Captain William on the Wanderer is setting the pace this season for billfish releases. The big blue beauty is also fit for the purpose of inshore reef assaults, anchored bottom fishing, and topwater casting.
With First Mate Alex running the cockpit and the Captain William on the wheel, any fish that gets close to this boat does not stand a chance.
Now in her second season as the FishingNosara flagship, the 31' Wanderer had a fantastic month of June with lots of Tunas, a wonderful Roosterfish, a pair of excellent Marlin release, and yet another Double Sailfish catch.
The Wanderer is on top of her game!
On the afternoon of May 13, Ben Richards on the Wanderer caught eight big Yellowfin Tunas, four Black Tunas, and two Blue Runners on a 5 hr. cruise. That is a heckuva lot of fish for just a half-day on the water.
Craig and Paula went hunting offshore for billfish on May 15 with slow action, so on May 16 they kept the Wanderer inshore over the legendary reef Pincha Padre.
They had a field day on Jack Crevalles and Bonita using a basic knocker rig with black tuna chunks for bait. Simple approach, but deadly effective. When the full moon came up later in the afternoon so did the big Cubera Snappers...unfortunately they mugged the bait so hard they forgot to eat the hooks.
Craig and Paula's scorecard for the afternoon showed five Yellowfin Tunas, six Bonitas, four Jack Crevalles and a huge Needlefish.
On May 17 Benjamin and his group on the Wanderer absolutely destroyed the Yellowfin Tuna. The Yella Bite was full-on and Captain William took them for all they're worth.
On May 19 Craig, Paula, and local Dan Rey took the Wanderer offshore again looking for the blue water break. After 8 miles and only a few jumping Sailfish, they thought better of the offshore action and returned inshore where most of that week's good catches had been made. On cue they nailed a pair of Yellowfin tunas for the fishbox.
With billfish hunting you must be prepared to put in long hours trolling while waiting for that one big strike. Despite the zero releases, the late-day tuna scores really proves Captain William's mettle and never-give-up spirit...even on a bad day the Wanderer catches fish.
Did you know that Jim Morrison is still alive and fishing with us in Nosara?
Just kidding, that's our good buddy Dan Rey with a pair of Yellowfins, but the resemblance is striking!
On May 21 we had an excellent sunset fishing trip on the Wanderer with Craig, Paula, Daniel, Alvaro and his wife Patty. The highlight of the three hour tour was the release of a beautiful 35lbs. Rooster Fish by Patty.
In addition the rest of the party knocked out five Bonitas and three tasty football-sized Yellowfin Tunas. This shows how the right crew and the right boat can deliver great fishing action in just three short hours. Great job by the Wanderer!
May 28 was a fantastic day on the famous Wanderer. Client Jesse Feldman and his posse had a counter to Vibert's great Marlin catch from earlier that day...How about this 300lbs. Blue Marlin release?
As icing on the cake they boated a pair of nice yella fellas for the table. It used to be said that the Marlin bite turns off after Easter...whatever! Great work by the Wanderer and the Cabo to prove that the Marlin bite down here does in fact stay on well into September.
Make some room in the Hall of Fame for Tyson Wegman! After an excellent day with Captain David on the Explorer, Mr. Wegman and Marcia took to the Wanderer with the sole intention of catching billfish on May 30...what happened was a legendary day of multiple Marlin and Sailfish releases by the big blue beauty.
Tyson and Marcia got on the water early and at around 8am the bill collector came calling. First Mate Alex set the hook in the first Sailfish and handed off to Tyson when immediately the long outrigger popped out of the clip...another Sailfish was on the line!
The combination of top-notch tackle, consistent angling, and Captain William's stellar boat handling brought home this amazing Double Sailfish Release.
This kind of catch is enough to earn Tyson and Marcia enshrinement in the Hall of Fame, but the fish that came calling an hour later at 9:30am was truly the fish of a lifetime:
Estimated weight: 500+lbs.
Released: You betcha.
First Mate Alex: He may look exhausted, but you try wrangling a half-ton of billfish in less than an hour and we'll see how you feel!
This capped off two excellent days of fishing for Tyson Wegman and we can't wait to see him back in Nosara soon...the billfish may not feel this way!
Let's check out her pictures from this exact moment in time:
Fantastic work by Captain William, Alex, and Tyson Wegman! You sir, are now officially a legend.
"She is in fact a Black Marlin between 450-500lbs, at first thought to be a Blue Marlin. Worked her aggresively standing and got her boatside in less than hour.
We released this fish after after pulling her a good while, her color returned vividly...spectacular!" -Tyson Wegman
Speaking of Hall of Famer anglers, our neighbor Ron LaGro and our great friend Catherine Chase were back on the Wanderer on June 11 attempting to repeat their legendary performance that landed them in the FishingNosara Hall of Fame back on March 5. If you don't remember that catch, check out the June 2011 issue of InTheBite Magazine and look for this:
Captain William and First Mate Alex showed them a great time and kept them on the fish, and by the end of the day they had two Jacks, six Bonitas, a nice Rainbow Runner, and a tasty Yellowfin Tuna. Another sweet performance from boat, crew, and of course Ron and Catherine.
The Wanderer has set the bar high for the rest of the FishingNosara fleet this season. Captain William and First Mate Alex are outstanding anglers and those looking for World-class sportfishing experience should book the Wanderer soon as her calendar is very full.
