A recent article in this newsletter (Vol. 18-6) discussed the proposition that extensive brush clearing could appreciably increase the amount of soil moisture making its way into creeks and rivers. This is a complex proposition that is often presumed to be universally true but may apply only in certain cases.
The conventional wisdom is that the Juniper, one of the dominant woodland plants in Central Texas, is a non-native plant which is responsible for seemingly unlimited consumption of soil moisture. This notion is being demonstrated by well thought-out field research, repeatedly and more convincingly each year, to be largely myth, possibly originating in ranching culture.

CTWC to meet at

The Central Texas Water Coalition (CTWC) will meet at 6 pm next Thursday, January 12 at Carlos 'n Charlies restaurant, 5973 Hiline Rd., off Hudson Bend Road.
The guest speaker will be John Nielsen-Gammon, Texas State Climatologist. His subject will be, "The Future of the Texas Drought."
