Greetings!

Craig Sutton, FishingNosaraThis is Craig Sutton of FishingNosara with the the April report.

First I want to thank and welcome all the new readers that signed up at the Southeast US Boat Show last weekend. I hope you enjoy reading it.

It is great to report that the bite has stayed good with no signs of slowing up. Myself, my right hand man Captain Jack and my left hand man Matty got back from Nosara on March 23 and we all got our fishing fix.

Captain Eduardo had some outstanding catches on the Nice n' Tight, but the highlight was his fantastic finish in the Ship of Fools Tournament with owner Andy Dygert aboard the battle wagon Sportsman. Captain Eduardo has his catching dialed in and the results are lots of fresh fish filets for his clients.

Captain Vibert on the fish-raising Cabo had several super outings including one trip with client Brett Hartin on the Cabo where they caught the elusive Ceda Snapper. Captain Vibert always makes his clients happy.

FishingNosara's rising star Captain David on the Explorer has continued to amaze everyone with his catches, including Matty, Jack, and myself in the Ship of Fools tournament. Captain David may have been in the smallest boat in the contest but the Explorer showed all the big boys that the size of the boat is of little concern to the big Costa Rica fish.

Captain William and Alex on the Wanderer have always been one of the area's best crews, but this report clearly shows their dominance. Captain William and Alex hosted new Hall of Fame inductees Morgan Tribble, Woods Payne, George Ramsey, and Ken Strickler for three days of blistering action. If they had entered the Ship of Fools Tournament they could have gone home with a big trophy. These Southern boys can really fish, and they have already re-booked for July.

Also Captain William and Alex accomplished two Double Sailfish releases on separate trips, plus eight Marlin releases and tons of Sails. This crew is as good as it gets and they keep getting better...kind of scary if you are a fish.

Although our number of trips has been down the last two weeks the lucky anglers fishing are going home happy.

I will be back in Costa for the start of the May bite and will be joined by fellow Jacksonville anglers Tommy Rady, John Ross, Corey Sapp, and possibly the infamous Greg Sage for some serious Marlin and Cuberra action. Stay tuned...this could be good!

This year has already been one of the best in recent memory and it should keep getting better. You don't want to miss out on the action. If you want to score big, hurry up and book as several dates are already locked up. Remember that last year it stayed good until late August and this year could be even better.

Feel free to call me with your questions or if you need any information.

Ship of Fools Tournament Recap - March 26/27, 2011

FishingNosara made a great splash at the Ship of Fools Tournament held in our home port of Garza, CR. This tournament focuses on Marlins and Sailfish and features some of the best captains in the area plus attracts big money fishing teams from around the world.

With bragging rights on the line, we decided to up the ante by enlisting Captain David and the Explorer which put us on the smallest boat in the field. The more conventional choice would have been Captain William and the 32' Wanderer, but the blue beauty was already booked by clients Kenny, Woods, Morgan, and George.

The Explorer roared out of Garza with authority on the morning of March 26 with fresh lines, new baits, and AC/DC's "Hells Bells" blasting from the newly-installed stereo system.

The awkward glances from the other boats turned into admiration as the 26' Super Panga lit up the scorecard with this Sailfish release, the first of the tournament.

By midday the boat reporting the most billfish releases was not one of the other tournament boats...it was the Wanderer!

Costa Rica Fishing

We took this shot from the Explorer while Alex, William, and the boys on the Wanderer were reeling in a Marlin fresh after releasing a Sailfish. We watched the fight for a while then got back to our own fishing. Great work by Morgan Tribble and his posse!

Fishing in Costa Rica

By the end of the first day, the Explorer was in the middle of the pack and the Wanderer would have been winning (if they had been entered in the tournament).

The second day was similar to the first. We had a nice Sailfish release early in the morning, then missed on a few nice fish. Craig, Matty, and Jack returned to shore at 1pm, but the afternoon charter on the Explorer caught a nice Roosterfish.

The Explorer finished in fourth place with 200 points. The Wanderer would have unofficially come in second with 825 points over the two days.

Most importantly was that all the boats and crews came to respect a 26' Super Panga capable of catching monster fish over 15 miles offshore. We have been saying that this boat has the capabilities of a 40+ foot craft since the beginning, and the Ship of Fools Tournament was our chance to prove it.

Captain David

Great work by Captain David and the whole FishingNosara family!

Captain Eduardo has kicked it into high gear this season. Between the legendary Nice n' Tight and the 31' Sportsman, Eduardo is delivering fantastic trips for his clients.

