clients to the church of Extreme Panga Fishing. Captain David and mate Pipio have the 26-foot Super panga dialed in and they proved it this month by releasing the first Black Marlin of the season.

The Explorer got rolling with client Matthew McCabe and his wife fishing a half day with Captain David on November 21. They released one of the biggest sailfish of the season (at least 130lbs.); the picture weighs 5 pounds!

They finished the day off with a 35lbs. Mahi-Mahi and a nice White Tuna. Great day of fishing for the McCabes!

On November 23 Craig Sutton notched the scorecard with the season's first Marlin release, a 300lbs. Black beauty. This ends a 15 month marlin dry spell for the Jacksonville, FL-based angler and also represents the largest fish caught to date on the 26-foot Explorer. It is also the first Marlin released by any boat this season in the area.

The water was deep green and Craig was up on the forward platform when he spotted four jumping dolphin dead ahead. "It was like it was telekinetic," Craig later recalled. "I could feel that there was something big down there."

That same moment the 300lbs. Black Marlin swooped in and annihilated the port side teaser. Alertly mate Pipio let spool the outrigger line, creating an irresistible target for the monster.

Once hooked an efficient 20 minute fight was all Mr. Sutton needed to bring her along side for a nice safe release. Great work by Captain David and Mate Pipio on the unstoppable Super Panga.

Client Matt Lutz from Idaho got his turkey day off to a fun start on November 24 with a nice 3 hr. trip on the Explorer with Captain David. I don't think there is lots of deep sea fishing to do back home, but this Gem Stater had great success on the inshore reef boating three White tunas, a beefy Jack Crevalle, and a quintet of bad black Bonitas.

The next morning was family fishing time for client Paul Tyler on the Explorer. They caught a pair of Bonitas on the devastating planer/spoon rig then anchored up to the reef to find some good eatin'.

The Jacksonville, FL angler and his family ripped in four awesome White tunas in a very short time. These tasty delicacies make for some of the best sushi in the world.  They also nailed this excellent Jack Crevalle.

Great work by Mr. Tyler and the indefatigable Explorer.

On November 27 Captain David welcomed client Ian Raymond to the Explorer for a combination snorkling-fishing trip in the afternoon. It was a productive day highlighted by five tough little Needlefish on ice.

Then another great family came along on November 30 and had a fantastic trip on the Explorer. More Dorado, more White Tunas, and more big smiles from happy kids. Great work muchachos!

On December 2 Captain David parked the Explorer on a nice pot of Dorados. Yummy sandwiches and steaks from these lovely Mahi-mahis and another great report from the excellent Super Panga.

The Dorado bite stayed active on December 4 when client Leslie Schwan and her group had four BIG Dorado and ended up putting two of them in the fishbox. More than enough filets to go around for these fortunate anglers.

Wow, that's no camera trick...that fish really is taller than mate Pipio. Excellent work by Leslie Schwan and her group!

December 6 brought more nice action to the Explorer. They had a nice Dorado early in the afternoon and then backed that up with this 30lbs. Amberjack in the evening.

Excellent results for the dinner table by the 26-foot Super Panga. No matter what's happening offshore the Explorer always catches inshore species.

December 7 was a great day for client Matt Bleach and his wife on the Explorer! Captain David and Mate Pipio chased the blue water break a few miles offshore and found a school of lovely Dorados that ate like they haven't been fed in a year.

They filled the fishbox with this lovely 30lbs. Dorado.

They also had two nice Jack Crevalles and a Bonita, but lost a really big Dorado. Clearly the greenies are here in numbers because Pipio sighted a jumping Black Marlin about half a mile behind the spread catching some Dorado of it's own.

It's been another outstanding month on the 26-foot Super panga and Captain David shows no sign of letting up. The indomitable Explorer continues to reign as the undisputed pound-for-pound champion of Costa Rican sportfishing!

Captain William and the Wanderer lead the FishingNosara team from the front, posting more trips and more catches than any other boat in Garza Bay this month.

