Question #1: "Put Treated Wastewater In the Lakes?"

Last month, a survey was distributed to all Water Matters newsletter subscribers asking for their response to four questions concerning current lake issues. The responses to the first question are described in this article. The other questions will be discussed in future issues of this newsletter.

Question #1 was, "State rules now prohibit utilities from discharging treated wastewater into the Highland Lakes. Please indicate the degree to which you believe the following statements apply to this matter."

A total of 185 persons completed the questionnaire. There were 28 cities or localities represented in the group, with the cities of Austin and Lakeway together accounting for more than half of the total. The following chart shows how the responses were distributed geographically.

These answers showed strong, but opposite opinions about the effect on water recreation of discharging wastewater into the lakes.. Fifty-five of the 185 who answered thought discharging would have "very much" effect. The second most popular answer (47/185) was "not at all."
