| BAYS Travel Coaches Meeting |
 |
|
The BAYS Travel Coaches Kick-off meeting is scheduled for Friday, March 28th at 7 PM in the McCall Cafeteria.
A representative from each BAYS team must attend this meeting to pick up the BAYS league rosters, which are required for each game and needed equipment (game balls, pinnies, cones). We will also be distributing the checks to pay referees for each of the league matches.
We will also have some guest speakers with valuable tips to make your season successful.
Mark your calendars! Don't miss this event!

| Volunteers Wanted!
We encourage and invite you to get involved in the WSC. There is plenty of work to get ready for the Spring soccer season.
Saturday work parties are a great way to see some friends, make new friends, have a cup of coffee and to witness, first hand, the magic that happens to get our 1,600 kids on the field each season.
Join us at 7:00 AM at the downtown Dunkin Donuts on Saturday March 29th and April 5th. We split up into groups to handle all of the fields and are usually done by 8:30 AM.
Have a Kindergartner?
We are also looking for Age Group Coordinators for the BU6 (Kindergarten) age group. Please consider volunteering for this important position.
Are you a Webmaster?
The WSC is looking for volunteers to help update and maintain our website as well as to evaluate new technology platforms for the future. Please let us know if you can help the club in this important area!
Contact us to help out! |
| Referees Wanted!
|
|
|
Do you want to become a referee? If you are at least 11 years old, you can take a certification course and become a referee for the Spring season. New referees start out handling Sandlot and 6v6 games, and as sideline referees for larger games.
It isn't too late to sign up! Click here for the upcoming Referee Course schedule.
If you are interested in becoming a referee or have any questions, contact Michael Creane at 781-729-6306 or email at michaelcreane@comcast.net

| Field Status |
|
Just a reminder that the playing fields are closed for the Winter. The town will likely open the fields at the beginning of April. However, until the fields are officially opened by the town, it is essential that all WSC teams stay off of the fields.
One day of play on a wet field can destroy the field for the entire season!
Thanks in advance for your cooperation! | |

Spring BAYS Travel Season |
The Spring BAYS Travel season opens on Saturday, April 12. The season runs for 10 weeks, including Memorial Day weekend, and ends on June 14.
The BAYS League is still working on the game schedule, however, the preliminary team placements are available here. We expect that the game schedule will be published within the next two weeks.
Once we receive our field permits from the Town of Winchester, we can prepare the practice schedule. Our field space will be quite tight this spring season and we will do our best to get practice time for all of our teams.
We aim to publish the practice schedule by the end of March and coaches will contact all players with the schedule. Team practices will begin once the fields are open; typically the first week of April. Stay tuned!

Girls U9 Blast-off Event |
WSC is hosting a special event in Saturday March 22 at 4-6 PM in the Lincoln Auditorium to prepare all U9 girls for their first travel season. In addition to meeting their coaches and receiving their travel uniforms, the girls and their parents will receive an orientation into the world of BAYS travel soccer.
Coach Scanlon will also inform parents and players of the variety of playing opportunities, including club soccer, that are offered for girls from U9 through to High School.
Last, but by no means least, the Blast-off event will introduce guest speaker, Tracey Leone to the Winchester Soccer Club. Leone, a Winchester resident, is currently the Assistant Coach of the Harvard Women's Soccer team. Tracey has a distinguished career in US Women's Soccer as both a player and a coach. She is the first American to win a World Championship as both a player and a head coach. We are thrilled that Tracey will speak to our young players about US Women's soccer and we hope to foster strong ties between her and the WSC.
A special thanks to John Jenke and Dave Sauer for conceiving of and coordinating this unique event. We plan to expand this concept to include the boys in future seasons and we wish all U9s good luck for their first travel season!

Difference between Sandlot and Sachems FC Academy |
Soccer is a team sport, and the WSC strongly encourages all players to participate in the Sandlot (In-town) program where they will learn valuable teamwork skills, and get the game time to fully develop as a player. For those children who aspire to play soccer at a premier level, Sachems FC Academy provides an additional opportunity to play in a challenging and fun environment to improve their skills.
Sandlot (In-town) is fun, small-sided, team-oriented soccer for younger players attending K-3rd grade (Fall U6-U9, Spring U6-U8). All of players who register for Sandlot are placed on a team, which meets each Saturday during the season. The sessions start with a warm up and practice followed by games with other Sandlot teams. The teams train as a unit and are coached by volunteer coaches. Professional coaches, acting as Coach Mentors, are available at each session to assist the volunteer coaches with the session.
Sachems FC Academy, a premier soccer development program for 1st through 4th Grade girls and boys (U7-U10), offers advanced soccer training for players who show interest in playing soccer at a premier level. The Academy program is skills-oriented and is designed to complement rather than replace the players' town soccer programs.
Sachems FC Academy, which meets twice a week (Tuesday and Sunday) is run by a professional coaching staff who design age appropriate activities which are presented in a progressively challenging but fun environment. Players focus on developing soccer skills, understanding functional aspects of the game while increasing their speed and ball control. Academy includes players from many surrounding towns and players are not assigned to a particular team and rotate through different groups during the season.
WSC strongly encourages Academy participants to also enroll in their town soccer program.

Recommended Memorial Day Tournaments |
|
Danvers Invitational Tournament: May 24th - 26th. This is a great tournament for all boys and girls teams, U8-U16 age brackets and various levels of play. This tournament began in 1991. Each team will play 3 or 4 games dependent upon age brackets. Any team and level is welcomed to attend this tournament. The final deadline for registration is April 1st.
Needham Invitational Memorial Day Tournament: May 23rd - 26th. This tournament has two divisions, Division 1 for Town and Developmental Club teams and Division 2 for Town teams only. Recommended teams are division 3 and above for attendance of this tournament.
If you have any questions regarding tournament play at the individual or team level, feel free to contact the Tournament Coordinator, Robin Riccio at robin_riccio@comcast.net. She will provide guidance through the registration process.
Players Rostered on both Maple and Travel Teams:
Did you ever find yourself wondering what your player's priorities are when you have a player who is plays on more than one team? Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association has established player priority by-laws that are respected and adhered to by all of the Massachusetts Leagues.
In general terms, a player's priorities on a major national holiday weekend are as follows:
Memorial Day - priority to Premier (MAPLE) Teams
Columbus Day - priority to Town Teams

WSC Committees |
The Winchester Soccer Club has formed three new committees to assist in improving communications with our membership, improve the field scheduling process, and provide a mechanism to address concerns of members.
The Ombudsman Committee, led by JD Hale, will be reaching out and receiving feedback from the WSC members about concerns and opportunities for the club to consider. The committee will sort through the information, connect common threads of information and decide what to present to the WSC Board for club-wide consideration or action.
Robin Riccio is heading up the Communications Committee, which has two primary goals. In the short term, the group has implemented a contact management system and launched "Winchester Soccer Club News" to bring the latest news and important updates to its members. Longer term, the committee looks to improve our technology and website to provide a more efficient and user-friendly system. The communications group is currently looking for a Webmaster to assist the group in both its goals. Anyone interested can contact Robin at robin_riccio@comcast.net.
Finally, a Fields Committee, led by Kip Garlow, was established to help the club in its efforts to secure the necessary field space required to support our growing membership. The committee has also been working to establish a more consistent practice schedule and practice locations for each age group and program.
