Greetings!

This is Craig Sutton with the

FishingNosara July 2011 Fishing Report. To sum this report up...OMG! (That's 'Oh My Gosh' to all our readers over 40 years old)

This time of year we always get some Hall of Fame catches but 2011 has been the best in recent memory. It looks like we might need to build another wing onto the Hall of Fame if this kind of action continues!

Leading the charge is Captain William and First Mate Alex on the infamous

Wanderer, which was lucky enough to have several hardcore groups for some serious rod-bendin' on giant Yellowfin Tunas, big numbers of Sailfish and a nice Marlin release. Be sure to check out all the new Hall of Fame inductees this month, especially the 100+lbs. Yellowfin Tunas!

Not to be outdone, Captain David on the Explorer also hosted several dedicated fishermen for some world-class action this month highlighted by tons of Yella Fellas and superior inshore action.

Captain Eduardo on the big girl Sportsman and the legendary Nice n' Tight also scored big on the inshore action. Captain Eduardo is always on the bite and making clients happy.

We are hoping this year that late July and August will be as good as it gets with some big Marlin, massive Cuberas, and more of the 100+lbs. Yellowfin Tunas.

When I get back to Nosara in August I am aiming to once again catch the year's biggest Marlin in August just like last year:

There are still some great dates open and we are offering special discounts on rental houses until August 31st.

Captain David and the super panga

Explorer have redefined perceptions about the required boat size for great Costa Rican Sportfishing.

This 26 foot craft is expertly rigged and 100% laid out with fishing in mind. The incomparable Captain David squeezes every inch of performance out of the Explorer and she has satisfied many clients this season.

Often imitated, never duplicated; this is the baddest panga boat that this area has ever seen.

For the complete construction history and video of the maiden voyage of the Explorer, check out the Explorer Story.

June 14 was a great day for client Scott Howell on the Explorer with lots of variety and tons of meat in the box. The day started off strong with three Rainbow Runners, a feisty little 6lbs. Red Snapper, and a 10lbs. Yellowtail Snapper. They were just about to call it a day when a school of Yella Fellas wandered under the anchor and started popping off lines.

Scott and Captain David boated 10 nice Yellowfin Tuna during this late-day feeding frenzy, turning what was a great day into a legendary day for the Explorer.

The Yellowfin Tuna have been all over the reef this month, however the Explorer always seems to have another trick up her sleeve. Captain David stumbled upon a hot spot of the elusive Rainbow Runners this morning and with newlywed clients Jennie and Johnny on the reels, they piled the fishbox to the brim with 10 of these tasty morsels.

The Rainbow Runner (also called Rainbow Tunney) boasts delicious white meat and is a very challenging fish to hook and a strong fighter. It has been quite a while since a boat managed to wear out this many Rainbows. For an idea of how strong the Rainbow Runner can be, check out this picture:

Notice that while Jennie has the rod doubled over, Captain David has a firm hold of the fighting belt in one hand and a white-knuckle grip on the 3 inch. Stainless Steel superstructure of the Explorer. Without this chain of strength something would have been swimming away, either the client or the fish.

Client Wendy Parker and Linda Jolly had a great day of action highlighted by a 60lbs. Rooster fish release. Rooster fish are a very exotic and unique species, so even though their release is not required by law (like Marlin and Sailfish), FishingNosara captains always release pez gallos.

Wendy did score two nice Yellowfin Tunas and a Ponpano for the dinner table, and got the thrill of catching the much-sought-after Roosterfish.

Richard Reiner had a nice morning on July 2 with Captain David on the Explorer. They stayed near Garza Bay and bottom fished the reef under the Kingfish green water. Though they lost a big Dorado, they did catch a nice 30lbs. Cubera Snapper and two 15lbs. Yellowfin Tunas.

They also caught this wee little Cubera but threw him back...we'll check back on him in about ten years when he's a 90lbs. behemoth.

This day's haul will make for some fine dining back on shore. Great work Richard!

Big day of inshore action for the Explorer with the Harlins for a morning half-day trip. They had a great time and caught four nice 15lbs. Yellowfin Tunas and fifteen Twofins estimated to weigh between 10-12lbs.

