Water planning in Texas The most recent version of the Texas State Water Plan was published in 2007. The state water plan is a compilation of sixteen regional plans submitted by the volunteer water planning group in each region. Planning group members each represent one of eleven interests, including cities, counties, agriculture, industry, and the environment. This latest update of the State Water Plan compares water demand in cities and counties throughout the state with water availability in each area, projected fifty years ahead. More information about regional water planning may be found on the web site of the Lower Colorado Regional Water Planning Group, <www.regionk.org> which does the water planning for the fourteen counties of the lower Colorado River basin at. The 2007 State Water Plan identifies future water shortages in dozens of cities and rural areas of Texas during the next fifty years. Several of the large cities, including Dallas and San Antonio, are in need of new water supplies as their population continues to grow. New dams and pipelines, new water treatment plants and well fields are expensive and in some cases require decades of advance planning to become operational. The following exhibit shows several of the major water projects included in the 2007 State Water Plan.