Captain Eduardo has been knocking 'em out the last few weeks, and April 18 was a day to remember for Terry on the Sportsman. They loaded up with a bunch of Black Tuna, three nice Yellowfin Tunas and two Amberjacks.

Billfish Capture Eduardo Carrillo

Then in the afternoon the Sailfish bite turned on in a major way. They raised five sails and buried the hooks into two of them. The releases were estimated at 80lbs. and 110lbs.

Fantastic fishing by the legendary Captain Eduardo Carrillo.

Captain Vibert along with First Mate Vibert Jr. have built a reputation on the Cabo as the most consistent boat in the bay.

Captain Vibert had a super trip on March 26 with client Brett Hartin on the Cabo. On a short 2.5 hour trip he caught 4 Ceda snappers and 2 Suegras.

The Master Captain certainly has the fish on the run this season and his consistent performances set the bar for the rest of the team.

Great job Vibert!

Explorer Fishng Boat

Captain David and the Super Panga Explorer embodies the ideal of big things coming in small packages. The 26 foot brawler packs the punch of boat twice her size and David has the heart of a Welterweight Champion at the console.

For the construction history and video of the maiden voyage of the Explorer, check out the Explorer Story.

On March 17, Captain Jack and Matty took some time off from dialing-in the new Safari Carts long enough to join Captain David for a quick 2 hour evening trip. In this short time Jack ripped in this 40lbs. Cuberra.

With dinner in the box, Matty ordered the appetizer in the form of a football-sized Yellowfin tuna. This was the first of 11 trips in 12 days for Matty and Jack (they were installing the stereo and working on the Explorer on the off day). Nice first trip to the fish market!

Tuna Costa Rica

Jack and Matty along with clients Jim and Bryan were out on the Explorer getting some fishing in on March 18. After boating a few small Yellowfins, Matty nailed this Cuberra Snapper late in the day on a 2.5 hour evening trip.

Captain David kept things moving for Matty and Jack on the Explorer with hot action all afternoon on March 19. They got several nice Yellowfins, a 20lbs. Rainbow Runner, and had a massive Cuberra straighten a 9/0 circle hook into a hat pin. This boat is constantly on top of the Yellows and David knows how to bring them home.

On March 23 we had a little idea: What better way to prepare for the Ship of Fools Tournament than a little intersquad scrimmage between the Wanderer and the Explorer?

On the Super Panga was Captain David, Craig, Matty, and Jack who had their sights set on Sailfish. After the daily round-up of stray tunas on the ride out, Captain David set the TLDs out in a classic Bait-and-switch high speed spread.

Around 10am the first bill started shopping the baits, first the short line, then the long outrigger, and finally settling on a bonefish rigged on the shotgun line. The line screamed off and Jack locked in for the battle.

In a shockingly efficent fight, Jack brought the Sailfish home in 8 minutes. Great work by Captain David to deliver Captain Jack's first-ever Pacific Sailfish.

Captain David on the Explorer is doing great things for all our clients big and small. Check out this great Cuberra Snapper these little dudes pulled in on a three hour sunset cruise on March 24.

Costa Rica fishing with kids

These sunset cruises are a fantastic way for youngsters to learn the craft of sportfishing without committing to a full day out on the ocean.

The Explorer was back on duty the morning of March 25 with client Luke and early half day. They got off to a quick start, catching a 20lbs. Dorado and a football-sized Yellowfin Tuna.

Around 11am the billfish woke up and began assaulting the Explorer's spread. In less than an hour they raised three Sailfish and released two. Excellent action no matter how you slice it!

For a victory lap, Luke and David visited the inshore reef for a quick casting session and once again put the hooks into an incredible fish... a 60lbs. Rooster Fish!

We are still waiting on that picture, but keep an eye out for it on the Daily Updates of the FishingNosara Blog!

After the Ship of Fools, we knew there would be no post tournament letdown for the Explorer. Captain David on the barroom brawler called the Explorer caught a white tuna, a 25lbs. Yellowfin tuna, and a 45lbs. Dorado. Excellent trip!

On April 1 Captain David took clients Michael and Sarah out on the Explorer for a 2.5 hour morning trip. They found hot action at a very famous reef just off of Garza called Picha Padre. On this very short trip they caught a nice white tuna and three useful black tunas.

We got some great news from the Explorer on April 4. The Super Panga with the supersized heart was booked by client Kieran Charles Fleming from Michigan for a full day of offshore billfish hunting. Captain David enlisted First Mate Alex from the Wanderer for the trip, and the boys did an excellent job of putting the clients on the fish of their dreams.

Sailfish Release Costa Rica

First up was a nice Sailfish release estimated over 100lbs. While that may satisfy most panga boats, the Explorer is not your daddy's panga...it is a billfish hunter to the bone!