Later in the day on the Explorer Franck Desoblin from Gecko Verde in Samara choose the Super Panga for a half day and caught four Yellowfin tunas and three more Twofins.

On July 7 on the Explorer client Guy Valente caught a nice Yellowfin Tuna and and ten meaty Black Tunas with Captain David...Great results for just 2.5 hours on the water!

July has been one of FishingNosara's busiest ever and the Yellowfin Tuna have been chewing the bottoms out of the boats! Captain David welcomed client Ronny Marchena and his friends aboard the Explorer on July 10 for a quick 3 hour trip and caught TWELVE Yella Fellas.

How's that for three hours of fishing? Captain David didn't waste any time getting on the fish. While these catches were football-sized at best (unlike the arm-load sized Yellas we've been catching offshore), twelve fish is a great haul no matter how big they are.

Great work by the Explorer... it' s not everyday you average a fish every 15 minutes!

FishingNosara was pleased to welcome back Greg Vetto from and his friends for an afternoon of fishing on the Explorer with Captain David. A few years ago Mr. Vetto was one of the first clients to fish on the Wanderer and a reunion with Captain David spelled trouble for the inshore reef fish.

Greg and his posse knocked out several nice Yellowfin on a short three-hour trip. It may have been pouring rain on shore, but on the Explorer it has been raining Yellowfin Tuna.

Captain David and the Explorer have made their reputation by disproving assumed notions about what a 26-foot Super Panga can do. On July 14 with client Christopher Granda from South Tampa aboard, Captain David once again gave notice that the Explorer is a true world-class sportfishing vessel.

They started inshore to pick up some Bonitas for bait and Christopher brought in this excellent Ponpano. An excellent tasting fish, this particular Ponpano is one of the biggest we've caught this season.

Things got serious as Captain David pushed offshore away from the torrential rains bearing down the mountain. He put out a modified high-speed lure setup and almost immediately this beefy Dorado gulped down a bonita strip appetizer with a circle hook on the side.

A quick fight and this 40lbs. Dorado was headed for the dinner table. He also got another smaller Dorado estimated around 15lbs.

Captain David got the spread back out and after a little more trolling a curious Sailfish came along whacking at the teaser. On the way back to rob the long baits, this Sailfish fell for a pitched ballyhoo with Captain David on the other end expertly setting the circle hook.

The fight was on but this fish was no match for Chris Granda on the reel. Twenty minutes after hook-up this Sailfish was safely released.

Great end to a fine day of fishing by Captain David and Chris Granda!

The Explorer has proven to be an excellent craft in her first year of action. We are very proud of Captain David's growth as a boatman and consider him one of our finest anglers. There's still a chance to fish with Captain David on the Explorer this season, but you have to hurry up to reserve the handful of dates he has left open.

Captain William on the Wanderer has set the bar high this season for billfish releases.

The big blue beauty also has a knack for inshore reef harvests, monster-sized bottom fishing, and pinpoint topwater strikes.

With First Mate Alex running the spread and the Captain William's wisdom and steady hand on the equipment, any fish that sees this boat knows that it is already too late.

Now in her second season as the FishingNosara flagship, the 31' Wanderer had a fantastic month of July. The Wanderer is the cream of the crop when it comes to world class Costa Rican sportfishing!

On June 18 Charlie Pharr and his friends booked the Wanderer for a half day and started the morning off right. Nothing feels better than putting TWO 60lbs. Yellowfin Tuna in the box before noon! Then they raised two Sailfish but could not convince them to eat.

By the end of the trip they had two 60+ lbs. Yellas and also a couple of 20lbs. From football-sized to football-player-sized, the Yellowfin Tuna bite was ON FIRE this month!

June 19 brought an incredible Marlin release to the Wanderer! Client Steve Terny and his group were on the big blue billfish bruiser and caught the true fish of a lifetime. This Black Marlin release was the result of an intense but economical fight; only 35 minutes from hook-up to release.

As usual Captain William and First Mate Alex coordinated the operation with fluid efficiency and Mr. Terny was up to the ultimate angler's challenge.

