Greetings!

This is Craig Sutton, the US Representative for FishingNosara.com with the June report.

While the blue water vanished for two weeks in the middle of May, the inshore bite was alive with big Yellowfin Tunas and Cuberras that just won't quit.

After I left on the May 23 the blue water returned and so did the big Marlin!

Captain William and Alex caught their biggest Black Marlin of the year with our new friends Tyson Wegman and Marcia Mulford. Be sure to check out the photos below...they really lit it up for just two short trips. The Wanderer backed that big release up with several more this month. Captain William can make a big Marlin seem meek with his skills at the helm.

Captain David on the Explorer has continued his year-long lightning pace. Myself and Paula Price loaded up the Explorer with nice size Yellowfin in just a couple of hours on May 20 and David has done the same with a lots of other lucky clients this month.

Captain Vibert on the Cabo had our old friend Ivan Deluca and Tomas out for several days of hardcore Marlin fishing and the photos show the big results. Congratulations Ivan on a super catch.

This year so far has been one of the best in recent memory and the best is yet to come. I am heading to Nosara next week for business but hopefully I will get a chance to try to locate a Marlin or two.

The end of June and beginning of July should be one for the record books. Remember last year the fishing was outstanding till late August and this year should be just as good. For example, last year the Wanderer caught their biggest Marlin of the year on August 14th (Click Here to watch the video).

We have several serious groups rolling into town and they will take no prisoners. Stand by because next month will be good!

The calendar is looking mighty full...not many dates left before the rain gets here in late August but if you can make it down call me and we will squeeze you in.

 Tight Lines y Pura Vida!

This season has been a great one for Captain Vibert. The Master Captain has tapped Marcos, Jr. as his new First Mate and the young man has already made himself an invaluable member of the team. Marcos' family is the Garza Bay transport staff, so as a Mate he combines youthful hunger and energy with a lifetime of experience on the water.

On May 28, Master Captain Vibert on the Cabo welcomed back Tomas and Ivan DeLuca, longtime friends and repeat clients for a day of offshore billfish hunting. They had some good early action on the troll then nailed this sweet 150lbs. Striped Marlin.

On May 23 Captain Vibert welcome a nice visiting family to the Cabo for a half-day trip and everyone had a great time. Check out this mini-Dorado caught by this mini-Angler. The Master Captain always delivers great trips for his clients big and small.

Most recently Captain Vibert welcomed client Adolfo Malavasi for a full day of fishing on the Cabo and they had a banner day. The first big catch was this amazing Needlefish on a slow trolled cedar plug.

Needlefish

Then things really started to heat up with a variety of Snappers and Tunas. This White Tuna is one of the tastiest fish in the sea and a tough fighting fish.

Client Adolfo and Captain Vibert

Realistically, we could talk all day about the Master Captain's skills on the water, but how about we let the fishbox do the talking:

Viberts Full Fishbox

Captain Vibert shows no sign of letting up this season. If you are looking for an experienced Captain with the boat to deliver all kinds of fishing, look no further than Captain Vibert and the Cabo.

Captain William on the Wanderer is setting the pace this season for billfish releases. The big blue beauty is also fit for the purpose of inshore reef assaults, anchored bottom fishing, and topwater casting.

With First Mate Alex running the cockpit and the Captain William on the wheel, any fish that gets close to this boat does not stand a chance.

Now in her second season as the FishingNosara flagship, the 31' Wanderer had a fantastic month of June with lots of Tunas, a wonderful Roosterfish, a pair of excellent Marlin release, and yet another Double Sailfish catch.

The Wanderer is on top of her game!

On the afternoon of May 13, Ben Richards
on the Wanderer caught eight big Yellowfin Tunas, four Black Tunas, and two Blue Runners on a 5 hr. cruise. That is a heckuva lot of fish for just a half-day on the water.

Craig and Paula went hunting offshore for billfish on May 15 with slow action, so on May 16 they kept the Wanderer inshore over the legendary reef Pincha Padre.

They had a field day on Jack Crevalles and Bonita using a basic knocker rig with black tuna chunks for bait. Simple approach, but deadly effective. When the full moon came up later in the afternoon so did the big Cubera Snappers...unfortunately they mugged the bait so hard they forgot to eat the hooks.

Paula with Tuna

Craig and Paula's scorecard for the afternoon showed five Yellowfin Tunas, six Bonitas, four Jack Crevalles and a huge Needlefish.

On May 17 Benjamin and his group on the Wanderer absolutely destroyed the Yellowfin Tuna. The Yella Bite was full-on and Captain William took them for all they're worth.

On May 19 Craig, Paula, and local Dan Rey took the Wanderer offshore again looking for the blue water break. After 8 miles and only a few jumping Sailfish, they thought better of the offshore action and returned inshore where most of that week's good catches had been made. On cue they nailed a pair of Yellowfin tunas for the fishbox.