Blue Marlin

Just ask this 300lbs. Blue Marlin that Captain David and Kieran released late in the day!

The moral of this story? The fish don't care how big the boat is. The right tackle, the right captain, and a good angler are all that is required to catch the fish of a lifetime on the 26' foot giant killer...Explorer!

On the night of Sunday April 18 the General Manager of Nosara Paradise Rentals Javier Hernandez took our two newest employees out for a sunset cruise on the Explorer. Our staff is a tight-knit group of friends and family, so anytime we bring new people into the fold it is a special occasion.

Kelvin and Artrero

Kelvin (left) has been brought on board as the chief technician for the Safari Carts. He also takes a central role in the repair and upkeep of all things mechanical and technical on the NPR campus.

Artrero (right) is a welcome addition to our office staff where he specializes in sales, client relations, and assists Manuel and Javier on the day-to-day operations. His brother is Nice n' Tight/Sportsman Captain Eduardo Carrillo.

Javier with Jack

Both of these gentlemen are doing great and we hope to have them with us for a long time.

As for the fishing, Captain David took them out to Pincha Padre and they caught some Black Tuna and a few Jacks. Nice work by the new guys and the end of an incredible month for FishingNosara's fastest rising star....Captain David Barrantes!

Captain William has the Wanderer rocking and rolling this season and the month of April was one for the record books. With First Mate Alex running the cockpit and the Captain William on the wheel, any fish that gets close to this boat does not stand a chance.

On March 15 Jim, Bryan, Katrina, and the rest of their posse were treated to a wide variety of smaller inshore fish.

Costa Rica Fishing

Later on, they buried the hook in Mr. Sailfish. He was no match for them this time...Another great catch and release for the Wanderer.

Nosara Sailfish

There was a great report on March 16 from the Wanderer of wonderful action on the inshore reefs. They brought in a nice Yellowfin Tuna, a Rainbow Runner, and the smallest Dorado imaginable (we threw that one back obviously).

Girl Fishing Woman Fishing Fishing Girl Costa Rica

There were three trips booked on the Wanderer on March 17 and all of the clients caught fish and had a great time. First up this little dude turned out to be a Yellowfin Tuna's worst nightmare:  Costa Rica Family Fishing Later in the afternoon the Yellowfin bite intensified and the catches kept getting bigger: Costa Rica Yellowfin Tuna Yellowfin Tuna Nosara Finally in the evening, the big red monster came calling and the boys on the Wanderer knew how to handle the beast. This is clearly one of the bigger Cuberra Snappers of the season so far. What a great day from Captain William and First Mate Alex! Nosara Fishing Snapper

Captain Jack and Matty had the Explorer on the hill getting its monthly upkeep on March 18 (and getting some slick new rod holders on the transom), so the Wanderer had to pick up the slack...and boy did they ever!

Wanderer Costa Rica One of our favorite clients Vanessa Mazandi and her friends on the Wanderer were ready to go toe-to-toe with some big fish. Captain William found an awesome Dorado bite around 2 pm and stayed on it until the box was stuffed with three nice greenies. Alex pulled some incredible gaff shots on these monsters. Costa Rica Dorado With the meat on ice the blue beauty tried to add a trophy fish to the trip to make it perfect. Around 5 pm the moon came up and right behind it was this massive Sailfish. Great work on the billshot and release. Costa Rica Sailfish Jump Sailfish Costa Rica With all the excitement surrounding the Explorer, the Safari Carts, the new shop, and all the other projects around here it is possible to forget that the big dog in this yard is the big blue billfish battlewagon....Wanderer!

March 20 was Matty and Jack's turn on the Wanderer, and a special day for Captain Jack. He was the main man on the  Wanderer Construction yet this day marked his first time back on the boat he built.

Satisfied with the boat's health after a year in the water, we stayed inshore in the morning to load up on more Yellowfin than we knew what to do with.
Yellowfin Tuna Costa Rica

At noon they were joined by Craig and William Kidd of North Carolina for some offshore trolling. Mr. Kidd reeled in this magnificant Dorado estimated to weigh 50 lbs. The strike came just before 5 pm...Long day, but well worth the wait.
Fighting Fish in Costa Rica

On March 22 Rick Solomon and his family were on the Wanderer and caught the fish of a lifetime. This beauty was good enough to land them a spot in the FishingNosara Hall of Fame. Check out this Blue Marlin!