This month's scorecard is thick with Dorado and Cubera Snappers plus highlights like Alyssa Rose's nice Wahoo, a pair of Double header Sailfish releases and Frank Keres' amazing 350lbs. Black Marlin.

Trips this productive are rare for most boats; on the Wanderer such performances have become the norm.

Craig and Paula were joined by our good friends Charly and Silvia on the Wanderer for a great day of Yellowfin tuna harvesting on November 20.

Regular readers of this report remember that Charly and Silvia were on the big blue beauty exactly one year ago for the most productive day of Yellowfin tuna fishing in recent memory; Jog your memory by Watching the video or reading the post.

So here we are 364 days later, and what do you think happened?

Whoa! Those are some big  tunas...it's amazing that they could hold these things up for the pictures let alone pull them out of the water. Great work by Craig, Paula, Charly and Silvia on some amazing angling!

Kinda eerie if you think about it...

Craig with the smallest of the 6 Tunas

This is why Alex lifts weights.

Captain Josh Eldridge and his wife Jennifer were in Nosara celebrating their 6th wedding anniversary on November 19, so obviously the perfect way for the IGFA-certified charter captain from Nantucket to celebrate was with some high-powered billfish hunting on the Wanderer.

Captain Josh and his wife had a super nice day with five Sailfish releases (including a Double header, see below) backed up by a 30 lbs. Dorado for the dinner table.

"We had great time with William and Alex!" -Captain Josh Eldridge via email

Good early action on the Wanderer on November 22 with client Courtney Whitehurst and her friends. They staying inshore where the water was coral green and the group boated fifteen Bonitas and a nice Jack on just a 2.5 hr trip.

That's a fish on every 9 minutes if you're scoring at home. Great work ladies!

Legendary Nosara angler Richmond Phipps was back on the Wanderer for a pair of trips on November 22 and 23. Naturally this spells trouble for any billfish in the area.

She had a very special group with her this time: her family! The posse consisted of son Daniel, daughter Brooke, daughter-in-law Maria Yetty, and several of her grandkids visiting from the United States for Thanksgiving.

"Ever see a 15 year old kid who says he never caught anything trolling on the end of a mean Sail?" writes Richmond. "It was great."

Awesome release by Oliver and Zeke Sheilds-Wald!

The Phipps posse released this Sailfish and lost a big Yellowfin tuna on the first day. On their second trip the group stayed inshore and had an absolute feeding frenzy on their hands.  Maria Yetty was the hot rod catching several tasty White tunas.

The big fish was this 20lbs. Amberjack, but they backed that catch up with a total of four White Tunas, five Jack Crevalles and a pair of nice Bonitas.

November 24 capped off a week of icebreakers for FishingNosara; the Eldridge family got the season's first Double header billfish release, next Craig Sutton released the first marlin of the season.

Then on the famous Wanderer clients Alyssa and Alexander Rose caught the first Wahoo of the season.

Captain William set the blue beauty aside a school of spinning porpoises and after catching two small Bonitas the singing of the reel let it be known that a big missle of a fish was on the hook.

Wahoo are extremely fast and hard striking game, and pound for pound they fight just as hard as a Marlin. Catching a silver bullet like this one is so small feat...congratulations to Alyssa Rose and her group on this great catch.

Timothy Patrick Riley and his family closed out Thanksgiving day with an afternoon fishing trip on the Wanderer on November 24. The skies turned overcast...combine that with the green water close to shore and you have the recipe for some Dorado devastation.

They caught a half-dozen of the tasty green morsels which should definitely make for a hardy feast. That's some nice family fishing by the Riley family!

Every trip is a fresh adventure on the Wanderer, as client Mark and his buddies got on a variety of fish that have been a bit scarce this season on their November 25 trip. First up, they boated a pair of Cubera Snappers weighing between 20lbs. and 30lbs.

They grabbed another rather exotic piece of meat in the form of this Cierro mackerel. Named for it's zero shaped spots ('Cierro' means 'zero' in Spanish), this little fella is one of the best tasting fish in the sea.

