| Field Status and Guidelines |
 |
Please be respectful of the other WSC teams and adhere to the field schedule. Our fields are quite crammed this spring and we all need to work together and cooperate with other teams.
Understand that the High School teams have priority on the fields. Please stay off of the field if a High School team is using it.
A reminder that if fields are closed by the Town, all WSC teams are to stay off of the fields.
If the weather is threatening, call the WSC Field Status Hotline before heading out to a home game or practice.
Hotline: 1-781-440-6501
The Winchester Recreation Department website is under construction and doesn't currently report the field status. In the meantime, the field status is available on
www.winchestersoccer.net
It is essential that all teams comply with the field closures, so check the hotline or the website!
One day of play on a wet field can destroy the field for the entire season!
Please respect our fields, clean up after your team. Thanks in advance for your cooperation! |
| Sandlot Coaches Kick-off Meeting |
 |
The Sandlot Coaches Kick-off meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29th at 6:00-7 :30PM in the Lynch Gym.
We are asking U6 coaches to arrive at 6 and all other coaches to come at 6:30. Arthur Dimitrakopoulos will hold a brief session Mentoring demonstration for the newer coaches and then we will have all coaches there for the rest of the meeting. We will also distribute needed equipment (game balls, pinnies, cones).
We will also have some guest speakers with valuable tips to make your season successful.
Mark your calendars and don't miss this event. |
| Volunteers Wanted!
We encourage and invite you to get involved in the WSC. There is plenty of work to get ready for the Spring soccer season.
Saturday work parties are a great way to see some friends, make new friends, have a cup of coffee and to witness, first hand, the magic that happens to get our 1,600 kids on the field each season.
Join us at 7:00 AM at the downtown Dunkin Donuts on Saturday April 5th. We split up into groups to handle all of the fields and are usually done by 8:30 AM.
Are you a Webmaster?
The WSC is looking for volunteers to help update and maintain our website as well as to evaluate new technology platforms for the future. Please let us know if you can help the club in this important area!
Contact us to help out! |
| Zero Tolerance!
|
|
Just a reminder that Winchester Soccer Club adheres to the Mass Youth Soccer and BAYS Travel League Zero Tolerance Policy towards game referees.
All coaches and all spectators shall support the referee. Failure to do so will undermine the referee's authority and has the potential of creating a hostile environment for the players, the referee, and all the other participants and spectators.
The WSC asks all coaches and spectators to review the Zero Tolerance Policy and to support our young referees by complying with this policy. |
| Thanks Barry! |
 |
Barry Scheer, who has been involved with the WSC for over twenty years, retired from the WSC Board in March. He will continue to be an active club member and plans to continue to coach both Sachems FC and WSC teams.
"I have had a great run on the board and I have established great friendships and working relationships with people I have come to know, trust and admire. We have accomplished some great things for our players and the town along the way," said Barry.
"Barry Scheer was a very sensible, selfless, and consistent contributor to the board. He was a model volunteer. He was a guiding light and will be greatly missed." said Chris Scanlon, WSC Coaching Director.
We are planning a party to celebrate Barry's vast contributions to our Club. Stay tuned for details!
THANKS Coach Scheer! | |

Fields! Fields! Fields! |
Field space is always scarce in Winchester but this spring season is the tightest season in the club's history. With the introduction of new programs and the continued growth of existing programs, the demand for Winchester field space has exploded in recent years. Our registrations continue to climb, this season over 1,600 players have registered for WSC programs.
The initial Spring 2008 Field schedule represented a 15% reduction in our field space and did not allocate enough field space for us to run our programs. This initial allocation would have forced us to make widespread cuts affecting hundreds of our members.
The WSC Board and the Fields Committee worked to restore the fields that we need to run our programs this spring season. We thank the Town Manager, Board of Selectman and the Recreation Department for their support and their efforts in this process.
We were able to restore most of the game field space that we need, though our allocations were still reduced by 10%. Some teams will be limited to one practice a week. Many teams will not receive the field space that they wish and we will squeeze more teams on to the fields this spring. We ask your patience this season.
Field space to reschedule and make up games is severely limited this season. We encourage all teams to 'play the schedule' to avoid makeup games.
The WSC is committed to work with the Town and the other community-based, youth sports organizations to streamline the process in the future. We ask for your support with this effort. If you would like to get involved, please contact Kip Garlow, WSC Fields Committee Chair at kgarlow@comcast.net

Message to WSC Coaches from the Sportsmanship Chair |
Dear 2008 Spring Soccer Coaches:
You are the great ones for leading our children through the ups and downs, fun and development in the game of soccer and more importantly life.
Like it or not you are role models - and as you think about your season think about the things you can control to make your season a guaranteed success. You cannot really control the weird scores that hit the top of the cross bar, bang off your goalie's head and go in, the questionable referee calls, the sick player, the bad directions, etc. You can control the way you and your team represent our town, our club and yourselves.
Good sportsmanship is a guaranteed ingredient of not only a successful season but parents that appreciate their child's emotional development. A good attitude builds winners!

Ombudsman Committee |
The WSC Ombudsman Committee, also known as the "OC", led by JD Hale, recently published its Mission Statement:
The "OC" is a committee of Winchester Soccer Club members or non-members whose primary purpose is to interact with the membership, summarize needs, issues, and opportunities for the board to consider and possibly act upon. It also is meant to allow for feedback on new programs and initiatives that the club is trying to allow for quicker feedback and opportunity for refinement.
The "OC" is a smaller, more accessible and casual group to allow the membership to more easily feel their concerns and ideas are heard comfortably.
The "OC" is staffed by club members Joanne Baldini, Doug Darby, JD Hale (Chair), Jan Koss and Tom Schneider. Please click here for our complete contact information. Our next meeting is April 9th.

Club Bylaws Revamped |
The WSC Board of Directors, in a Special Meeting convened for the purpose, unanimously approved an amended set of Bylaws on March 20, 2008.
The amended Bylaws, adopted at the Board Meeting on April 2, 2008 are the product of several months of careful and thoughtful review from an excellent legal team drawn from our community. Richard Bardi, Esq.; Gary Grassey, Esq.; Jacqueline Welch,Esq.; Joop Grevelink and Charlie Stackhouse formed the core of the Bylaws Committee. The Bylaws Committee carefully weighed and considered all advice and suggestions put forward by Club, Winchester community and WSC Board members during this elaborate process. In step with a changing legal landscape, the new Club Bylaws incorporate new best practices.
This overhaul of our Club Bylaws represents a major step forward for our Cluband we appreciate the tremendous effort expended by the Bylaws Committee to bring our Bylaws up-to-date with the realities of our growing Club. Click here for the amended bylaws.

Girls U9 Blast-off Event |
WSC hosted a special event on Saturday March 22 to prepare all U9 girls for their first travel season. In addition to meeting their coaches and receiving their travel uniforms, the girls and their parents received an orientation into the world of BAYS travel soccer.
The Blast-off event featured guest speaker, Tracey Leone. Leone, a Winchester resident, is currently the Assistant Coach of the Harvard Women's Soccer team. Tracey has a distinguished career in US Women's Soccer as both a player and a coach. She is the first American to win a World Championship as both a player and a head coach. The girls were thrilled to hear Tracey speak about US Women's soccer and we hope to foster strong ties between her and the WSC.