What a great catch, and as always a safe release. Great work by Steve Terny and the crew of the Wanderer!

Clients Ron Bias and Linda Branning were aboard the Wanderer on June 20 for some billfish hunting and they were not disappointed. Ron is a good friend from Jacksonville, FL who we met at the Southeast US Boat Show a few months ago so we are extra-excited to report that he and Linda released this awesome Pacific Sailfish.

Safe release by First Mate Alex and another superb job of hunting by Captain William.

The Wanderer was pleased to welcome Jack Thames and his group from South Carolina for some inshore fishing on June 21. Jack is a very experienced angler and Captain William kept him on the fish with the rods bent.

First, Mr. Thames took advantage of the schools of Rainbow Runners that have been swarming through the area the last few days. Then one of the deep lines ripped off and the telltale red flash meant that the mighty Cubera Snapper had thrown down the gauntlet

Mr. Thames outlasted the big red Buick and was treated to a 60lbs. Cubera Snapper. Later in the evening they boated another great Cubera Snapper, though not quite as massive as the first.

On June 23 Craig was in Nosara to wrap up the acquisition of two new Nosara Paradise Rentals' properties. If you think that means the billfish were safe, you were wrong.

Craig was on the FishingNosara flagship Wanderer for a short afternoon billfish hunt. In the course of three hours they raised four sailfish and released one.

They also had a curious Dorado come through the spread knocking at the teaser and a few other mystery nibbles.

June 24 brought some more nice billfish action to the Wanderer. The blue beauty was out hunting for a half-day and had a swift pair of Sailfish come tearing through the spread. One pickpocketed the long lines for the ballyhoo, but his hunting buddy wasn't so lucky. A quick fight ensured and the Wanderer released an awesome Sailfish.

The Wanderer has become the favorite choice for family fishing trips and novice anglers learning the craft of Costa Rica sportfishing because of her luxurious amenities and smooth ride. June 28th's trip proved that she is also fit for a quartet of hardcore anglers to get down to serious business.

Rick and his posse booked the Wanderer for a full day of reef warfare and they stacked the fishbox full of casualties. Highlighted by a pair of 30lbs. Amberjacks and a 20lbs. Cubera Snapper, these fellas were dealing with bending rods all day long.

Tasty catches for the dinner table to match their previous Sailfish release. As always the Wanderer is up to any conceivable angling challenge!

Great action on the Wanderer for clients Chuck, Rick Blackburn, Rick Damron, and Scottie on June 30. They went offshore looking for some big fish; Captain William was following a large mancha (school) of porpoises throughout the day. With the Marlin and Sailfish scarce, they switched over to topwater casting with one of our favorite lures the Williamson Jet Popper.

'El Popper' was irresistible to the big Yellowfins! The group caught several massive Yella Fellas, highlighted by this 90lbs. behemoth! Even David couldn't help but smile at this great accomplishment by the Doctors. Nice work by the Wanderer!

Chuck Harris, Rick Blackburn, Rick Damron, and Scottie had the Yellowfin Tuna on the ropes for their final day of fishing on the Wanderer. With Captain David on loan again from the Explorer and Concierge Numero Uno Manuel on board, they once again utilized 'El Popper' and ceder plugs to present a spread that the Yella Torpedos could not resist.

The first few fish were in the 15lbs.-20lbs. range and they got bigger with each catch. With four footballs in the fishbox, boys were shocked by a line ripping off like it was hooked to an oil rig. A knock-down drag-out brawl ensured, with the boys emerging victorious. Think of it this way... have you ever made this face?

If not, it is because you have never caught this fish:

This is a Hall of Fame catch if I've ever seen one...the perfect end to several solid days of fishing on the Wanderer. Give it up for Captain William, First Mate Alex, Mate David and this fine team of anglers!

Hunter Huber and his group started the first of several day of fishing on the Wanderer with a bang on July 3. By 10am they had a Double Sailfish release and within the hour had released an additional Sailfish.