Nice work by the Wanderer in proving that there is good action to be found all over the inshore reefs.

Craig got back in the billfishing swing of things on November 26 with reports of two more Black marlin on the Wanderer. The first big Black broke the hook just alongside the boat, but the second Marlin was a clean leader release.

No release shot this time...we will trade a safe release for a photograph any day, and this Marlin was too big to be messing around with.

Also our main man Jeff Grosshandler made swift work of this nice 25lbs. Dorado for the dinner table. Great offshore action from the FishingNosara flagship!

On the morning of November 28 we received a report of five White Tunas and and some Bonitas from client Jeff Sampson from Colorado. Jeff has fished in a couple of times in Nosara before, but this was his first trip with Captain William on the famous Wanderer.

After the inshore harvest, they decided to go offshore and hunt billfish.

They had a few nice Sailfish in the spread throughout the day and released 3 of the beautiful behemoths before returning to Garza.

Great work by Mr. Sampson in displaying the patience and perseverance required for great billfish success...third trip is a charm!

The famous Wanderer was back in action on December 3 with walk-up client Fred and his pal enlisting the blue beauty for a half-day of offshore trolling. The nice blue water was only a few miles out and the action was intense.

They missed on a few chances at Sailfish but managed to pile the fishbox high with Dorado meat.

December 4 brought Derek and Cynthia Bowker from the tiny town of Joesph, Oregon to the Wanderer where this husband and wife team caught a trio of MASSIVE Sailfish in Costa Rica that should have everyone back home talking.

The first one slammed the outrigger bait and Captain William was quick on the draw to snap this excellent photo:

First Mate Alex brought the first monster in close and executed a perfect release.

It's hunting buddy wasn't far behind and torpedoed down the center exhaust alley munching baits the whole way. Alex presented a naked ballyhoo rig and Sailfish number two hooked up within 25 feet of the transom.

Captain William followed some dolphins around looking for meat fish and although the Wanderer had a shot at a 30lbs. Tuna and a mysteriously huge Dorado, the fishbox stayed clean this time.

However the day was saved by a late Sailfish release, the third of the day. Fantastic fishing from the Oregon-based Team Bowker!

On December 12 Jeff Grosshandler was back in action with a special guest: his uncle Arthur. The boys enlisted Captain William and First Mate Alex for an offshore billfish hunt on the mighty Wanderer.

These guys are used to fishing the brutal waters of the Northeast Atlantic where a 120 mile trip to deep water is the norm.

Quite a change of pace to ride for 15 minutes and be in 600 feet of water for these New Jersey anglers!

They trolled the blue water and had two good shots at Pacific Sailfish.

The first one spit the hook, but his buddy gulped the ballyhoo from the long shotgun line and the fight was on!

The mighty Sailfish bucked and danced, tail-walking and grey-hounding the whole way but Arthur Grosshandler kept tension on the line as Captain William expertly backed the Wanderer toward the fish. (Watch the Video!

A brief fight ensued and First Mate Alex professionally handled and released this beauty unstressed and unharmed.

"We had a good fight and my uncle and I had a great time. Alex and William really are a great team, Alex very much impressed my uncle....he was smiles ear to ear. Plus the weather was great and hopefully we will get some more on Wednesday." -Jeff Grosshandler

Most recently client Frank Keres returned to shore with a big smile on December 13. He booked the Wanderer for a offshore billfish hunt and his persistence was rewarded with not one but two fish of a lifetime.

Around 1:30pm the first big fish came calling and it was a gigantic Sailfish. A short fight and perfect release ensued; little did Frank and his group know that this monster was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Not 15 minutes after releasing the sailfish, 'El Cachudo Grande' (Big Marlin in gringo) came barreling through the spread. The fight was intense but Mr. Keres managed to keep the fish calm and motivated toward the Wanderer.

Captain William expertly kept the angler in a position of strength while in the cockpit First Mate Alex billed and released the fish with his trademark fearlessness.

Excellent work by the Keres group and the mighty Wanderer!

