Water Matters as email

Water Matters is the newsletter of the Highland Lakes Group. It was first published in September, 1993, to inform Highland Lakes residents and businesses of San Antonio's plans to make the Highland Lakes part of the San Antonio Water System.  The most recent printed edition of Water Matters was in February, 2008, and that will be the last one that is printed and mailed. This is the first edition of the new email version of Water Matters.

It will take some practice on the part of both readers and editors to make the transition smoothly. For example, the printed edition of Water Matters often contained articles of two or three printed pages. Long articles will not work well in the new email format, so when we have an article that is longer than one page, it will be continued on the Highland Lakes Group web site. There will be a few sentences in the email about the subject of the article. If the subject is of interest to you, you may find the balance of the article by clicking on the link provided in the email. To return to the email newsletter, simply click on the red X icon in the upper right corner of the screen, and you will be back in the email newsletter.

Making the transition from print-and-mail to email cost us a significant number of our readers, since we did not have an email address for everyone we mailed to. You can help with this problem by forwarding this email to one or two of your friends that you think would be interested in keeping up with lake issues. If you are not interested yourself, you can unsubscribe by clicking on the "unsubscribe" block at the end of this newsletter.

LakePAC Fun-Raiser 2008 a success

Beau Theriot greets crowd at LakePAC Fun-RaiserLakePAC is a political action committee dedicated to protecting the interests of the people who live and work around the Highland Lakes. LakePAC raises money through fund raising events such as the one held at The Oasis on March 4th. The money is donated to the campaign funds of those members of the Texas legislature who are in a position to help the Highland Lakes.

Beau Theriot, owner of The Oasis, reminisced about the beginning of The Oasis (see photo). Theriot was a major sponsor of the event, donating both the use of the beautiful Top of the Oasis Room and the food.

Other photographs of the Fun-Raiser, as well as a list of the sponsors, may be seen on the Highland Lakes Group web site by clicking on the following link to the site  - LakePAC  . Clicking on the red X in the upper right corner of the web site will return you to this newsletter.

Water Article:

"The good news is that Texas has an incredibly detailed plan for how to deal with the looming shortfalls in every one of its major urban areas. The bad news is that you can't drink a plan."

Texas Monthly magazine had an article in its February, 2008, issue about water supplies in Texas titled, "The Last Drop" by S.C. Gwynne. If you have ever wondered why they stopped building new dams several decades ago, this article will shed some light.

If you can't find a copy, try going to the Texas Monthly web site TX Monthly . Click on "Magazine", then "Archives", then  "2008, then "February." There you will have several choices, including (1) reading the article online (4 pages), (2) printing the article, and (3) buying either the issue itself or a copy of the article, which will be mailed to you.