The Huber posse released another one around 3pm and added two beefy Yellowfin Tuna for the dinner table. Great work by Captain David and First Mate Alex to get these fellas introduced to Costa Rican Sportfishing with a great day.

The next day on the Wanderer Captain William took the Huber group a little bit offshore to troll for some monsters, and they found the BIG Yellas out by a school of porpoises. They had several multiple hook-ups and kept some nice behemoths for the fishbox.

Huber and his group were back on the Wanderer and spent the day in the reef beating the heck out of the big bottom fish on July 5. They started out by trolling to for Bonitas to use as live bait and were quickly successful; in no time at all they were fully armed with eight juicy black bonitas, plus got a nice Amberjack.

As always William and Alex sent the bait swimming to the bottom and the frenzy commenced. Hunter and the boys finally let up on the monsters but only after boating a 30lbs. Cubera, a 35lbs. Broomtail Grouper and a 20lbs Amberjack.

Wonderful day for the Huber group to follow up their great multiple billfish performance earlier in the week. After his return to Virgina Mr. Huber sent along this note:

Craig,

This trip far exceeded our expectations, it was a 100% success. I can't say enough good things about the accommodations, customer service and overall quality.

Manuel did an outstanding job- he was extremely organized and took care of everything in a very professional and courteous manner.

William and Alex were fantastic. They work extremely well together and it was obvious that they both worked very hard to put us on fish. It was a real pleasure fishing with them on the Wanderer.

And of course- the fishing was great. We had non-stop action and I think in total caught nine species of fish.

As soon as I get caught up at work I'll be looking into flights for my next trip to Nosara.

Thanks again

Hunter F. Huber
Richmond, VA

On behalf of the Captains, Crews, and Staff of FishingNosara and Nosara Paradise Rentals we can't wait to have you back.

Pura Vida Hunter! PS

I don't know if the fish are as enthusiastic after the whipping you guys put on them.

On July 6 we were pleased to welcome the Jacksonville-based father and son fishing team of Robert and Jeff Birtalan to Nosara for the week. They got started on the Wanderer and had several hungry Sailfish in the spread.

They had a double hook-up but the Sailfish hunting buddies slyly cut the lines against each other and escaped.

More great billfish action from the Wanderer with Bob and Jeff Birtalan on July 7. They followed up their Sailfish release with three more successful releases. These Jacksonville guys know what to do when big fish come calling!

Robert and Jeff Birtalan delivered a Hall of Fame performance on a fantastic 5 hour fishing trip on the Wanderer on July 8. They had 8 Sailfish come tearing through the spread throughout the day and successfully caught and released five of these beautiful behemoths.

The highlight was this awesome Double Release; excellent work by First Mate Alex to ensure the safety of the fish, crew, boat and anglers.

All of this billfish releasing will work up an appetite, so Mr. Birtalan also brought home this tasty 15lbs. Dorado.

Jeff and Bob Birtalan capped off their amazing week of fishing in Nosara with more great Sailfish releases and a Yellowfin Tuna that can easily be called one of the biggest of the season.

As in the previous few days, Captain William took the Wanderer offshore into the blue water alley holding swarms of massive Pacific Sails. Once again the Birtalan gang hooked up two of these amazing monsters, and as always both fish were safely released

.

Later on the half-day trip they met up with a MASSIVE 120+lbs. Yellowfin Tuna and after a vigorous 45-minute battle they successfully put this monster in the fishbox.

Too bad these guys are leaving today because that is a LOT of sushi. I'm sure that folks all around Garza and Nosara Paradise Rentals are chowing down on this lovely fish at this very moment. We look forward to seeing Jeff at the 31st Annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament this weekend and hear some great fishing stories first hand.

Great work by Future Hall of Famers Bob and Jeff Birtalan and the Wanderer on a great week of fishing!

Captain William and the Wanderer had a fantastic day of offshore billfish scores and inshore Yella fella catches for client Gerald Wyles and his group.

They released four Sailfish including a Double header plus added ten nice Yellowfin Tunas for the dinner table.

Great work by both boats...proving that the fishing in Costa Rica doesn't cool off until the rains come in early September.