The big blue beauty is primed to continue this record-setting pace through the end of the month and into 2012. We have many clients booked for the coming months but there is always a chance we can squeeze you in.

Get you dates figured out and get in touch with Craig soon!

More News from FishingNosara

Amazing catch from the Nosara River! This monsterous snook was caught by local Nosara man Martin Ramirez on December 6. The IGFA World Record for this fish is 57 lb 12 oz lbs. and was caught way back in 1991 in Quepos, Costa Rica.

I think it is fair to say that record is shattered, and the new title belongs to Nosara! Martin claims he caught a bigger one last year that was basically the same girth but was longer.

Of course we are off the beaten path here so no digital fish scales or IGFA observers, therefore no record application.

Still one heck of a fish! This is what I mean when I tell people that the Snook fishing in Costa Rica is world-class just like the offshore billfishing.

Send this pic around to your buddies who think that a giant Snook is a 20 pounder; then get your passport together and get the heck on down here!

Javier also has been doing work on the Snook in the river mouth. Check out this more typical snook he pulled in recently...El jefe is doing his part to Hook the Future.

Take a listen to El Jefe himself getting on the air of the famous La Buena Pescas Programa de Radio on December 10. Captain Atanes is the host of this show out of the Tampa / St. Petersburg / Clearwater region and the show has defined itself as the preeminent Spanish-language fishing broadcast in the whole state.

Click here to hear Javier's fishing report from Nosara, CR

Thanks to Captain Sergio Atanes and the whole team at ReelFishy.com! Listen for more reports from Javier every Saturday on La Buena Pescas

In other action around Garza, Captain Eduardo on the Nice n' Tight brought in and released this nice Rooster Fish on December 9th.

Great work Captain Eduardo and the Nice n' Tight.

Finally, many readers sent comments on Captain David's beautiful rod rack he built for our vintage Safari cart last month.

First Mate Alex (who is an amazing carpenter in his own right) wasn't about to let his good friend get the best of him, so he set out on his own woodworking mission.

The result is this beautiful rod holder to mount to the Wanderer's fighting chair.

Two things to notice here:

1.) I was just at the St. Pete and Ft. Lauderdale Boat shows and I did not see this level of woodworking craftsmanship, even with all the big-money boat builders in attendance.

Between the wood grain and the stain this piece has a finish that looks a mile deep.

2.) Ya gotta love a guy who does this on his day off! For a man who puts in 12-hour workdays on the water to sacrifice his own time shows Alex's dedication to his boat and the FishingNosara team.

2011 St. Petersburg Sail and Power Boat Show

It was a real thrill to take the show on the road to the 2011 St. Petersburg Sail and Power Boat Show.

Craig, Paula and Matty met thousands of great folks from the Tampa/St. Pete area and made new friends with all kinds of vendors.

We even managed to tick off the Coasties in the neighboring booth by playing AC/DC too loud, so that's good too.

Big thanks to Chris Fleming of Show Management for making this event a huge success for us.

We look forward to seeing all of you again real soon. Pura Vida!

               Salt Life Big Wave Challenge

The Salt Life Big Wave Challenge is an event that honors the surfer and photographer who capture the most popular big wave shot as voted on by thousands of online fans.

Great waves and great shots by these NE Florida legends!

Casa Neptune Repair

One of Nosara Paradise Rental's most endearing features is our Nature Preserve. Countless clients have enjoyed the tranquility of monkeys sunning in the trees overhead while pizotes meander through the grounds.

It's not always that nice...in this installment of When Nature Attacks we look at what happens when the roof of our beloved Casa Neptune encounters the crown of a massive Guanacaste Tree:

As a Floridan who has put more than one roof on a house, I thought that this repair would take weeks if not months.

Imagine my surprise to receive this picture from Javier just six days later:

We've been telling y'all that Javier is a building legend for years now, but this project really takes the cake. I don't know how they did it and I don't want to know.

Fantastic work by Javier, Grevan, and the rest of Nosara Paradise Rentals team on this repair.

When nature attacks, we fix it!