With billfish hunting you must be prepared to put in long hours trolling while waiting for that one big strike. Despite the zero releases, the late-day tuna scores really proves Captain William's mettle and never-give-up spirit...even on a bad day the Wanderer catches fish.

Did you know that Jim Morrison is still alive and fishing with us in Nosara?

Just kidding, that's our good buddy Dan Rey with a pair of Yellowfins, but the resemblance is striking!

On May 21 we had an excellent sunset fishing trip on the Wanderer with Craig, Paula, Daniel, Alvaro and his wife Patty. The highlight of the three hour tour was the release of a beautiful 35lbs. Rooster Fish by Patty.

In addition the rest of the party knocked out five Bonitas and three tasty football-sized Yellowfin Tunas. This shows how the right crew and the right boat can deliver great fishing action in just three short hours. Great job by the Wanderer!

May 28 was a fantastic day on the famous Wanderer. Client Jesse Feldman and his posse had a counter to Vibert's great Marlin catch from earlier that day...How about this 300lbs. Blue Marlin release?

As icing on the cake they boated a pair of nice yella fellas for the table. It used to be said that the Marlin bite turns off after Easter...whatever! Great work by the Wanderer and the Cabo to prove that the Marlin bite down here does in fact stay on well into September.

Make some room in the Hall of Fame for Tyson Wegman! After an excellent day with Captain David on the Explorer, Mr. Wegman and Marcia took to the Wanderer with the sole intention of catching billfish on May 30...what happened was a legendary day of multiple Marlin and Sailfish releases by the big blue beauty.

Tyson and Marcia got on the water early and at around 8am the bill collector came calling. First Mate Alex set the hook in the first Sailfish and handed off to Tyson when immediately the long outrigger popped out of the clip...another Sailfish was on the line!

The combination of top-notch tackle, consistent angling, and Captain William's stellar boat handling brought home this amazing Double Sailfish Release.

This kind of catch is enough to earn Tyson and Marcia enshrinement in the Hall of Fame, but the fish that came calling an hour later at 9:30am was truly the fish of a lifetime:

Estimated weight: 500+lbs.

Released: You betcha.

First Mate Alex: He may look exhausted, but you try wrangling a half-ton of billfish in less than an hour and we'll see how you feel!

This capped off two excellent days of fishing for Tyson Wegman and we can't wait to see him back in Nosara soon...the billfish may not feel this way!

Let's check out her pictures from this exact moment in time:

Fantastic work by Captain William, Alex, and Tyson Wegman! You sir, are now officially a legend.

"She is in fact a Black Marlin between 450-500lbs, at first thought to be a Blue Marlin. Worked her aggresively standing and got her boatside in less than hour.

We released this fish after after pulling her a good while, her color returned vividly...spectacular!" -Tyson Wegman

Speaking of Hall of Famer anglers, our neighbor Ron LaGro and our great friend Catherine Chase were back on the Wanderer on June 11 attempting to repeat their legendary performance that landed them in the FishingNosara Hall of Fame back on March 5. If you don't remember that catch, check out the June 2011 issue of InTheBite Magazine and look for this:

Captain William and First Mate Alex showed them a great time and kept them on the fish, and by the end of the day they had two Jacks, six Bonitas, a nice Rainbow Runner, and a tasty Yellowfin Tuna. Another sweet performance from boat, crew, and of course Ron and Catherine.

The Wanderer has set the bar high for the rest of the FishingNosara fleet this season. Captain William and First Mate Alex are outstanding anglers and those looking for World-class sportfishing experience should book the Wanderer soon as her calendar is very full.

Captain David and the Super Panga Explorer have redefined perceptions about the required boat size for great Costa Rican Sportfishing.

This 26 foot craft is expertly rigged and 100% laid out with fishing in mind. The incomparable Captain David squeezes every inch of performance out of the Explorer and she has satisfied many clients this season.

We have heard from Blue Water Towers that several of our readers have inquired about getting their own Explorer-style radar arch. Often imitated, never duplicated...for the complete construction history and video of the maiden voyage of the Explorer, check out the Explorer Story.

On May 15 Captain David welcomed Josh to the Explorer for a Saturday fishing trip that yielded an amazing catch. Check out this HUGE Roosterfish! Just like our billfish catches, all Roosterfish are released.

May 24 was a fantastic day of fishing for client Marc on the Explorer! On just a 3.5 hour trip Captain David put him on fish early and often. First up were four nice Yellowfin Tunas and a pretty Rainbow Runner. They switched over to bottom fishing and harvested some nice beasts: five meaty Jacks and a 50+lbs. Cubera Snapper.

So one day I was sitting around with Captain David as a gully-washing monsoon poured down on Guiones Beach and asked him, "What do you do when it rains?" His response was pure Tico: "Fish in the rain."