Marlin Release Costa Rica Blue Marlin Costa Rica What a fighter! It is not often that First Mate Alex almost gets pulled in by a fish...good thing David had his back. Despite the strength of this fish, it was live released to battle another day. Marlin Costa Rica As the Ship of Fools Tournament neared, the scrimmage match with the Explorer came at a perfect time. Basically the Wanderer was not about to let the litte brother eat all the food.

After Jack's first sailfish catch on the Super Panga, Captain William came roaring up from behind and immediately put a nice Sailfish on the hook. A short fight and a quick release later and the score was nearly tied with the Explorer holding a slim lead in the form of a Bluefin tuna and a White tuna.

Sailfish

When Alex returned the teasers to the water he noticed that a curious Marlin had popped up about 50 yards behind the boat. He immediately pitched a rigged ballyhoo to the blue monster and set the hook.

So the Wanderer won the scrimmage, but the ability to share spots and tactics certainly helped FishingNosara find its way to the leaderboard come tournament time.

Captain Jack continued to put a dent in the Sailfish population on March 25 aboard the Wanderer. Around noon this massive beast screamed off about 300 yards of line in two seconds. Jack kept him taught while Captain William backed down to the bucking Sailfish.

Costa Rica Sailfish After a 7 minute fight, this fish was released.

On March 28, Eric Kelly and Brian Ware joined a proud tradition of Northeast Florida anglers who have bested massive Marlins on the Wanderer. It seems that the blue beauty can sense that her anglers are from her former port of call, and she delivers the goods when Jacksonville residents are on board. March 29 was one of those days where the billfish were popping all day long. Captain William kept a steady hand on the tiller while First Mate Alex ran the cockpit like a champion. By days end the boys had released three beautiful Sailfish.

With over a dozen releases in the previous ten days, the Wanderer was still rocking after a great week of billfishing. Keeping the hot streak alive, they released a pair of sailfish that were both over 100lbs. on March 30
Woman with Fish Sailfish Nosara As usual Captain William masterfully manipulated boat and fish to draw these fights to safe and quick ends. Client Frank Kelly couldn't of been more pleased with his trip and their two sailfish releases.

April 1 brought a great report from the Wanderer! Local businessman Allan Barrantes released two Sailfish and lost a MASSIVE Marlin. This was Sr. Barrantes first offshore fishing trip, and it was our great fortune to show him such a good time.

The Wanderer has built a reputation as the gold standard billfish hunter in the area, and client Mike Baker joined Captain William and First Mate Alex for a fantastic afternoon on the water on April 4. The midday billfish bite turned on in a big way with baits popping off left and right. Despite missing a handful of mystery nibbles, the boys still released 3 Sailfish and caught a nice 35lbs. Dorado for the dinner table. Most recently, Ran Davis booked the Wanderer on April 8 and had some really nice catches. Mr. Davis and his group came home with a 40lbs. Cuberra Snapper, four Yellowfin Tunas, and a tasty little white tuna. Friends on the Water

A few weeks back while pre-fishing for the Ship of Fools Tournament, I asked Captain David Barrantes of the Explorer if there were any other area captains who he didn't like.

See, in Florida we get really competitive with other boats, especially during tournament time.

David looked at me like I was crazy and laughed off the question. "Matt, we are all friends on the water."

Captian David Barrantes

Sure enough, these guys really look out for each other. From sharing the location of good fishing spots to giving away excess bait, the Ticos of Garza bay are family first, fishermen second.

It is no surprise then that when longtime FishingNosara mate Vibert Wingrove received his own boat, the Secret Spot, that Captain David joined him for an afternoon trip to help shake down the new craft.

David and Vibert shared the duties of rigging, gaffing, and angling like old friends. I imagine that seeing these two titans of Garza fishing back in the same boat scared the bejezzus out of the fish, and with good reason.

By the end of the trip they had caught several nice Yellowfin tunas and this beautiful Roosterfish.

Garage Update

Construction has begun on our new garage in Guiones Beach. Located directly behind our office, this facility enables us to work on our Safari carts, trucks, boats, bikes, toaster ovens, blenders, and everything else around here that breaks down occasionally.

Man, these guys work fast and hard with limited tools.

When was the last time you poured a slab with a wheelbarrow and two shovels? These fellas got it done in a few long days. Excellent work as always by Javier, Grieven, Kelvin, and the rest of the building team.

After pouring the foundation and stem walls, we are currently out of the ground. In this picture you can see the detail bay being constructed on the far corner. Soon we will be moving up to the roof.

Great work by the building crew!

On the way back from Garza, we spotted the Cadillac kicking up dust with some happy clients getting their kicks. The Safari Carts are already a huge success so if you want these cool wheels for yourself, remember to book ahead of time.
