HB1437 -

Some  Concerns

The previous issue of Water Matters described House Bill 1437, a bill passed by the Texas legislature in 1999 which allowed the Lower Colorado River Authority to sell up to 25,000 acre-feet of water in Williamson County, even though Williamson County was located outside the LCRA's statutory water service area.

The unique feature of HB1437 is that it requires that water sales outside the Colorado basin be matched, gallon for gallon, by water returned to the Colorado basin. The law states that there must be "no net loss" of water from the Colorado basin as a result of water sales to Williamson County.