May 26 reminded me of that statement because as the rain poured down from the mountains, Captain David and the Explorer welcomed client Daniel Altari for a three hour fishing trip. Despite high seas, gusty winds and torrential rains they still had some action on the inshore reefs. With one Yellowfin Tuna in the box, they called it a day before they really got soaked.

Tough day of fishing, but productive nonetheless.

Tyson Wegman joined Captain David on the Explorer for a quick 2.5hr trip on May 29 and packed every minute of it with action. Accompanied by the lovely Marcia, Mr. Wegman made a special trip to Nosara specifically to go fishing with the best pros in the country.

Captain David cemented his reputation by putting Mr. Wegman on six Yellowfin Tunas, two Blue Runners and a big Cubera Snapper who barely got away. They had a great time and filled up the Explorer's fishbox with enough Yellowfin sushi to last the rest of their trip.

On June 1 the Explorer welcomed Client Beau Bannerman and his children for a 2.5 hour sunset fishing trip yesterday and they had some great action. The fishbox was slapped full of five nice Yellowfin Tuna as the sun tucked away for the evening. Sushi time!

The hot streak continued on June 9 as Captain David welcome client Leo to the Super Panga for a trip to the honeyholes on the inshore reefs. On a quick 2.5 hour trip Leo pulled in a GIGANTIC 50+lbs. Cubera Snapper. He was so excited that he signed up for a second day of fishing right there on the spot.

Captain David welcomed client Daniel to the Explorer on June 11 and they did some serious work on the Yellowfin Tuna. With Garza Bay and the green mountains looming in the backround of Picha Padre, David parked the the 26-foot Super Panga in her usual spot on the reef. The classic Bonita chunk/knocker rig was the weapon of choice, and as always the Yella Fellas couldn't resist it.

Another great trip from Captain David and the Explorer.

Captain David is the go-to-guy for sunset fishing trips; these late-afternoon 3 hour trips are a great way to introduce kids and novice anglers to the joy of Costa Rica sport fishing without committing to the expense and exertion of a full day on the water.

Client Marc brought his daughter along for a sunset cruise on June 13 and checked in with this nice Yellowfin Tuna.

The Explorer has seen many first-time anglers try their hand at sport fishing, and Captain David's steady boat handling and genuine good nature guarantees great fishing memories to last a lifetime for these young anglers. The look on the little lady's face says it all!

Captain David and the Explorer have surpasses all expectations this season. In just 6 months on the water, this Super Panga is already a Costa Rica Sportfishing Legend!

Javier Hernandez, Shore Fishing Expert

May 25, 2011

General Manager of Nosara Paradise Rentals Javier Hernandez took a trip up to the Nosara River mouth for a late-night shore casting battle with the monstrous Snook who frequent this area.

Armed with a Rapala lipped lure and a regular spinning rod, this Snook was no match for Javier. He also lost a MASSIVE Snook but there are plenty more in this river.

Don't forget that we have more to offer than just blue water fishing...the mountain-fed rivers that roar through this area bring an abundance of life with them.

Either from shore or from a kayak, it is not unusual to haul in great Snook like this one.

Nice shot holding up the Sail...you think these guys are used to billfish or what?

Javier went fishing again on his birthday on June 9th and the River gave him another fine Snook for dinner. Just yesterday he caught this monster on a Rapala Lip Diver.

Great shore fishing by El Jefe!

  FishingNosara Tournament Updates

Kingbuster 400 - June 10-12, 2011

FishingNosara and Nosara Paradise Rentals were pleased to sponsor the Kingbuster 400 Tournament in St. Augustine, FL. This was the first major King Mackeral tournament of the season and one with a long history of 'setting the tone' for the tournament season.

This year's format was a single day Saturday shootout with the biggest fish taking home the prize. US Representative for FishingNosara Craig Sutton and the A-team (First Mate Carl Schmidt, Mate Andrew Herbenick, and Ms. Paula) on the Fishtastic caught a few decent Kingfish, but none worth writing home about.

Over 70 Junior Anglers participated on Friday with the winning Kingfish weighing in at an astounding 42lbs.; on Saturday the general tournament endured some rough seas and soft biting fish but still saw some 30lbs.-40lbs. King Mackerels in the box. Extra special thanks are due to Captain Don Dingman (Hook the Future) and Frank Joura for making this tournament a huge success. We can't wait to do it again next year.

Tom Cavin (left, grey shirt) and his girls celebrate their winning raffle ticket

It was an especially exciting day for Mr. Tom Cavin of Jacksonville who won a week in Casa Capitan and a half-day fishing with Captain David on the Explorer. He is aiming to bring the whole family down for the week sometime in August or November, and we are stoked to roll out the red carpet for him.

Great end to a great weekend!
